Al Kent? The Detroit singer? No way, I'm ok in the shower, but certainly not a recording studio.

So what about these edits?
I'll PM you.

Hustle: you can find "Hi Jack" on the "Atlantic Dance Classics" CD by Warner Bros. It's a pretty nice CD, if a bit too-big-time-spanning, from 1972 to the mid 80's. The songs are complete versions. Orange cover with some cool dance shoes.
Of course, maybe you're talking of the vinyl version...

Thanks to all for the info! Giovanni - so Patti Jo really exists... that would be some find! :P And I am really curious about the Swearin' To God 10" you mentioned.... there were two different US 12"ers pressed - a commercial pressing from 1976 with 'Boomerang' on the flip side, and a WLP ("for disco dj's only!!!) from '75 that runs 10:32. The 12" white label version is longer than the commercial 12" or lp - do you know if the 10" have the same 10:32 version and does it have a similar 'disco dj' white label?

MPS - unfortunately never heard of any of the songs on your list on US 12"... I can tell you there were 2 different pressings of the Gibson Brothers, a promo (PRO-A-723) and a commercial pressing (DISD 8892), but both have 'Better Do It Salsa' on the flip. No instrumental. Also, I have never seen a US pressing of the Walter Gibbons remix of "It's a Better Than Good Time".

Leatherman - didn't realize that the UK 12" of "Movin'"/"Changin'" was from 1980. Thanks for the info! There was an original promo 12" of "Movin'" pressed back in 1976 in France on Pathe Marconi... with that leopard-style label. The flip side is the Mel Cheren remix of "Nice & Slow" by Jesse Green. Another interesting pairing on Pathe Marconi is "Love Hangover" 7:49 by Ms. Ross backed with "I'm Gonna Let My Heart Do The Walking" 3:33 by The Supremes. I don't think the Supremes was pressed on 12" anywhere else...

Jussik - there was a promo-only US Ariola 12" of Pretty Maid, but I bet it is the same as the 7" - it runs 3:48.

A few of the hard to find records I searched for for many years and finally found include:

Barry White's Greatest Hits - white label special DJ disco mix

Love Unlimited Orchestra: My Sweet Summer Suite - both the white label and blue label TCD-59 pressings. Both versions are 7+ minutes, but there is a slightly different edit before the first sustained piano note on the blue label pressing. I wonder if this blue label pressing was supposed to be a commercially issued that was cancelled. It doesn't have any indication that it is a promo... Both of these were hard to find!!!!

War: Low Rider - the first United Artists 12" promo from 1975

KC & Sunshine Band: I'm Your Boogie Man - TK 12" promo

The Fatback Band: Spanish Hustle - Polydor/Event 12" promo

Claudja Barry: Sweet Dynamite - US Salsoul 12" promo with Tom Moulton remix

A couple of other oddities I have come across include a Japanese 12" pressing on Salsoul of the Salsoul Orchestra. It is a 4 track 45 rpm pressing of "Tangerine" / "Chicago Bus Stop" backed with "Salsoul 3001" / "Nice 'n' Naasty". I think this was pressed sometime in '77 or '78. I'm not aware of the first 2 tracks being available on any other 12" pressing. Also found a Japanese 12" promo of Michael Jackson's "Rock With You" on Epic and it is an extended 4:57 version not found on the US promo or UK commercial 12"ers. (it is a simple splice edit, repeating the first verse a second time...)

And some 12"ers I am STILL looking for include:

Banzaii: Chinese Kung Fu - Scepter 12" test pressing
Henry Mancini: African Symphony - RCA 12" promo
David Ruffin: Walk Away From Love - Motown 12" promo

Oh yeah... and Patti Jo!!!! Guess half the fun is the hunt!

Thanks for taking your time! And you have made some nice finds yourself :)

The japanese Salsoul Orchestra 12" sure would be nice to have, especially with "Chicago Bus Stop", which I've never heard of on 12" before!

The 10" was pressed in very few copies before releasing the 12". It is a double sided WLP with the same song on both sides, and the version is the 10:32.

You know, I THOUGHT I had read in Tom Moulton's Billboard column in the late '70's that this came out on a 10"... but after I learned that the 12" white label pressing existed, I figured that it must have been a memory lapse (either Tom's or mine). That has to be a real rarity!!!!

I have seen a couple of test pressings on eBay that are also pretty rare. These seem to be legitimate original label test pressings, not more recent 'whack' bootlegs:

"Disco Queen" - Hot Chocolate / "Tornado" - Original Cast of 'The Wiz' (Atlantic 12" test pressing)
"I Can Understand It" / (one-sided) - Kokomo (Columbia 12" test pressing)

I would think that the Atlantic 12" was pressed before they officially established their 12" promo series since both of these songs were on 7" promo DSKO pressings. The guy who bought it told me that both mixes were different from the 7" versions and that "Tornado" was quite a bit longer! (By the way, he also mentioned that there was 2 different pressings of the "Tornado" 7" DSKO 52 pressing with different mixes... anyone here know anything about that?)

The Kokomo song was released in 1975, so this might be another early experiment by a label testing out the qualities of the 12" format. It might have been a remixed version... the running time was listed as 8:56, which I believe was longer than the lp version.

Default most difficult to find record...hmm

How about a 12" copy of More More More by Andrea True Connection. Saw a VG copy listed on ebay that topped $105.00 and the reserve was still not met. Or a 12" copy of Love Dancin by Marlena Shaw on original label. How about a 12" copy of Bourgie Bourgie by Ashford & Simpson.

Why the hell don't they start repressing some of this stuff??

in the groove banzaii was also released in england as the b.side of breakaway-ernie bush-disco mix so its like scepter/tom moulton heaven ! on contempo records cx 12 its odd looking as the label is tiny like a 7" all contempo 12" are hard to find due to low press runs [round 1500] and this is probibly the hardest on the label

More, More, More has been reissued plenty of times, but that doesn't change the fact that the original promo is sought after by many. Don't know about the others.

Thanks for the info - so there's a promo to hunt. The US Ariola 7" that I treasure clocks a bit less so the promo is longer. I do have now this 3:48 version on a continuosly - and badly - mixed compliation album, in this the sax goes on a bit longer not fading away.

CHERCHEZ LA FEMME is on one of those French Pathι Marconi leopard skin motif 12"-ers that seem to contain the most surprising things. I found a Charo track on one that I've never seen anywhere else, called "La Salsa". This is not salsa music at all but a full blown orchestral 75/76-style disco track, sounding like a Montana production with backups by The Sweethearts. The label does not list any producers.

I've only seen UK 12-inches from this one, and they usually go for around $100. But is there a US 12" also?

PS. Nice name! I'm also stuck in 1979. And 1978. And 1977. And...

I have a dealer friend in Boston who swears there was in fact a U.S. 12" copy of Bourgie Bourgie by Ashford & Simpson. So, the question is, would a UK pressing look very similar to a U.S. pressing?...i.e. same label, but perhaps only a very tiny label indicating, "Made in UK"? Perhaps, confusing someone that wasn't very meticulously aware of a UK pressing to begin with? I don't know?....maybe we will never know, unless someone reading this has a U.S. copy of Bourgie Bourgie by Ashford & Simpson...

"Bourgie Bourgie" exists only as UK press (B Side of "Love don't make it right")

I'm pretty positive Bourgie was never on US 12". Though the song is from 77 the UK 12" is from 80 and was issued as an oldie on the flip of Love don't always make it right (after Gladys had a minor hit with her vocal version). So the WB US label from 77 and the UK one from 80 would be obviously different. I know quite a few people who would sware it didn't exist.

Something to be aware of. Quite a few of the UK 12"'s have a mastering fault in which the track speeds up really fast for about 30 seconds in the second half of the song. It is impossible to tell by looking at the record if it is a good pressing or not.

At this link discodj.com
a guy says that the El Bimbo 12" exists...the number issue should be 12406 which normally in the Scepter discographies i've found on the web is catalogued as "unknown"!!
Where's the truth?
