Ladyboy, my friend has the "Night People" 12". It is an ABC promo (only?) remix by a guy called Roy Thode. He really strips it down and adds some percussion it the breaks. It's much longer than the LP version, the last 2 minutes are just drums and spacey noises. Have you been after it since the 70's?

I'm not sure about "Hooked On You", it has slightly cheesy chord changes in parts. The Funky Nasseu is by Raymond Munnings, by the way.

There is another King Sunny Ade 12" on Island from the early 80's called "Abdonga Party", which has a really good dubby mix on the B side. It was mixed by some one quite well known, like FK (though it might not be him for sure). I haven't got it myself (though I'm lookin hard).

Oops! Yes, I know it's Ray, it was a misprint!

Right, I *really* need that Lee Dorsey now. I'd always assumed it was the same as the LP version (which is about 20 secs longer than the 7-inch), but now I know it's actually different it's gonna make me even crazier. It came out on a French comp. put together by Erik Rug a while ago, but I don't know whether it's the 12-inch version or not.

As for Cerrone. Mmm, I'm surprised you don't like it. On the whole I don't like much he did, I find most of it too hi-NRG and cheesy for my tastes, but I think this tune's exceptional and it still really works in clubs that I play at.

I love all that early 80s Island stuff, very dubby and weird. It sounds very current. If you're into that sound you should also look out for all the Island 7-inches from that period because most of them have dub mixes on the B-side, I've got several of them, from Grace Jones to John Martyn.

This is indeed interesting. I'd heard since 1986 that there was a Dorsey 12, only that it was mixed by (I think) Jim Steward. This didn't make sense as I'm sure Steward had already passed by Dorsey time ('78?). Certainly seems more feasible now. I want this record to sit next to the Dynamic Corvettes 12" I've always been waiting for.

Sadly, Jimmy Stuard (note spelling!) died in the Everard Baths fire in May 1977, and Lee Dorsey's 'Night People' came out in 1978, so it's doubtful that he mixed it. Roy Thode certainly sounds a possibility. Any more on Mr. Dorsey?

Ladyboygrimsby,
My point was that Mr. Stuard had missed the bus carrying Mr. Dorsey. But nice of you to confirm!

I think you might be talking about an earlier Dorsy 12" from 76 Forrrce. I know there is supposed to be two 12"'s by him which are both super rare. One is "Night People", the other is called "Time" and that could maybe be the one mixed by Stuard. I've never seen a copy personally, but I know someone from Canada who has a copy, I trust his taste and he says it is pretty good in a funky, stripped down way. It's apparantly a version of a Jackie Moore song.

Well, the plot thickens. I don't know if you know 'Time' but it's an awesome tune, which came out in about 73 on Atlantic. BUT... There was a Tom Moulton remix project, which came out under the name Disco Trek and there's a Tom Moulton mix on that of 'Time', which is longer (it's about 4 1/2 mins.). It's a beautiful song.

Hey - I've heard about that Tom Moulton mix of Time. Is it really true then? Has anyone sen a copy? I'd love to get my hands on that baby.
Incidentally, Lee Dorsey also released a 12" of Working in a coalmine around 76. Obviously it was an updated version, not sure who did the mix though I heard it was Walter Gibbons, and it certainly sounds like it could be. It's 14 mins long and about ten of those are nothing but handclaps, whistles and synths.

I've seen the Disco Trek Lp before but I've never picked one up. If it is the one I'm thinking of it has Blue Magic "Look Me Up" on it. Is there is a Jackie Moore song on there called "Time"? Then I would assume that must be the song that Dorsey covers on his 76 Stuard mixed 12" - though I've heard neither, so I can't be 100%.

Another rare 12" I'm after is the promo only remix of Lenny Williams "Runnin". It starts off for about 4 mins of just congas and vocals (using different ad libs than on the normal LP/12" version). It doesn't credit the mixer, but it sounds almost Gibbons-ish with its all over the place edits - like something off his Disco Madness sessions.

I have it. It's excellent. There are also Moulton mixes of Sons of Robin Stone, Sister Sledge and others on the album.

Another Lee Dorsey 12-inch? What's going on, Lee!

I've got that Lenny Williams. Someone told me there were only 25 pressed? It's handwritten on the label and says "Mixed with love by Walter". I guess that could be Gibbons? As much as I love the first 4 minutes, it's the 3 minutes at the end I really love, when it drops down to just a cowbell and synths.

Really? As in 'You've Got Me running'? Any chance of a CD-R of it? I'll exchange it for a bunch of re-edits...

Wow Rufus, you have that Williams promo. That is the stuff of legends bro - any chance of a CD?. I've not heard the Workin in a coalmine Dorsey 12", but again it sounds interesting.

While we are on those legendary 12"'s. Does anyone have the Charanga 76 version of "Could Heaven be Like This?" It is apparantly from a year or so before the Good Times/Ain't No Stoppin LP/12"'s.

The other one everyone I know who know's of it wants, is the Canadian Black Sun 12" of "We Rap More Mellow" with the instrumental and accapella. It is supposed to be from about 84.
