Discussion on The most difficult disco record to find? within the Disco Music of the 70s and 80s forums, part of the General Music Discussions at DiscoMusic.com category; I've ordered heaps of records through GEMM. Only had one example where the record was in really lousy shape. ...

This is a whole other topic. Please see the "Vinyl Record Care, Audio Restoration, MP3 & Computers" category in this forum. We've covered cleaning of vinyl records and have lots of suggestions for you.

| I came across some rather interesting information while surfing the net for info on Bionic Boogie.Eric Carr the late drummer for Kiss was formerly the drummer for a disco band known as Mother Nature/Father Time in the New Jersey area.He played under his given name as Paul Caravello.Mother Nature/Father Time was the band that performed as Bionic Boogie since Gregg Diamond's Bionic Boogie were studio musicians and he needed someone to perform and promote Bionic Boogie on the road. Here is where it gets interesting in late 1979 Mother Nature/Father Time recorded an album for Casablanca Records under the name of Lightning and released it as a promo Lp with a 12" promo also however the release was minimal as the band broke up after recording it and Casablanca did not have anyone to promote the recording in a live venue. Quote " In the summer of 1979 Mother Nature/Father Time recorded an album for the Casablanca Record label (Casablanca NBLP-7170), under the stage name, Lightning. This, contrary to popular belief, was not attributed to "Bionic Boogie". No mention of that name was made anywhere on the packaging on the album, nor was the album called "Disco Symphony" or "Lightning Disco Symphony", it was simply called "Lightning: Lightning". Promotional copies were released around October/November 1979, and a very limited number of regular release versions came out soon around the same time. Additionally, a promotional 12" single featuring the tracks "Disco Symphony" and "Baby, Without Your Love" (NBD-20205DJ) was released around this time as well. Circulation of this album is still very unclear and very small, with Eric stating in interviews, "that only 5 or 6" copies existed.... Copies of this promotional album were pressed by both Casablanca and PolyGram (On a personal note, I know of 17 copies in circulation outside of the band/family members and have owned 10 copies myself! A box of 20 seeled copies was located in a New York warehouse in early 2000)." There are pictures and additional information on this Lp at the Eric Carr Memorial tribute website http://www.ericcarr.com/tribute/discography/ Could this be "The most difficult disco record to find"[/img]

I found the 12" locally (same as LP versions). A forum member loaned me the LP so I could do a needle drop. A few others have it as well. It's not easy to find cheap, mind you, but that has more to do with rabid KISS fanatics snapping them up, each one thinking that they've got one of only 5 copies. Really, I don't think it's any rarer than any other obscure Casablanca release. I had a much harder time finding Alec R Costandinos' two soundtrack LPs. Having said that, despite being disowned by its creators, the Lightning album is actually pretty good. |

| How about "Do You Love What You Feel" by Rufus & Chaka. I think this 12" was strictly a promotional copy. |

| Now we all know South Shore Commission is a must have for 12" Disco collectors, as it was the first promo 12" released in early 75. I just wondered if anybody has got, or ever seen a copy of Moment of Truth : "So Much For Love"? This been the first 12" single ever, Tom Moulton pressed up a handful of copies only to hand out to DJ's in New York for feedback/reaction (test pressing only, late74/early75). He also had pressed just before this 12" a 10" of "I'll Be Holding On" by Al Downing, first 10" single (due to the fact that they had run out of 7" plates). This must be the rarest piece, as there was only one copy probably pressed for test purposes! Maybe some of the more qualified 12" collectors on here could shed some light on this subject, credit to you all for really knowing your stuff. Mark |

| To go back to the original question by Rab, I love Whistle Bump by Deodato. I would say along with Claus Ogerman, he is my favourate stings arranger. I first got into Brazilian music because of tracks by him, Sergio Mendes The Real Thing 12" & Gary Criss Rio De Janeiro 12" (have the Brazilian LP on Amazon Records, different gatefold sleeve with him sitting up on Corcovado overlooking Rio). I managed to get my U.S. promo copy of Whistle Bump in the early 80's, swapped it for a promo copy of Shame on RCA (UK press is only the LP version). Good to see that he's releasing music and playing gigs again, highlight of North Sea Jazz Festival in Holland 2002. Look out for a Wave 12" he did the string arrangments for in 2002 called Awakaning. He also did a nice film style LP in Brazil for London Records in 1970 called Percepcao, not like his CTI releases! Mark |

Even when the US bootleg came out, the original would still turn up on record lists for between £5 - £10. And when people twigged 'Together Forever' was the sample source for Raven Maize's 'Forever Together', it really got noticed. I've had a few copies and most of the old-timers I know have doubles, so to me, it's not that rare a record. I'll put it down as 'tricky'. |
