Default The Winners

I'm new to this forum, and this is my first post. So please go easy on me.
In the late 70's early 80's i was really into the jazz/funk scene and l've got all the classic tracks on CD, i-Pod etc. The one band i can't seem to get any imformation on were called 'The Winners' and they had an album/single called 'I getting ready for the future'. A real dance floor filler! Any imformation on the band and how to get their album would be brilliant.
Thanks

Hi tonyg777,

And welcome.

There was just a recent thread about this group in the forum titled Funk, Jazz, Northern Soul, Rare Grooves.

Here is a link to that thread.

http://www.discomusic.com/forums/fun...-debut-lp.html

Even though that discussion did not get far, please add to the conversation. It's obvious there are some other fans.

I myself, have no knowledge of The Winners, but I hope I have helped in a small way.

The album was a sleeper hit back in 1978...The album was issued on 2 different labels : Roadshow and Ariola America [but with the Roadshow logo featured on the label].The 12inch with Get ready for the future and Love is free came out on the United Artists label in Europe... I like to think that they were all under the same umbrella.

The album was produced by Fred Frank & Steve Tyrell and the strings were arranged by disco pioneer Meco Monardo.

Thankyou for your help. The 'Winners' LP is on it's way to me, from Canada, at this very moment! My next query is about a Funky group from about 1978/79 called Sun. Can anyone give me any mformation about them? Also did George Benson ever do a track called 'Supership' l'm sure i used to hear it at a Northern Soul alnighter i used to go to in the mid seventies
Thanks

Vinyllife and I had the thrill of a lifetime recently when an early 70's DJ brought over AND played for us his precious collection of 45s he used back in the early days ...

When i get that experience posted one of the things I will say is

Biggest unexpected "SURPRISE" HIGHLIGHT :

33) SUPERSHIP - George "Bad" Benson
(CTI) B= 19; C= 5; Total points = 24
5 weeks on the chart (5/17 - 5/31; 6/14; 7/5/75); Peak: #26

TonyG, you may like this youtube clip: The Northern Soul Scene - Ernie Bush "Breakaway" then George Benson "Supership", which I've never heard before nice tune.

Thankyou Ashley K. I watched the clip, it brought back some great memories. As a teenager living in Gloucestershire i couldn't afford to go to the famous Northern Soul venues like Wigan Casino. But there was a weekly Northern and Funk All-nighter a few miles away in Yate. I remember hearing 'Supership' there , over the years i've built up a large
Northern Soul collection on CD(i can't afford vinyl); but i can't find the George Benson track anywhere. Thanks again

Glad to help TonyG, I wanted to check the track out as I'm not really a northern soul connoisseur myself and wouldn't have considered "Supership" being mixed in with northern soul, but finding it with northern soul clip I thought I'd post it, that's trouble with pigeon holing musical styles it tends narrow down the type of tunes that you think fit in it, you forget that a much wider range of records got played on some of these nights.
In "Supership" it's the fog horn type sound that gets me, makes me want to drop a bit of the "shipping forecast" in for some added silliness.
It seem that "Supership" only made it to a seven and couple CTI LP comps, and I've had a good search and I don't think it's found it's way on to CD yet, I wouldn't normally suggest this but someone has posted the "CTI Artists - Fire Into Music" LP which has George Benson's "Supership" on a blog, otherwise it's down to picking it up on vinyl.
