.. I must mention some newly extended disco/philly dance classics now available on 12" ..

.. check out Underdog Edits volume 12 (Underdog Records, USA) which newly extends Love Committee "Pass the buck" b/w Black Ivory "Longer ride" .. listen to the soundclips on Juno:
UNDERDOG EDITS - Underdog Edits 12

.. also check out Underdog Edits volume 11, which also extends Revelation "Are you ready for this" b/w The Dells "Get on down" .. listen to the soundclips on Juno:
UNDERDOG EDITS - Underdog Edits #11

.. not simply re-edits, these are complete & extended songs .. sounding pretty much as they should, had they been issued on 12" thirty years ago .. projects like this are worth supporting (although I rather doubt the original artists receive any real benefit other than a general exposure to their music .. some members on this site have a rather dim view of CD bootlegs, but remain silent on the topic of bootleg & white-label re-edits .. possibly because these vinyl releases are considered to be promotional DJ tools, remaining within the confined world of underground dance music .. )

On the issue of performers royalty payments, here is a link to an article about Nancy Sinatra testifying before congress on that subject.

Nancy Sinatra joins the fight for radio royalty | Entertainment | People | Reuters

While I am all for royalty payments for performers, I am also for bootleg mixes and edits.

And while we have discussed Patrick Cowley before, isn't he one of the original renegade DJ's to do his own "bootleg" mixes.

I was in Germany when he did the "I Feel Love" remix, so I would like to ask discomusic.com members a question to help clear up a rumour:

Did Casablanca originally go after Patrick Cowley for that mix in the begining?

Does anybody know the story of how his mix got released on Casablanca?

Also, when I see "I Feel Love" on a TK records acetate, is that a remix/re-edit?

.. hello needlefingers .. Patrick Cowley remixed "I feel love" for the exclusive US Disconet DJ subscription club .. and when the tune blew up in the clubs Casablanca negotiated a deal with Disconet, releasing the remix on 12" vinyl in the UK where it became a big hit on the British pop chart in 1982 ..

.. hello RobbaDobba .. there is a 9 minute remix of "Date with the rain" by Eddie Kendricks b/w the alternate / original mix of Diana Ross "Love hangover" (it is said Diana got a little drunk during the recording of this original take)

.. the Kendricks track is rumoured to have been remixed by Tom Moulton ..

.. I guess we'll never know .. but it is very good, complete with thunder & heavy rain during the breakdown ..

.. this 12" is on the white Motown label .. copies are still available for sale .. if you are interested check the following links:

Thank you ashley. A DJ told me years ago that there initially was a fight over his mix. I quess it's not true.

It's not actually a "remix". It's done completely from the 2'41", 7" version.
But it is a miraculous computer-edit/overlay job!

I bought the Date With The Rain 12" and was so disappointed with it that I made my own extended mix. I don't remember how long it was, but I essentially pulled apart the intro section, since the left and right channels differ, and make extended breakdowns with each channel. It's not 100% clean sounding, but it was more satisfying than the repeat edits in the Date With The Rain 12".Thanks for the links on those Philly re-edits. I'd probably be more excited if they were pure remixes from the original master tapes. Edits I can do myself, and I've done them many times. I'd rather pay to hear something from a song, from its basic elements. For me, the best edit job I ever heard was the PAJ remix of Music by Montreal Sound. It was done back in '77 and even though I first heard it a few years ago, it blew my mind on how ahead of its time it sounded. It wasn't lazy like many re-edits I've heard over the years.Disco Funk

Thanks Ashley-I'm a big fan of the Underdog series.
There are two that I'm crazy about-the Gloria Gaynor
"Casanova Brown" and especially the Jackson 5's
"Mirror's of my Mind"-alot of these, like the Dells "No
Way Back" remind me of what Ron Hardy used to do.
I also like the Ugly Edit series-similar in style.I
recently bought Etta James "In the Basement" and
I dare anyone to sit still during this one-amazing!

Thom

PS-Ashley,I just got the Andrea True "Partyline" edit
in the mail yesterday you tipped me off to-thanks
again!

.. hello thommy2458

.. glad you enjoy the Ashley Beedle "Party line" remix .. and I agree with your comments about the Underdog Edits .. the Gloria Gayner & Brenda Russell re-edits are superb ..

.. however I'm not a big fan of the Theo Parish Ugly Edits series .. his style is to extend the track by repeating the same 4 beat bar over & over & over again (presumably sending the dancer into a deep trance) .. unfortunately I find the whole effect deeply annoying .. interestingly, on Ugly Edits #4 Theo tackles The Dells "Get on down" .. consistently repeating the beats before the strings arrive .. teasing the crowd by making them wait for the catchy string line hook .. alternatively on Underdog Edits #11 the same track is remixed to extend the string elements .. which of course are the best bits of the record .. of the 2 versions I much prefer the Underdog Edit as it sounds like an extended 12" single from 30 years ago (presumably this is how the track would have sounded had Mercury extended the original 4 minute album track for a 12" release back in 1977)

I checked out the audio samples, and while a number of them remain faithful to the originals (although one of them has a really bad edit, where the music jarringly changes sections), I'm still not a fan of those types of releases. Heck, I don't like it when I come across a 12" from back in the day that says it's an extended remix, only to find they've tagged on a break from the middle onto the beginning (like one of the Revanche's remixes - Music Man, I think); or just repeated the verses of the songs, like most of the Bee Gees extended mixes or the Jackson's UK Enjoy Yourself.

Anything I can do myself with my copies of the same songs I'd rather not pay money. Only something like that Montreal Sound remix, which would be too ambitious for even me to attempt, would be worth the money for me. But it would have to be something done back in the 70s before the digital audio age.

.. hmm ..

.. well, if I could travel back in time 30 years & present my teenage self with these same Underdog Edit / remixed 12" singles .. there's no doubt (having got over the initial shock of meeting somebody from the future, who looks remarkably like my father, giving away white-label vinyls) I would have much prefered these new & extended mixes to the shorter original versions .. ( I would also be left pondering the notion that the quality of 12" pressings hasn't improved much in over a quarter of a century) ..

.. as I think I've said already (this site's a bit like time travel anyway) .. many of the best Disconet mixes were nothing more than clever re-edits .. "Hold on to my love" by Jimmy Ruffin & that silly Three Degrees remix that goes for hundreds of dollars on E-Bay are just 2 examples of very skilful re-editing ..

.. and who cares if Tom Moulton & other interested parties survive into the digital age remixing, re-editing & remastering our old disco treasures ..

.. some of them (the best ones) blow fresh air into these dusty old classics, bringing them alive for a whole new generation to love & enjoy ..

.. there's probably some 17 year old kid out there someplace who will shortly discover The Dells "Get on down" for the first time .. and it may just become the soundtrack to his life ..

Thumbs up Re: Newly extended disco/philly classics on 12"

Kinda agree with Ashley on this one. I love re-editing the old toons myself as a bit of a hobby, but also love some of these re-edits like the Underdog and the Krivit stuff that make it onto to vinyl and if I could only get hold of more of the old Disconet and Hot tracks stuff I'd be well happy.
Sometimes taking intros and making mid breaks and visa versa is really cleverly done and gives excitement to some of these old tracks especially if you were used to hearing the 2min 59 (example) version.

I bought the UK Creole 12" version of this single a little while ago, exactly the same as this:
Montreal Sound Music (12") Disco Music.com

I was disappointed to discover that the B side (listed as "Part II (Disco)"), whilst it is the same version as in the youtube clip you posted, it fades out at the 8:00 mark, meaning you don't get the sudden ending where the track starts going backwards.

In contrast, the TK issue, whilst it is listed as 8:00, actually seems to be more of the order of 8:50. It seems Creole decided to edit the track to fit the timing!

Unsurprisingly, "Music!" was a big hit here in Montreal
PAJ remix services have their own website setup and several other remixes are listed there Site officiel PAJ Disco Mix
