Well honestly I wasn't that DJ focused per say ... I cared who was DJing that night if I were going to a club where a DJ friend played.... but other than that I wasn't concerned about it. DJ's jumped clubs a lot or played only certain nights anyway .... I frequented various clubs because I liked the crowd or the club setting . My best disco experiences took place at LA's Studio One even though I've no idea who that was up there DJing ... likely several guys over the years ...
....While I have been in attendance when a DJ's set was agonizingly disastrous... and have even witnessed a club slowly vacate .... I typically found most DJs quite capable.

Yes Bobby at Trocadero was an important part of the total experience of that club ... he possessed a certain intuitive gift in how to work a crowd .... Yet when he moved to Dreamland that wasn't enough to make me switch. I didn't like the broader vibe at Dreamland the way I did Troc's where I had great times both during and after Bobby's reign ..... I should mention that a Tim Rivers night at the I-Beam never disappointed .... but again that club just did it for me even if it weren't him up there ....

Did anyone ever hear of Jimmy Stuard who tragically died at the died at the Everard Baths fire. He played at 12 West amongst others? Many people swore he was the best there was. Here is what Barry Lederer had to say..."I MUST COMMENT THAT AMONG THE GREAT DJS AT 12 WEST WAS JIMMY STUARD, WHOSE LIFE WAS CUT OFF TOO SOON.HIS POTENTIAL FOR GREATNESS IS UNPARALLED"

Even though I'm not a heavy hitter.LOL
I would say..
Bobby Guttadaro His work with Disconet plus the fact that he TURNED the Ice Palace OUT~!!,Bobby Viteritti. When I had time off from the Copa I would go to The Poop Deck and his style was incredible and his energy was always on blast plus his legendary work atTrocadero Transfer.,Larry Levan."and the fact that he did his own thing as what made him so Fabulous.and of course Frankie Knuckles..How could you leave out the Godfather of house who started out working with Larry at The Continental Baths.I would have loved to have heard Stephen as in L Freeman play..I had left Copa by then..
But I still may have that chance

Here are some of the Dj's I heard spin live back in the day that blew me away for being technically proficient, having excellent taste in music, and able to move a crowd. In no particular order:

Howard Merrit
Robblie Leslie
Richie "midnight mix" Rivera
Warren Gluck
Jim Burgess
Roy Thode
Michael Graber

all incredibly talented DJ's

Based on tapes Ive heard(I wasnt born when these were at their peak), the best 3 would be Thode, Burgess and Viteritti. Have heard loads of tapes by all and theyre all technically superb

Also Larry Levan and Frankie Knuckles, while excellent DJs, would be nearly as good at mixing as the aforementioned 3 IMO
