So what's your definition of the term 'cheesy' then?
I'm just wondering because I always associate cheesy music with
a) schmaltz and
b) a production solely made for a quick buck by exploiting the popularity of a current hit or popular music style without really putting any effort into it.
So even songs I hear for the first time and that never were a commercial success can sound cheesy to me.
So 99% of all House music is cheesy! Certainly that much of it had little to no effort put into it.

My definition of Cheesy would be more or less the same, but I'd add the word kitsch to the equation. However, some records, despite passing all the obvious tests, just sound cheesy. To my (English) ears, at least 50% of what came out of the USA and Europe during the Disco years sounded somewhat cheesy, some of it beyond belief. Hence my loathing for a lotta discs that pass for 'classics' with many of the people who inhabit this site. We all have a cross to bear.

BTW: In case anyone didn't get my little piece of irony, when I wrote,
Quote:
Right now, as I type, ironically I'm listening to that ultra cheesy track Shame by Evelyn 'Champagne' King...sigh!
I meant the opposite. I've seen Shame quoted as being cheesy many a time and there's no denying it's one of maybe a dozen tracks that ends up on every other Disco themed compilation CD. It has also been played to death, BUT it's still one of the best.

I thought so & was going to post something to say that you were being ironic that early this morning - except one of my cats threw up - so had to clear up after the little creature! On that track - I have acqured several copies of the 12" as I have bought or been given record collections over the years. It was (well certainly in the UK) a mainstay in everyone's collection - I remember when I first heard it in 1977 in Samantha's in Old Burlington Street, London W1!!

I don't understand, honestly...how could a track like "Shame" by Evelyn Champagne King be called "cheesy"? Must be something about the lyrics that offends people, as the music and the singing certainly are top notch. And anyway, the lyrics aren't "cheesy", they are classic girl group stuff. You don't call 60's girl groups cheesy, do you, and Evelyn kinda directly comes from there.
Cheesy in a good way: Susana Estrada, Ja-Fe, Jeannette and hundreds of other sexy eurodisco sirens. Love those. Cheesy in a bad way: Eurovision song contest music, and of course country and western. Hate those.

It is funny...I have spent so much time convincing myself that what I love is important. It has finally sunk it because now I grow for myself and not others. Being proud of what I stand for.

Disco music is very powerful for me - I love the energy I get from it and the feel of love and even though it may appear that many projects are formulated, isn't most music genres extended catalogues anyway?

I do not "bonk" on today’s music - because I remember what a time I had defending disco music as a teenager to hardcore rock lovers and so on... It just is not what I am looking to hear - do I think it is lesser than? No. It is just different. When we start to break down music is when our own flaws show - even in our music.

This discussion is wonderful - but always reminds me that adoring it is the only way to love it.

Thanks, all!

I don't know what cheese is like as I've never eaten any (could never eat anything that smells that bad!); most people I know think that cheese is wonderful so it isn't really a bad thing I gather.

That's an interesting bit of gossip Dayna! I often wonder what artists are like as people. I know that many producers have reputations for being meglomaniacs & unpleasant but you rarely hear of singers/musicians being not nice. I tend to not believe alot of stuff I hear about mega acts like Diana Ross & Barbra Steisand because alot of people are jealous of their success but I do believe someone like you who genuinely knows many acts & has no dubious motives. Keep the gossip coming girl, I love it!

I never found Diana to have an attitude..
The only time she gets Diva-Roucious is when the sound check goes bad."something techincal"
Or if you undermind her authority during one of her projects..She has a vision and it has to come together or she gets understandibly upset.
Another with an ultra STANK attitude is Anita Baker..No one wants to work with her..Great talent..Bad vibe..
(But you aint heard that from me cause I aint one to gossip).
"Miss Benita Butrell" In Living Color, use to say that and I would lol

I'm not sure where you're getting your information Quinny to claim that ....but then I''ll guess they also feel that way about most 70's music in general ....
and, it doesn't matter if disco is considered rubbish by 99.9 per cent of the younger people nowadays.
It was that way back in the day too !

Disco is for a very select crowd ... the few , the chosen , the bold and the brave ... the privileged who get it .

But in answer to the question being asked : NO .... disco is not the cheesiest music ever .

That distinction is a tie between

Paul McCartney's post Beatles stuff (someone's knockin at my door ... someone's ringing the bell !... Do me a favor .... open the door ....and let 'em in )

and Elton John's post Bernie Taupin output .......

Wow, Remmy, we both are connecting here, WE ARE CONNECTING!!!

I could even go deeper here and reveal that Disco is given to us by THE Higher Force...

But I'm gonna scare some peeps I suppose. Maybe for some other thread in another subforum, somehow, somewhere in summertime!

I couldn't agree with you more, Glenn! Well said!

I'm always astonished when people come together in a forum that (I think ) is meant to unite, educate, support and inform and then they bring a negative slant to the very thing that was meant to bring them all together in the first place.

We all have different tastes, likes and dislikes. I've discovered many artists and songs because of this board that I didn't know of before. Some, I share in the passion of those who recommend them, others, I'm baffled. But that's OK.

There are many artists and songs discussed here that, if I wanted to, I could tear apart - musically and otherwise. But who does that benefit? I'm actually happy that artists or songs that don't appeal to me, do appeal to others. If I was to post about how kitsch, or cheesy or horrible I felt a certain artist is, that might only prevent someone else from taking a chance to discover them for themselves.

I very much appreciate your comment. Thank you.

nothing has changed since the beginning anyways so why dwell on it? Kids today like songs that they can krump to or have a good bass sound, etc. etc. 70's music is considered ancient now. You look on you tube comments on certain tracks... and the response from some people that are under 20 years of age is positive and are glad they they clicked on the link.

On the other hand... we don't like their music, haha.

I think to a certain extent its all about musical pallet adjustment, I've always loved disco but never really investigated it too much until I met my current lady (she cant get enough of it). I came to disco from a soul/funk background and at first I wanted disco that was a slight step away from that (songs like five special "why leave us alone" etc) and I considered things like Love in C minor almost unlistenable they were so cheesy... and then I began to get it..

I think disco songs take a lot longer to grow on you than other genres as well, you can hear a funk song and although the tune doesnt hit you straight away the er... funk does. I've lost count of the number of disco songs I thought were utterly without merit on my first listen but are now on constant I-pod rotation..

Forgive my total waffle, i'm new to all this forumming nonsense, hopefully my posts will get more concise with time!

Oh please. Disco is as classy and sophisticated as you can get with popular music, especially with all those violins and string instruments. The only cheesy "disco songs" are those songs which lack strings and are therefore erroneously called "disco."

Listen to this disco music and tell me this music isn't classy and refined:

Charo and the Salsoul Orchestra Concierto De Aranjuez (1979) - Song - MP3 Stream on IMEEM Music

BLACK LIGHT ORCHESTRA ONCE UPON A TIME - Song - MP3 Stream on IMEEM Music

Armada Orchestra Band Of Gold (1975) - Song - MP3 Stream on IMEEM Music

The Love Unlimited Orchestra Love's Theme - Song - MP3 Stream on IMEEM Music

BIDDU ORCHESTRA Rain forest - Song - MP3 Stream on IMEEM Music

Larry Page Orchestra Just A Little Bit - Song - MP3 Stream on IMEEM Music

Black Light Orchestra Let's Try Once Again - Song - MP3 Stream on IMEEM Music

Magic Disco Machine Midnight Rhapsody - Song - MP3 Stream on IMEEM Music

Biddu Orchestra Aranjuez Mon Amour - Song - MP3 Stream on IMEEM Music

Shirley Bassey This is my life (long version) - Song - MP3 Stream on IMEEM Music

Larry Page Orchestra Slinky Things (Disco Version) - Song - MP3 Stream on IMEEM Music

Ralph MacDonald You Are In Love - Song - MP3 Stream on IMEEM Music

Biddu Orchestra Summer Of '42 - Song - MP3 Stream on IMEEM Music

Charo and the Salsoul Orchestra Stay With Me - Song - MP3 Stream on IMEEM Music

Pattie Brooks and Simon Orchestra Girl Don't Make Me Wait - Song - MP3 Stream on IMEEM Music

Ruth Waters Never Gonna Be The Same - Song - MP3 Stream on IMEEM Music

Paul Mauriat Orchestra EL BIMBO (Original Disco Version) - Song - MP3 Stream on IMEEM Music

Moment of Truth Orchestra Helplessly (instrumental) - 1976 - Song - MP3 Stream on IMEEM Music

Shirley & Company Cry, Cry, Cry (Disco Instrumental) - Song - MP3 Stream on IMEEM Music

I guess 30 years on is a big enough time span to totally alienate young people from it and (for people less than 20/25) not realise a particular record's place in the whole scheme of things.

Such is life.
