Discussion on Disco...The Cheesiest music ever? within the Disco Music of the 70s and 80s forums, part of the General Music Discussions at DiscoMusic.com category; So what's your definition of the term 'cheesy' then? I'm just wondering because I always associate cheesy music with a) ...

My definition of Cheesy would be more or less the same, but I'd add the word kitsch to the equation. However, some records, despite passing all the obvious tests, just sound cheesy. To my (English) ears, at least 50% of what came out of the USA and Europe during the Disco years sounded somewhat cheesy, some of it beyond belief. Hence my loathing for a lotta discs that pass for 'classics' with many of the people who inhabit this site. We all have a cross to bear. | I thought so & was going to post something to say that you were being ironic that early this morning - except one of my cats threw up - so had to clear up after the little creature! On that track - I have acqured several copies of the 12" as I have bought or been given record collections over the years. It was (well certainly in the UK) a mainstay in everyone's collection - I remember when I first heard it in 1977 in Samantha's in Old Burlington Street, London W1!! |

| I don't understand, honestly...how could a track like "Shame" by Evelyn Champagne King be called "cheesy"? Must be something about the lyrics that offends people, as the music and the singing certainly are top notch. And anyway, the lyrics aren't "cheesy", they are classic girl group stuff. You don't call 60's girl groups cheesy, do you, and Evelyn kinda directly comes from there. Cheesy in a good way: Susana Estrada, Ja-Fe, Jeannette and hundreds of other sexy eurodisco sirens. Love those. Cheesy in a bad way: Eurovision song contest music, and of course country and western. Hate those. |

| It is funny...I have spent so much time convincing myself that what I love is important. It has finally sunk it because now I grow for myself and not others. Being proud of what I stand for. Disco music is very powerful for me - I love the energy I get from it and the feel of love and even though it may appear that many projects are formulated, isn't most music genres extended catalogues anyway? I do not "bonk" on today’s music - because I remember what a time I had defending disco music as a teenager to hardcore rock lovers and so on... It just is not what I am looking to hear - do I think it is lesser than? No. It is just different. When we start to break down music is when our own flaws show - even in our music. This discussion is wonderful - but always reminds me that adoring it is the only way to love it. Thanks, all! Disco Power! That's an interesting bit of gossip Dayna! I often wonder what artists are like as people. I know that many producers have reputations for being meglomaniacs & unpleasant but you rarely hear of singers/musicians being not nice. I tend to not believe alot of stuff I hear about mega acts like Diana Ross & Barbra Steisand because alot of people are jealous of their success but I do believe someone like you who genuinely knows many acts & has no dubious motives.

The only time she gets Diva-Roucious is when the sound check goes bad."something techincal" Or if you undermind her authority during one of her projects..She has a vision and it has to come together or she gets understandibly upset Another with an ultra STANK attitude is Anita Baker (But you aint heard that from me cause I aint one to gossip). "Miss Benita Butrell" In Living Color, use to say that and I would lol

and, it doesn't matter if disco is considered rubbish by 99.9 per cent of the younger people nowadays. It was that way back in the day too ! Disco is for a very select crowd ... the few , the chosen , the bold and the brave ... the privileged who get it . But in answer to the question being asked : NO .... disco is not the cheesiest music ever . That distinction is a tie between Paul McCartney's post Beatles stuff (someone's knockin at my door ... someone's ringing the bell !... Do me a favor .... open the door ....and let 'em in and Elton John's post Bernie Taupin output ....... ******

| Wow, Remmy, we both are connecting here, WE ARE CONNECTING!!! I could even go deeper here and reveal that Disco is given to us by THE Higher Force... But I'm gonna scare some peeps I suppose. Maybe for some other thread in another subforum, somehow, somewhere in summertime! |

I'm always astonished when people come together in a forum that (I think ) is meant to unite, educate, support and inform and then they bring a negative slant to the very thing that was meant to bring them all together in the first place. We all have different tastes, likes and dislikes. I've discovered many artists and songs because of this board that I didn't know of before. Some, I share in the passion of those who recommend them, others, I'm baffled. But that's OK. There are many artists and songs discussed here that, if I wanted to, I could tear apart - musically and otherwise. But who does that benefit? I'm actually happy that artists or songs that don't appeal to me, do appeal to others. If I was to post about how kitsch, or cheesy or horrible I felt a certain artist is, that might only prevent someone else from taking a chance to discover them for themselves. I very much appreciate your comment. Thank you. |

| nothing has changed since the beginning anyways so why dwell on it? Kids today like songs that they can krump to or have a good bass sound, etc. etc. 70's music is considered ancient now. You look on you tube comments on certain tracks... and the response from some people that are under 20 years of age is positive and are glad they they clicked on the link. On the other hand... we don't like their music, haha. |

| I think to a certain extent its all about musical pallet adjustment, I've always loved disco but never really investigated it too much until I met my current lady (she cant get enough of it). I came to disco from a soul/funk background and at first I wanted disco that was a slight step away from that (songs like five special "why leave us alone" etc) and I considered things like Love in C minor almost unlistenable they were so cheesy... and then I began to get it.. I think disco songs take a lot longer to grow on you than other genres as well, you can hear a funk song and although the tune doesnt hit you straight away the er... funk does. I've lost count of the number of disco songs I thought were utterly without merit on my first listen but are now on constant I-pod rotation.. Forgive my total waffle, i'm new to all this forumming nonsense, hopefully my posts will get more concise with time! |
