GREAT suggestions, folks! Man, I'm busy digging these up. LOVE IT!!

Also, just to answer the derail earlier, my parents (who were both born in 1931) loved my disco music back in the day. They got a big kick out of hearing so many of their own tunes disco-fied. In fact, my dad used to have me make him tapes of some of the disco music he liked. He still digs "Disco Inferno" at the ripe ol' age of 77! I think, in fact, was exposure to their music--and then my older brother's Beatle records-- that helped influence my tastes. You take some Burt Bacharach and give him some Beatles influence...

Yes, it's Come Into My Heart, of course (I wrote it wrong). Could you explain me why it's not an instrumental? Read this:

On the other hand, I wonder how would I feel instrumentals without previous knowledge of the vocal versions, like in:

Sylvester - Do Ya Wanna Funk
Queen - Another One Bites The Dust

Would they be boring and ineffective? A question I can solve immediatly thinking of the powerful instrumentals of Souvenirs by Voyage, and Body Music by The Strikers.

Now I'll take advantage of the chance to add:

El Coco - Afrodesia
Amant - If There's Love
Beautiful Bend - Make That Feeling Come Again

For my money, "Come Into My Heart" is not an instrumental. Same as I wouldn't consider Silver Convention's "Get Up And Boogie" or "Fly Robin Fly" an instrumental, and those have LESS lyrics.

To each his own...

It certainly has instrumental passages like a lot of disco music has but the vocals always seemed to be integral parts of the song to me.

Consider these 2 as successful instrumentals, that weren't intended to be(?)

"Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman" by Sounds of Inner City
West End - WES 12102, 1976
Produced, Arranged and Conducted by Vince Montana for Valle-DeAngelis Productions (DeAngelis also Produced Philly USA's "Speak Well", WES 12106 & 12106X)

This is a quintessential Salsoul Orchestra instrumental. A must-have for Vince Montana fans. It says it's mixed by Tom Moulton (although Montana claims that's not true..) and he made the vocal version the B-side @ 3'20". With the instrumental as the A-side @ 6'19". A wise decision, as the lounge-lizardesque vocal sounds like Tony Pilar, from "Valley of The Dolls".

It was re-released (VERY briefly) with Jakki's "You Are The Star" on the flip, when West End did their classic series. (1990's?)

"Living Again" by Ronald Benjamin.
Tune Wizard - 001, 1980

This is probably WAY too obscure, but it bears mention. Released to the Record Pools, with a rubber-stamped info label, this record was a complete Hustle throwback. Too dated to play when it was released, especially with it's mid-70's arrangement, and (again) lounge-lizard male vocal.
But the instrumental holds-up great on it's own. And it's a picture-perfect record to do the Hustle to. I used it quite a bit, to appease the Hustle dancers that were hold-overs from the 70's and came to the Miami clubs I worked at, in the early 80's.

Boris Midney is mostly a composer/arranger, as can be seen (or heard, rather) from the productions (USA-European Connection, Beautiful Bend, Festival, Double Discovery, etc..) we're all familiar with. As such, most of his productions are based on developed orchestral arrangements rather than vocals, which is why I guess you consider "Come into my heart" instrumental. However, it's really constructed as a regular vocal track (recurring choruses...), albeit cut-up with extended (instrumental) breaks. Imagine making a version totally devoid of vocals. Would you notice the difference? Absolutely!!

Compare that with
The Brothers Johnson: "Thunder Thumbs and Ligthnin’ Licks"
where there's a vocal intervention ("That's Deep!", then laughter), but it's really more like an improvised effect than a written part of the track.

Van McCoy's "Jet Setting", on the other hand, is mostly an instrumental, but with "jet set" regularly sung into the mix, along with "uuu uuu uuu uuu uuu" during the oboe solos. I'm not sure how to categorize this one.

It's funny, I was just listening "Love Theme From King Kong" by Barry White on youtube, and I remembered how much I liked it, even though it was not a big commercial hit for Barry. I still have the 12" in storage with my other stuff.

As far as I'm concerned, anything with more than one line of vocals or wordless vocal harmony is NOT AN INSTRUMENTAL!!!

Great thread !

I see Deodato's excellent "Night Cruiser" being mentioned.
Have these other ones been mentioned too ? :

Knights of Fantasy

Whistle Bump

Here's one below which i discovered on this forum.
It's actually a semi-instrumental track called "Stomp Your Feet to the Beat", by Herbie Mann :

David Shire - Manhattan Skyline
