Good example of what I mean......Quick - Rhythm Of The Jungle. A year ago I would have been ectatic to have it on a CD, BUT I already have it on Disco Giants. So why hasn't Ben sought out Zulu (THE track everyone around here would want, given the choice) instead?

I understand it ain't easy, BUT to me, this latest release shows that both Ben and Sony are playing it safe to maximise sales. In one way I can't blame him, 'cos it's better to keep the series going through healthy sales figures, BUT.........his DJ instincts must be niggling away at his brain, surely.

This caught my eye:

Quote:
9 the Chaplin Band - Il Viliero 11:59
Quote:
(original 12" version)
Presented in it's full length Il Viliero takes you on an almost 12 minute trip of early dutch produced disco. Having traced the master back to the original company nothing else was left than a 7" version. This version is compiled from 2 carefull vinyl transfers from 2 copies using the DenonDL-160 Moving Coil. All pops have been removed by hand over several hours and I hope I got them all.

Is this the same tune as the one below??? If so, which is the correct spelling of the title??? Billboard & other sources I checked had it this way....

50) IL VELIERO ("The Sail Ship") - Lucio Battisti
(RCA- Canada 12-inch: 6:06)
9 points/ 1 chart = Montreal
BDA Top 40: n/c
DCC chart: 6 weeks on chart // Last week: #44 (-6)

"Il Veliero" was the Italian version of the Spanish hit "El Veliero". The Chaplin Band from Holland had a massive summer hit with that. The original is indeed by Lucio Battisti who of course also has an Italian version.

Quinny, you're right about your statements. Is it just playing safe or is it a copyright and/or mastertape problem, I don't know.

Maybe he has other tracks in the working for a future release. Let's hope.

BTW, Ben is not an underground guy. So he won't walk the path of Dimitri From Paris or Joey Negro IMO. They are really going after very rare stuff. And considering that he couldn't find "The Runner" for the 4th box proves to me that all this is much more difficult than we imagine.

I'm willing to give him A CERTAIN AMOUNT OF LEEWAY, because I realise this is a problem, BUT he was a DJ so he knows which tracks will have more kudos than others.

At the rate of one compilation per year (of this series) I'll be dead and gone before he gets to any 'interesting' releases.

I've always been a supporter of Ben exactly for the reason you state. Before now I remember saying something like "he doesn't spend most of his time stuck up his own ass" or words to that effect. I don't expect him to release 'trainspotter' tracks, but this latest release just catches me as being a tad lazy and very, very safe. If Dimitri et al can release CDs with the most obscure tracks in the world (supposedly cleared for copyright) why can't Ben fill the gap of releasing tracks from every DJ's playlists i.e. tracks that were actually played en masse BITD and would actually be wanted today? On this latest release, there are just too many tracks that anyone and everyone must already have (some in abundance). I feel that HIS judgement has been demoted in preference to some unknown 'face' at Sony corporate.

The one that caught my interest the most , as I typically savor earlier EW&F, and here was one by them I'd never heard of :

One of the few special 12" versions we didn't have yet.

But then I viewed it on Youtube :
(heaven forbid someone should want to view this &%$@ !!!!)

OK if interested view it this way : YouTube - Earth Wind & Fire - Thinking of You

What's it doing on the "pure disco" CD ???

Not much earth ... not much fire ... mainly wind and even that wouldn't fill a sail !!

My how far they'd descended from their more cosmic spiritual days ...

Guessing it mixed well with Janet ....

Well, like most of you have said I didn't see anything so rare or so exciting that jumped out at me. Also as stated, some tracks that are 12" aren't in length. I'll pass on this one.
I will contact Ben though for my own recommendations for his next project.

Anyone who has suggestions should e-mail him. He usually answers back.

I asked him via e-mail if "Knock On Wood" came from master tape or a needledrop and he responded to me that it is indeed from a recently discovered master tape!

E-mail address is on his website: http://benliebrand.nl/info/index.html

First thing, after I got over the excitement of a Volume 5 being released, was reading the tracklist and getting to The Quick - and I thought for a second, wow Zulu Man finally on a proper CD! Then of course, I see its Rhythm of the Jungle instead (still a great song) but I agree Quinny that Zulu would have been the choice if he could get it.

I am absolutely buying this. I finally decided to buy the first 4 volumes last year, and I think that what Liebrand is doing needs to be supported. While not always perfect, I love the fact that he is attempting to seek out these rare long versions and present them in as close to master quality as he can find. I don't see anyone else doing as comprehensive a job trying to save this great music, so I hope he can keep digging up great songs for many more volumes.

By way of contrast, there's lots of stuff like "Two Hot For Love", "Here Comes That Sound Again", "Hills Of Katmandu", Amant's "If There's Love, "Cocomotion", D.D. Sound's "Café", Montana's "A Dance Fantasy" and so on which are either not available in legit CD form at all or only are available on CD in edited form and/or with lacking sound quality.
I couldn't agree more!! Every track you named would be great to have on Volume 6, so I think its time to drop Ben an email.

Just an update - I preordered this from Amazon last week, it was due for release April 15th, however they have emailed me telling me that they don't have it yet. They do not know when it will ship. I might just order a copy from Ebay, unless someone knows a better vendor.

It was $69.99 at Amazon - the most I have paid for any of the previous 4 volumes was $45. That surprised me a bit.
