Okay... out of curiosity I just tracked down the Strange Spirits album and had a listen. I'd only ever heard (and loved) 'Walk The Night'... but my god, what a woeful album! Truly awful. I was hoping for at least one or two other gems like 'Walk'... oh well!

I do remember 'Life at the Outpost' now though... it was a massive hit here in Australia!

No, the producer is not Ben Dover but John Brenner.

When I heard it for the first time, I was a reluctant to find it any qualities but after a few listening tries I think that it is not too bad of a re-edit after all.

UPDATE:

According to Discogs, The Bent Boys is an alias for the Scatt Brothers...

I just can't find anyone to the name of John Brenner in the Scatt's.

Does anyone know more about this mystery?

I wouldn't be surprised if all of the members weren't gay--it was a fabricated band, some of the peopel had been invovled in severeal New York gay themed off broadway musicals (according to Queer Music Heritage) etc. Still it is odd that *********** online calls them a straight village people.

Life at the Outpost Video YouTube - Skatt Bros. - Life At The Outpost 1979

And yeah I find the album pretty awful besdies the great Walk the Night.

My favorite "Walk the Night" mix is the Disconet. You have to hear the addition of porno's Jeff Stryker
at key points in the song-as if it wasn't smutty enough!

I also love that Disconet mix of WALK THE NIGHT...[That's the one that incorporates elements of RELAX in it.]

As far as JOHN DRENNER is concerned ; he was involved with many HiNRG records coming from the Montreal scene.

He produced many tracks for GERALDINE CORDEAU who was signed to Matra Records. [She scored many hits "Sounds In The Night","Space & Time","Tell Me","Girl Talk" in 83/84.]

He also produced SUZY Q's cover of HARMONY with Jerry Cucuzella as well as CHERRY LIME's "Do You Like It" which was featured on the flipside of the NRG scorcher "Reconciliate".

LOVED Suzy Q's version of "Harmony". Played it, in place of the original for quite awhile. Like that BGM/Canada cover version of "Was That All It Was" by (what's her name), It was sooo close to the original, but with all the technical mistakes removed.

I have the Cherry Lime release of "Reconciliate/Do You Like It" on Miami Records. Distributed by Miami Records, Miami, FL.. Yet, it has a Sizzle Records catalogue number (SIZ-4002) and definitely Sizzle-esque graphics. Then there's that Grandmaster Flash, or Marly-Marl (or some hippity-hoppity somebody's...) destruction of Lime's "Reconciliate" on Prism Records.

Kris... Can you clear-up anything about these two releases? Were they, in fact the same recordings? And don't you find that "Do You Like It" sounds like a standard Denis LePage instrumental, ala "Magnum", "Hot Wax", "The Break", or "Agent 406"?

I remember meeting them at the 1980 Billboard Disco Convention in 1980 over here in LA. I then went and watched them perform at some rock club in the Valley a few months later. The tall one with the deep voice told me he used to be "miked" back stage during Village People concerts to sing bass. I think one or two were straight. We would talk about the rock and roll bands of the late 60's. They had a great sound.
I did have the LP cover signed by all members of the group, but I can't find it. I wish a CD of that LP would be issued. I wish the entire Casablanca Catalogue would be re-issued on CD.

Yes "Do You Like It" sounds very much like Denis Lepage's other ventures though he is not involved at all in this song.John Brenner is credited as sole writer and his production company co-produced with Joe Lagreca. The sound is pure Lime , make no mistake. I always envisioned the song as the closing theme for a gay-themed soap a la DANTE'S COVE or THE LAIR...

Here "Reconciliate" came out on one of my all-time favorite labels ; Power Records.

The Lime story is one complicated story... In more ways than one !!

Montrealer NRG producer Richard Buck became involved, producing Side B of the "A Brand New Day" album...which was odd because you'd get Denis & Denyse singing "Please Say You Will" then flip it and get original Lime-inspired Richard Buck songs with different vocalists. Buck did come up with one of my all-time favorite later Lime songs "Sentimentally Yours".

Remember when MITCH & MELANIE were dubbed "the touring" version of Lime ?

As far as I know Marley Marl "butchered" another Denis LePage project that came out on Prism : "You Can Do The Dancin'".This 1988 venture was indeed created and performed by Denis & Denyse.Marley Marl is credited as the remixer on all 4 versions of the song [12in Vocal/Inst./Dub/House Mix]. The 12in vocal could pass for a Hi-NRG mix but barely...the house mix is unebearable. The muted vocals, the slowed-down house-nation generic beats simply do not fit the song.

That "Was That All It Was" cover was done by Debbie Rose on BGM...and it was very good indeed. Having been such a fan of Jean Carn's version ; this one did not disappoint.

Funny thing about the BGM label and Lime ; In 1992,BGM released a 12in called GREATEST HITS OF D. & D. LePAGE - CHERRY-LIME Medley.
It's a 15 song medley introduced by a theme song [with lyrics like "D & D LePage gonna make you dance..." and sounding like a cross between LIME & DEAD OR ALIVE].The medley includes all the hits :
Your Love/Guilty/Come & Get Your Love/Together/Take It Up/Gold Digger/Alive & Well/I Don't Want Your Love/Angel Eyes/You're My Magician/Babe We're gonna Love Tonite/Unexpected Lovers/Your Love/Theme Song.

I haven't played the song in ages but I think the medley lasts over 15 minutes.

The whole Montréal Hi-NRG scene seemed intertwined like this. Katmandu went from Denis Lepage to Joe LaGreca and possibly others. I have a Trans-X album from the late 80s (On My Own) that is mostly Richard Buck (BTW, I'd assumed that was a pseudonym) whereas the classic "Living On Video" was by Pascal Languirand. However, Pascal appears to have some involvement in this album, I'm just not sure how much. Seems that the labels were anxious to keep their "brands" alive, even if the people behind the acts had moved on. It's even more perplexing when you consider how fickle club audiences are: an act is only as good as their last hit; there's very little fan loyalty like you would have with certain rock acts.

Stephen,

Not being a DJ, I'm curious what the technical mistakes were on the Jean Carn record?

It is strange when a label assumes that people will swallow anything and never read the labels !!

Pascal Languirand is the son of a well known and very, shall we say, funky philosopher...Jacques Languirand ,a big TV & radio star in Quebec.
I was told that he did in fact dabble in dance music but when he was asked to deliver a follow-up ; he had wandered and tried to push his spacy, trippy music and that would not fit in with the Matra sound !!

Richard Buck very well could be a pseudonym but he stuck with it since I've seen him use R.Buck and also Richard "Micro Fiber" Buck [as he is billed on Nancy Martinez' 1986 album "Not Just the Girl Next Door"].

Apparently Languirand makes a dramatic return on Trans-X's 2003 CD "The Drag-Matic Album".

I never understood the whole Kat Mandu thing...The album was indeed arranged by Denis Lepage [who had done wonders on the France Joli & Freddie James albums] and he did write "The Breaks" - but the rest of the album was a vehicle to push Jimmy Ray as lead vocalist.

Well, I'd read elsewhere on this site that "The Break" was originally intended to be a vocal track (it was the b-side on the original Unidisc 12", wasn't it?).

Technical mistakes? In one of my fave Moroder singles? What do you mean?
