I'll weigh in on the side of the big room. There is nothing like hearing a monster PA abosultely pumping dance music. It makes one think that 'life is something special.'

Erm...explain the difference between a 20K rig in a huge room and a 3-5K rig in a much smaller one, assuming similar speaker set ups.

Sound tends to get lost the further you are away from the source. Hence its only the first 10-15 rows at a festival that jump up and down to the music, maybe a few more in a more confined space.

Big spaces just remind me of so many sheep. baah! baah! Surely they're just an extension of our herd instinct (SAFETY IN NUMBERS/LESS CHANCE OF REJECTION/A NEED TO MELT INTO THE BACKGROUND). Something, some of us (individual types) thoroughly reject.

The only reason a DJ might prefer big rooms is, maybe their oversized ego is suitably massaged?

It's very difficult indeed to picture the strikingly handsome Mr Quinny up there on a club stage, spinning records and getting wild applause from a sea of madly gyrating dancers: GO MAN WHOAAA! A dark tiny little place, right, with naturally very few people and no sheep in attendance.

Well if that isn't the turntable pad calling the mixer black!

I would assume you avoided larger discos because of the tremendous cover charge they placed on your "big" head.

I would rather hang with the sheep than an old goat any day.

Don't let the barnyard gate hit you in the rear on your way out.

It's no wonder you have knee problems.

You spend half your day twisting that leg up so you can put your foot in your mouth.

quinny, the difference between the two technical configurations you mention is that the former, namely, the big room, is going to have a lot more power and force than the latter, that is, the small room. when you've got a truly big system, one that is capable of moving a crowd of 3-5000 people, then there is no comparison; surely you know this.

I would have thought that X 000 bodies would soak up the sound.

My point is this: So far as I'm aware the largest size speaker (that is generally available) is 18". So whether or not you have just a pair or several pairs, each sub is shifting the same amount of air. SFAIK, generally large venues don't have more than 3-5 times the wattage of a small(er) club (whereas you actualy need something in the order of 10 times to double the sound level i.e. 1000 watts is only twice as loud as 100 watts assuming everything else is equal), so why would a large club sound any better than a small one? I accept that once you get to a certain size acoustics tend to sound more like outdoors, but there ain't any clubs that large, are there? Once you try to pump too much sound into a given space, the sound deteriorates dramatically. Maybe most smaller clubs have sytems that are too large for their size and that is why a large room sounds better...although I have never personally found this to be the case?

3-5000 bodies are just too much, IMHO.

My line of thinking tends to compare somewhat with Quinny. I find myself connecting better with the music in the smaller venues whether as a dj or a patron. I suppose a lot of it could come down to one's own personal comfort with large crowds.

We can't kid ourselves and say that the herd mentality doesn't happen in large spaces. Not everyone at these parties are as well tuned to the playlists as the devoted music fan so perhaps I'm a bit bothered by the insincerity of those just caught up in the spectacle. I think of how many times that I've not had a good time in a dance club because I thought the dj's music sucked while everyone around me couldn't care less.

I DO know something about PA systems and I can tell ya that Quinny's last reply was 100% accurate! Couldn't have explained it better myself!

Personally I also prefer smaller venues.
