| Disco was a terrible blight, much like a fungal growth on plants that first sickens, then finally self destructs. Sound familiar? It was thrust upon the public that had only defilement left, thanks to the cocaine and booze-addicted pre-yuppies that worshipped it like a god. Low cut shirts and gold chains, I mean, really. Can anyone honestly deny that it was the absolute bottom of musical and pop culture? Thank God for Supertramp, Aerosmith, and a few other rock and rollers that actually preserved what was good and real about pop. It's making me nauseous right now, just remembering how sickening it was. Thank goodness it only lasted a few years. Thank you.......E.M. Disco Duck? |

| You can't be serious mate. Your post is replete with inaccuracies and contradictions, and I seriously wonder why you would join the forum to post such tripe. Didn't Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler have quite the penchant for cocaine. Wasn't the whole genre that they represented widely known for its widespread use of drugs? You take issue with particular fashion trends in disco; this is rather superficial of you. Shouldn't people be allowed to wear whatever they want? In any case, the rock and pop of which you speak was equally, if not more, oriented around aesthetics and image as much as musical content, whether you like to admit or otherwise. Disco brought a great deal of happiness and fulfillment to a many, and many different people. Therefore, this being the case, one can hardly call it a blight, but rather a colourful and inspiring musical movement. Sure it hasn't displayed the longevity that rock has enjoyed, but that doesn't make it an inferior musical form; it just says something about the cultural structures of society shifting or remaining constant. In sum, your post is wide of the mark and a poor way to start your discomusic.com experience. Open your mind and stop being so shallow. |

It just amazes me that thirty years go by and these guys still live with these venomous thoughts towards a genre of music! I marvel at how time seemingly hasn't changed when I go to the record shows around my area. The albums are virtually the same at every vendor. The vendors themselves are late 40s and up....long, unkept hair or in a ponytail...reeking of alcohol and smoke. Even the conversations haven't changed as I overhead one guy lecturing another on the art of drumming and how no two drummers sound the same. Some of them I actually get along with well as I can relate to their reluctance to change and their distrust of advancing society yada yada...but once I mention that I'm looking for disco, they back away from me like I'm the devil...like I've camouflaged myself and walked into enemy territory. Maybe it was my insecurity but suddenly I had this sensation that all eyes were on me. "You will find none of that hocus pocus disco music in my bins...move along...we don't like your kind around these places sonny." (or maybe it coulda been "honey") However, I did find one vendor who did have a bin of disco! It was all the familiar stuff but as I leafed through the Cerrone and THP albums (mixed with Duran Duran and Soft Cell), there was a moment of comfort and the vendor actually seemed to be accommodating. I did find CJ and Co's Devil Gun and MFSB's Love Is The Message albums to finally add to my collection so all was not lost.
