To me, the mix sounds recent. It doesn't sound like his usual mixes from that time period, unless it was taken from an acetate or damaged tape and they used software to clean it up.

I posted in another thread that in the UK, there were a couple of alternate mixes of Tell Me What You Want, one instrumental that sounds like the single mix, but without vocals (not even backing vocals); and an alternate mix of the vocal version with more echo on the vocals and strings almost mixed out completely. The former was called Jimmy's Theme on the '75 LP it was put on. None of these have the audio quality of the Tom Moulton remix, so his mix definitely was not a compilation of edits of the vocal and instrumental mix put out by Chess/Polydor.

I first became aware of Tom Moultons work when I purchased Lolleatta Holoway's - Love Sensation. It was not until recently I discovered a few more pieces of his excellent work. Gloria Gaynor - Never Can Say Goodbye 12" extended mix. I didn't know there was quite a lot of his work about but has gone completely un-noticed.

Lets hope with todays Dance Music trends and with the revival of Retro with Northern Soul, 70s and 80s Disco that his work will at long last flourish indefinitely.

yes and you maybe right. The version of Jimmy Ruffin - Tell Me What You Want (Extended Version) sounds like a very cleaned up version on the Disco Gold Album compared to the 7" single released on Polydor in 1973/74 over here in UK and the version that found its way on one of the "Rare Disco" CD Albums of around 8 to 10 years ago.

.. I notice thare's a new Tom Moulton remix of "Found a cure" on the upcoming compilation 2 disc CD from Ashford & Simpson called "The Warner Bros Years / Hits, Remixes & Rarities" .. has anyone heard it yet? .. is it any good? .. British dj Richard Searling is spinning the new Joe Claussell remix of "Bourgie bourgie" from this same CD .. I was expecting the worst (I could imagine this delicate tune smothered by house beats) .. but was very impressed .. the Claussell mix is very respectful, leaving the melodic elements unmolested .. besides, a belligerent soul veteran like Searling would never play a house record on his "Soul Source" radio show (God forbid)

Hey what's the story on this release? 2005? Picture sleeve and all, was this the only one they did? What is it? What.....? What.......? :))))))
Were they reissuing Philly Groove singles, or First Choice ones? Is it a reissue or a new issue?

There were only a couple of 12"s released from Philly Groove around that time, both based on The Player by The First Choice. Vol 1 had a long remix, vocal version on one side, instrumental on the other.

You can hear clips of Vol. 1 here:

The Player Vol. 1

You can clearly hear the brass and strings are off beat, which to me is really irritating and distracting. I also found the overall rhythm section mix was flat sounding, compared to the original. Sorry Tom!

Hey Ashley, When you say 7min, do you mean the 10 minute remix, like the clip in the page I linked to? The 7 minute mix is the original LP mix. Disco Funk

In an earlier post someone (maybe ashley) made reference to New York Classics volume 1 which featured a 9 minute version of Devils Gun. I've not seen/heard of New York Classics volume 1.

Anyone tell me a bit more about it please.

thanks

David

.. cheers Disco Funk ..

.. you are perfectly correct .. the original Moulton mix of First Choice "The Player" is indeed 7 minutes long ..
.. it's the 2004 12" Philly Groove release, extended by Tom Moulton beyond 10 minutes, to which I was referring ..

.. I played both versions back to back last night .. and while I love them both, I think the 10 min version comes out on top .. with it's extended breaks, and additional jazzy instrumentation, it sounds like a jam from MFSB ..

I was disappointed that the mixed portion of the CD tantalized us with a previously unreleased alternate mix of Thousand Finger Man by Candido, but didn't include it on the unmixed part!! Too bad Tom didn't include that alternate mix on the Unidisc release of Thousand Finger Man either!

Hmm, I wonder if it's the fab cosmic-sounding long intro mix that they used on Salsoul 30th?

.. the 12 min 28 second extended unreleased 12" Tom Moulton promo mix of "Thousand finger man" is available on the Candido double CD anthology on Suss'd Records, out of the UK:

Candido - The Anthology

.. I own it .. and the track is outstanding, with lots of additional good bits not on the 9 min version .. it also features that extended cosmic intro (good description, Mr Westwood)

Well I can't take the credit, with all the spacy sounds on Disco Trance & COSMIC Flavas, this one could have been on it :)
I should try to find my Candido Anthology then, cause I forgot how the long mix really goes.
