Interesting memories, Q.

I would like to add about the "cheesy" thing (that always existed, with that name or others) that the disco scene in my town were pretty snobby, and to a certain extent I think the dance scene still is. Meaning that the more unaccesible the record, the more appreciated it was. There were a handful of disco stuff released locally in Argentina each year, but as soon as those editions appeared in the stores -which sometimes involved being played on the radio-, the songs were erased from the local disco playlists. (Of course, the Spanish-sung stuff, disposable everywhere, was automatically ignored.)

The pattern was like this: a song started to be played everywhere (the clubs fought each other to have an "exclusive" hit). Word-of-mouth started to run about the track's name and artist (many faces glued to the DJ cabin when the record was spinning). Of course the record wasn't available to buy in a common record store; you had to go to the small "cult" places that sold "imports" (the people behind the counter used to be the DJs themselves) and beg, because with some "exclusives" the guys didn't even want to sell you the record (thus forcing the people to go to the club that played it). Then the record appeared in some store that broke the "ban". So young wannabe DJs like me could buy it and play it at parties (before that you had to conform yourself with some mix tape from the store or, if you had contacts, the DJ cabin itself).

By the time the local labels "got" that this unknown record was an underground hit and released it, months had passed and people was getting tired of it. As soon as the local release was out, and the song announced in radios by some tragically un-hip DJs, the "in" people declared the song "burned" ("se quemó" in Spanish) and if you played again you were the corniest guy in the block... Sad but true.
