Default That's Prince on Stevie Nicks "STAND BACK"

*****

STAND BACK has always been one of my favourite disco songs and
was a TROC biggie .... one that I hope soon emerges at a REMEMBER THE PARTY night ... (hint hint!!)

So when I went to see Stevie Nicks in concert Thursday night I was a little disappointed that it was the very first number she came out on stage to .. ...with no particularly special treatment ..... over and done with before I'd barely gotten my seat warm! ...

I was hoping that it wasn't a "let's get this one out of the way" reason for its early placement. But in reading about it some more --- it seems that Fleetwood Mac always included this song in their later tour dates, so there must be some affection for it . They recognize it as a good number to use to get the crowd moving anyway ... Maybe it was used as the opening song Thursday as a way to make it clear that we were going to have a good time that night. ......

From reading about STAND BACK , I've discovered that Stevie Nicks based this song's sound on LITTLE RED CORVETTE and that it is Prince himself who then came in to provide those synth sounds on it !!!!!!! ...... !!! Is this common knowledge?? I sure never knew that and he never accepted credits ....

I am grateful that STAND BACK got included period ... you never know. The concert went on from there to be awesome ... Stevie has, of course, lots of great material to offer. .... The biggest boogie number was a looong rendition of EDGE OF SEVENTEEN which included some duo drum rallying not unlike T-Connection. Her encores were Led Zeppelin's ROCK AND ROLL and finally BEAUTY AND THE BEAST .

She sounded fantastic and I have to point out she LOOKED GREAT Trim and fit and therefore stunning in her stylized flowing lace and high boots .... making several changes along the way .

So gratifying to see a talent like her, even after a rough road, deciding to take good care of herself.

"I phoned Prince out of the blue, hummed a melody, and he listened," says Nicks of the latter hit's gestation. "I hung up, and he came over within the hour. He listened again, and I said, 'Do you hate it?' He said, 'No,' and walked over to the synthesizers that were set up, was absolutely brilliant for about twenty five minutes, and then left. He was so uncanny, so wild, he spoiled me for every band I've ever had because nobody can exactly re-create - not even with two piano players-what Prince did all by his little self.

So who do you think had the best Prince Cover?

Perhaps Chaka Khan or Tom Jones.... others?

That' surprising to me also about Prince on "Stand Back". I saw Stevie in Austin, TX in the mid 80's and she went back stage after every number. We were all wondering what she was doing and then a few months later she came out and said she was in rehab for her addiction to the COKE. Mystery solved. I would love to see her live again.

Default Re: That's Prince on Stevie Nicks "STAND BACK"

here's the AMG take on the story...

Inspired by a Prince song, "Stand Back" is supposedly based on the power that can be unleashed during a heated argument, but the song's rock-induced hooks and sharp keyboard instantly trivialize Nicks' lyrical intentions.

"Stand Back" became Stevie Nicks' fifth Top 40 single, stemming from her second solo album entitled The Wild Heart, released in 1983. Nicks had a monumental task ahead of her after the release of her stellar debut album, Bella Donna, in 1981, which netted her four Top 40 singles, with two of them climbing into the Top Ten. Prince originally made it into the studio to play keyboards on the first couple of drafts of "Stand Back," but it's Sandy Stewart's work that graces the final product, along with Toto's Steve Lukather on guitar. The song was an excellent choice in introducing The Wild Heart, emitting a marvelous rock & roll power through Nick's emotive vocals and through the depth of the soaring keyboards. Like "Edge of Seventeen," "Stand Back" is rock savvy and forceful, raising the song's stock slightly from a mainstream radio tune to something more expressive. When Fleetwood Mac released The Chain in 1992, a hearty four-CD retrospective of the band, it included a live, previously unreleased version of "Stand Back" with Lindsey Buckingham providing some astonishing guitar work. This rendition, because of Buckingham's guitar prowess and the live atmosphere (where Nicks truly shines), definitely trumps the original. Even so, "Stand Back"'s most familiar version surely deserves its Top Five status and serves as one of Stevie Nicks' best rock songs.

Thanks Marky! To me,there is nothing better than "Tusk"
era Stevie-pissed off, depressed, coked up-she was miserable and writing incredible music.Someone told me
once "Beautiful Child" was about her frustration at not
being able to have children(supposedly)but I laughed out
loud at the vision of you getting reprimanded for not
playing the latest Jolo/Modern Rocketry 12"! Too funny!

I had used "Beautiful Child" on a tape that I gave to several folks who played it religiously after the Troc parties--the morning after...I know that Michael Jackson's "She's Out Of My Life" was either before of after it...and I was recreating some of my tape at Aloha...Keefe asked if it was from Buckingham/Nicks and I told him no.. it was from "Tusk"!!! But I continued down this vein a tad too long and Donald (the owner) told me to "bring back the beat." Play Magda Layna's off-key remake of "When Will I See You Again" YIKES!!!

"they tried to make me play Magda Layna/ I said NO..NO..NO!!!!"

I'm starting to not like AMG ......notice how they never refer to STAND BACK in any way as having been a dance song ... a club song ....( i.e. a "disco" song) and look how many times they cram the word "Rock" in there to describe it . I'm thinking these are the same a-hole writers that bring us Rolling Stone magazine

Anyways ....................... some more about STAND BACK .....from Stevie Nicks herself....

Stand Back is a favorite because its a lot of fun, its a lot of fun and its a dancing song I mean its like even for me its like you know, hearing when it starts out, I almost feel like I 'm hearing it coming out of a club or something, so that's why its so much fun.

I become a different person, and I like that, because usually I make up my OWN characters...but the lady in 'Stand Back' was not my idea. By the way, Prince did come into the studio the night I called him and told him about the song, and he played incredible synthesizer on it...and then he just walked out of my life, and I didn't see him for a long time.
It was extraordinary...

I can't even really tell you what Stand Back is about. Stand Back's kinda about more than one thing. There was a lot going on when Stand Back was written so it kinda pulled together all the things that were happening so it wasn't about one thing. It was written very quickly and I really did hum along to Little Red Corvette. ...and of course, now you can go home and do it too. If you search you will be able to find it. So, it was kinda more built around that whole thing, you know? Stand Back and Dreams are my two favorite songs to perform on stage.
~Stevie Nicks, Jim Ladd Interview, 1998
I'm glad she mentions DREAMS as well ...because I wanted to get down in writing the following comments she made about it at the concert the other night .

She was delightfully chatty and she told us (approximately) :

"I want to tell you some things about the next song I'm about to do, DREAMS (applause) . Usually the way we perform it we go right into it from another song and I never have a break before it to discuss it like this.

Well, Fleetwood Mac spent a year up in Sausalito putting together the
album RUMOURS , going back and forth from LA.. We were getting towards the end of it and all that was left was engineering type stuff . Well I wasn't very helpful in that department so they shooed me away wanting me to just go off and go do something . (mimics being physically shooed) (laughter)
So I'm in a hallway of the Record Plant and (?) comes at me waving something and says, "I have a ke-ey!" and I was like "Ya whatever ... get away from me with your 'I have a key' bit" and he said "NO no no no ... this is a special key to a special studio .... the key to Sly Stone's personal studio."
So then I was interested and he let me in to this studio that was all in red ... red paint ... red bed .... red drapes.
.. So he left me alone in there and I got up on Sly's bed with my little keyboard and I thought
"Now .... what can I do to really piss off Fleetwood Mac
" (wild cheers from the crowd)
And that 's when I sat there and wrote what would become the biggest song on the album ....."

oh remicks...this should make you happier to see the word you seek to see in the AMG review of "Wild At Heart":

Iovine did get a Mac-like sound on "Nightbird," in which Nicks repeated her invocation to "the white winged dove" from Bella Donna's "Edge of Seventeen," and on "Sable on Blond," a "Gypsy" soundalike. His most daring effort was the album's leadoff single, "Stand Back," which boasted a disco tempo.

Thanks Marky !! I did feel better for awhile .....

...I should be happy with that .......
but ....
... using some further scrutiny ... I find even this comment to be weighted . Why is the word "daring " used? (ooooh ... they dared to use:... gasp!... disco!!! ) .

Why instead wasn't a number of other words chosen .... Replace "daring" with words like ...."remarkable" .... " extraordinary" ...."inspired" ...."distinguished" ..."atypical" ...."adventuresome" ....

or how about putting a positive adjective in front of "disco tempo" ....from many options: "vibrant" .... "well-executed".... "crucial" ...."exhilarating " .....

Subtitle .......yes ....

You'll notice the speech was a bit more flowery in the first example when it was being tagged a rock, rock , rock n roll, rock song .....

...... I say .... keep an eye on these guys !!!!
