Default Those Cheesy (Cover) Albums Put Out By Labels

You know what I'm talking about, the ones that sound like they were commissioned by a label to cash in on a current hit. Pickwick was one of those labels that put out 'fake artists' doing covers of hits. The earliest one of these types of albums I have is a cover of the Shaft LP by Soul Mann And The Brothers. I actually bought it again with a different artist listed, thinking it was a different LP, but it turned out to have the exact same cuts!

I was wondering about on particular artist and why they are so collectible? Vast Majority on the D&M label. Were they a group in their own right or just a nameless/faceless studio group used to generate some cash for the label? I have a compilation, which I think is from D&M, and the songs that were on the Move It LP by Vast Majority are on that compilation, but they are credited to different artists! For example, Take It is credited to Black Banana (yeah, I find the name hilarious too).

So which label creations do you guys feel are worth checking out? Should I stay away from everything by Pickwick?

My most recent acquisition was by an artist called 'Soul Patrol' (not a Taylor Hicks/American Idol reference) from the mid 70s. I was hoping cover versions of Theme From SWAT on the LP would make it somewhat worth getting, but it was a waste of money.
