Question: Do you prefer ''Why Can't Live Together'' by Timmy Thomas or Sade?

Do you prefer ''Why Can't Live Together'' by Timmy Thomas (1972, TK Records) or Sade (from de album Diamond Life)?

Although I Love The smooth sounds of Sade.I am going to have to stick with the classic Timmy Thomas Version ..

I remember two other versions of the song that came out in 1982. One was by Kongas and produced by Cerrone. Another version was by Mike Anthony and was flip-out fantastic at 7:15! As I remember Cerrone/Kongas was not as good, and if memory serves me it was the Anthony version which deserves the grand prize. Mike Anthony's rendition was pretty close to the original Thomas version but so much better as it is an extended dance version. I can not believe it but I have either given away or misfiled my Kongas copy.

The Sade version is interesting in places, but I don't get the same amount of Soul and feel from her voice as I do from Timmy's.

Yeah, no wonder, they had to destroy the first pressing coz' it used non authorised samples of the Thomas' original. BITD Mike Anthony was a DJ in Antwerp/Belgium and I met him a lotta times at the USA Import Recordshop. The people who then owned that shop did this production.

I also have the Kongas 12" which is good too. In fact they all are much much better than the Sade rendition IMO.

I am curious if the later pressing that I have, released on Sunnyside records in USA, is much different from the Ariola pressing. This label also released remixes of KC and the Sunshine Band so I suppose they could have gotten license from TK to do the Timmy Thomas "bootleg" tracks also?

Norm,

Sunnyview was part owned by former TK label owner Henry Stone, which is why lots of TK material was reissued/remixed.

I know only the two versions mentioned at the beginning of this post. I like Sade's better, but Timmy's original is important for being -supposedly- the first time a rhythm machine was used in a dance-like song. Don't have the original LP to check, but I suppose that being released in one of the TK Family's Miami labels, Mr. KC must have had something to do with that recording.

Normvork, I can't answer that coz' I never heard it. I know that the second release over here had somewhat weaker vocals (don't ask me why coz' they really are Mike's) and a more artificial sound. If you play 'em side by side you'll immediately pick the 1st take.

BTW, there were more labels that released this track.

Off-topic: Producer José Pascual also did this remix album! Now try to get a copy of this 1 coz' it is awesome!

That's interesting, I didn't know that.

I wonder if my UK copy on "Music Msters" label is the original. this version was released on white vinyl with the same cover sleeve pictured above, apparently by a small outfit advertising themselves right on the label

On the Super Dancing Discomix side it sounds like the used the percussion from "At Midnite" by T connection

the flip side is a shorter version of the same thing, I can't easily tell how long this versions are since the label doesn't indicate.

This Mike Anthony's version was played all over the South Florida area.

I just found my (never played )1982 Promo copy on Sunnyview (Sun 403)both version here are different from my UK copy, Sunnyview's Side A is listed as the "Super Dance version" (7:15) but it sounds like a different recording, not the UK version I posted, Side B is called the "Dream Version" (7:15)more like the 'Dub" version , as the play with the vocals here.

Don't know if this versions are the same as the Ariola release.

The popular version in local clubs was the UK disc's version, that's why I never even bothered peeking into the Sunnyview label's until now

Timmy Thomas, of course. It is a bona-fide soul classic, the highest point of his erratic career. Sade's cover of the song is ok, but it is a "clean" version, too smooth for me. I prefer the "rough" original a billion times. Sade's take on the song is wine; Timmy's original is thick blood.

Ok, but Sade is Sade, so even if the original is better, I gotta take Sade as i just loved her sound
