Default Which country hates Disco most?

Hi everybody.

It would be fair to say that most everybody around this site loves Disco but where I come from it is the love that dare not speak it's name.

Recently I was at a party and one of the people I was talking to (a bit older than me) was telling me about his days playing bass in a band in the mid to late 70's. I innocently asked if he ever got around to any Discos back then and what they were like. He looked horrified. I then said I really liked Disco. He then loudly exclaimed "You like Disco? You like Disco?" and without a word of a lie, in seconds I was surrounded by about 10 people who then started to verbally attack me for saying I liked Disco music. I thought was gonna be a Disco "intervention".

They corraled me into a corner and started haranguing me.They didn't have any reason why I shouldn't like Disco. They were just listing Disco songs they didn't like. I threw them a bit when I said that for many people the BEE GEEs really weren't considered Disco. I then named a few songs and performers they wouldn't have known and that soon took the wind out of their sails. In the end they got confused and moved off. Hatred (the right word) of Disco is a knee-jerk reaction where I am from. According to the vast, vast majority nobody is allowed to like Disco.

I am from the second largest city in Australia.

How are things were you come from?

OMG, Tim, do such losers still exist? I mean, we all know that ridiculous type of human beings that think that they know the truth and that they decide what others have to like!

Are you sure these weren't record company executives that want to brainwash you into a molded customer who likes gangsterrap and guitarbands?

Why didn't you kick the crap out of them? Violence can be very persuasive, you know! That's what I usually do!

Only last week an old schoolmate had the nerve to ask me if I wasn't ashamed for liking that awful stupid Disco BITD. When I told him that I still liked the sound that God personnaly created for us he started a ridiculous speech about REAL music and then he suddenly pronounced a word that I can't stand: alternative!

You know, he's the sort that wears ridiculous designer glasses, carries a bottle of a smart-drink, looks on his plastic watch that has an ozone-meter and brags about health farms but never has seen a cow in real life!

It's the sort that gets an orgasm while listening to Coldplay when normal people usually fall asleep after hearing a few notes from the British valium crew.

This is what I do when I'm confronted with people like that: I ask 'em "hey, do you like Nick Cave?"

Believe me, they always do, it's a guarantee! Then you wack 'em by simply saying: Hey I know Nick Cave, he beats the crap out of people that say something he doesn't like! He's my hero! Mix those words with some Italian curses and you'll be the king of the castle!

And now....back to D.I.S.C.O.

They're the only country that had any kind of uber backlash, weren't they?

Just found a great comment, courtesy of aTypical Joe: a gay New Yorker living in the rural South

"Whenever any of my allegedly liberal music-nerd friends tell me how much they hate disco, I always like to ask, mischievously, “So are you a racist, a homophobe, or both?” Because to wholly dismiss disco as a genre—and whether or not it brings you pleasure to listen to it is another question entirely—is to denigrate what’s possibly the most democratic form of popular music ever conceived...Born of the social and economic devastation of 1970s New York, disco was as much a political statement as punk would later be (maybe even more so), a movement that slashed across boundaries of race, class and sexual orientation. You can hate the trappings of disco (there’s not much good to say about those polyester suits). But to trash it without even attempting to grapple with where it came from and what it means amounts to an insidious form of bigotry."

I would go out on a limb and say probably America.

Don't forget, Disco was born in America, and Disco was killed (the fashion, trend, and type of dance music at the time) in America.

However, what I have found is that many people that hated disco did not have an in-depth knowledge of the music at all. Most of the people that hated disco are now middle aged or old, and as time goes on, you begin to really appreciate life and even things that you disdained or hated in your youth; you find yourself saying, "hey, that wasn't that bad at all."

But overall, you still have those die hard rockers, and others who have no innate or indepth knowledge of disco, still celebrating its death and still hating it until this day. The Europeans may have trashed the name "Disco," but they continued to pump out superb dance music and the majority of modern/contemporary dance music is produced and composed by Europeans.

Long live Disco!

Garry

Hold on now, there's a techno/dance version of one of cold play's songs (name of the song is "clocks" I believe) that is totally awesome! Otherwise, you probably would fall asleep.

Us discoers and dancers can't sit still for long, or listen to any song without that beat!

The ex mayor of New York, Rudolph Guiliani also did his bit by closing down dance clubs, prior to stepping down.

Seems like The USA just ain't meant to party

Disco-haters still & always will exist, just like there will always be homophobes & racists but I feel that they tend to keep their dreadful views to themselves more nowadays in this more liberal, tolerant world. Their own sad little worlds are getting smaller & smaller thankfully.
