Default Intersection between life and disco

Hey all

Just wondering when and how disco music from the 70s and 80s has intersected with something that was going on in your own life. What I mean is: have there been times when the content or message of a disco track has really resonated with something that you've been going through in your life?

I'll provide an example of my own to get the ball rolling. A couple of months ago, I was attempting to win the heart of a young woman who I thought was really amazing, as she was internally and externally beautiful. I was competing for her affection with her boyfriend, who she said was becoming less relevant in her life. She couldn't really decide whether to take a leap of faith with me or whether to remain loyal to her man and see if they couldn't make things better. I hated not knowing how she was feeling and I really, really wanted to know as soon as I could what her decision was.

At the same time as all this was going on I became very well acquainted with the 1982 release by the Peech Boys, "Don't Make Me Wait," on West End Records. The whole message and content of the song really resonated with the social situation I have just described and each seemed to reflect and reinforce the other. Although my courting did not have a happy ending, I still look back on the intersection between it and the song and wonder.

So, has anything like this happened to any of you?

You should 've listened to "Down to love town" by the Originals, I did.

The week of my 45th birthday, I could not stop singing Haven't Stopped Dancing Yet by Gonzalez. It was in my head when I was walking down the street, at work, on the subway.....

And yet, I never pulled out the record to play it.

On my birthday, there was a classic mix show on the radio. I had some friends over and they suggested that I call and give myself a Happy Birthday shout out. So I did.

Now most times, they tape the calls and mix them in with the mix a few minutes later. And that's what happened.

And what song was mixed in with my call? Haven't Stopped Dancing Yet.

Karma? I like to think so.

Totally!

I had a one year love affair with a Manhattan girl who had decided to move to Paris to work in the fashion business, and started working for my company, making her a direct co-worker of mine. She had a (reciprocal) crush on me the second she saw me, and I noticed it. I introduced myself as also an expat (from L.A.), and we became instant friends; lover status kicked in at the end of the week, during our first night out together.
Being that I was the only straight guy among a dozen good-looking women, with most of whom flirtatious manners had developed through my years working there, an issue arose: despite being incredibly attractive, she was also very jealous. And unfortunately, be it at work or going out in the evenings, it seems she saw women hitting on me all the time.
Has anyone else noticed how you (blatantly) become so much more attractive to other women when already busy?....

To make a long story short, one year after we first met, during a breakup we'd had over the usual reason (jealousy), she moved back to New York overnight, unexpectedly, and without giving me prior notice.

3 weeks later, when I started recovering, I went out to get some records, and bought Chic's "Real People" and "Take It Off". These 2 records, especially "Your Love Is Cancelled", "Telling Lies", "I Got Protection", and "I Loved You More", sounded like tracks she could have written for me, to summarize moods she'd been in throughout our story. They were the soundtrack to my life for quite awhile. Anytime I felt down over her, I would listen to them, and feel kinda better....

One day, I recieved a call, and guess who? It was her. She apologized, and tried to explain. Into the conversation, I told her about the Chic records, and how relevant I felt they were at that point. She cried out: "I love those songs!", and told me her older brother was a Chic fan, and had all their releases, which he often played for her when they were kids. And those tracks had also been among her favorites. We both felt there was something special there...

Now, that's history, but these tracks seem forever linked to her...us.

That's really cool. And it does make you wonder...
