Cool Re: 1000 Paradise Garage Classics 1976-1987

[quote=QUINNY;116219]A list is only a valuable tool if it gives you some idea as to the merits of each track....otherwise, it's just a list. Why do the words 'tomato ketchup' mean anything on a shopping list? It's because you know exactly what the words mean and you know you like it with certain foods. quote]

Quinny - I think you are overlooking a quite important fact: you have failed to note the obvious fact that the list is not arbitrary nor random but is, in fact, a list of tunes that a man commonly regarded as the greatest DJ to ever live played at a club commonly regarded as the best ever to exist. This very fact gives the words and numbers strewn across the page a good deal of meaning and a clear indication of their musical merit. I am obviously not taking this to its logical extreme and arguing that because a track is on this list it is sublime but merely that the majority of tracks are going to be of an above average quality. Levan was the man and he played fantastic music. Period.

thanks for the list. for some reason seeing the chicago house, new wave, electronic, and other non classic disco that was popular there is the most interesting part.

the spelling and small typos make it charming and perosnal.

Maybe I'm not so enamoured with the man as you obviously are. Personally, I think his status is way over-hyped. True God or false Omen.....who really knows?

Pleased to see Marc Sadane's 'Exciting' got played; I ordered the Jap CD of the LP the other day & can't wait to hear it for the first time in 25 years! I s'pose I should've expected Larry L. to play it as he seemed to really like the Mtume/Lucas sound (so do I! ).

Certainly interesting to see the music this legendary DJ played. It got me reminiscing to the late 70's when I was going to clubs in the West End of London. Some nights the top DJ's, in the top clubs in London would put together a set that was totally blinding - take you to places in your mind never seen before (and that was before ectasy!) and other nights - total mediocrity, boredom and that you'd have to go and pull a bird. Looking at the 1,000 tunes there are some that, if played with a load of other you could imagine the punters in totally rapture and awe of the DJ, whereas there are examples of tunes that would bore you to death and make you think you've wasted $10 or whatever the entrance fee was.

$10 to get in in london in the late 70s
that was what was great about the north 20pence, 30 pence or do an all nighter for a pound, you were usually up to your knees in water in the toilets but who cared about that! or if you were a real cheapskate you could have gone to sale mecca in manchester ian levines club on a thursday free with the coupon in blues and soul jump the train and you had a free night out [hated spending 2 pence on the platform ticket at the train station though ]

It was different oop North - I guess with your £1 you still had change in the morning for a chip butty sandwich!! Actually BITD it cost between £6 - £10 to get into the West End clubs. Cheaper in the 'burbs.

dd....did they do scampi in the basket and did the top of the club smell of stale chips and vinegar

The best clubs were the newly opened one's where if u got there early enough would let you play the music yourself from the console till the dj arrived...we once had this club off Dale St. to ourselves as no one else turned up ....and this was the night before going on our first holiday abroad .....Happy Days

BTW I am a railguard and nowadays we are trialling satellite tracking tickets that with your ID card and your Mondex (?) will ensure that you are charged directly for any journeys u make ...and your carbon emissions quota will be logged centrally.. to protect the planet from the frivillous activity that you seemed to undertake in your youth....................THINGS ARE BETTER NOWADAYS DON'T U AGREE

yes I agree that this list is not complete, and somewhat incorrect. (not 1 song from Mantus, only 1 from Narada Michael Walden, etc.) But it is a list just the same and I will use it. I was allways told " take things for what they are". and "never get emotional about things you can't change. So keeping that in mind----Use it or don't use it. I love Heinz it's like Tomato Wine

stay low and stay safe all

not Sorry to re-interrupt, but you have two posts that add NOTHING !!

DD, only joking about the railguard job, BUT does foil really workk, I was told it worked on speed cameras years ago
Do U remember the chips and vinegar smell.....Once smelt NEVER forgotten
Found a copy of CHAKACHAS-Jungle Fever -unplayed at a shop back home recently ...£2

For me Larry is a peg to hang your hat onto.....how many here actually remember him?.... how many went to the club that some of the most RESPECTED dj's thought played the music TOO loud...who would like to hear the SAME song played over and over on a night out ????
Larry (RIP) may have been able to work a crowd, or a song, but this BLIND hero worship is a bit psycotic. IMHO
