| Yes R...went to library to check the issues out over here and was quite impressed with the mags...Unfortunately it is an incomplete collection...was impressed that they carried DJ recommendations /hot spins... The UK equivalent was Record Mirror, it contained the UK Top 100 plus the USA Top 20 (BB). Only got started with regular Disco charts in '77 tho'.. Also Blues and Sould mag carried a Soul chart I think..Greg Wilson uses for background info. in his Time Capsules. |

what a significant disco service it would be to produce their disco charts here ....(HINT HINT ) As for the above .........just look that glorious list ... anyone not going to clubs in the summer of 1978 ...would not know at least 80% of those songs ....beyond BOOGIE OOGIE OOGIE , MISS YOU ... and only one cut : LAST DANCE from TGIF ... and some knew of YOU AND I from black radio .... What a wonderful self-built world we created all unto ourselves then *****

| Hi R...I have all of those records I think...I WILL try and do some RW charts for you as I know u are a CHART FREAK I only have odd charts...and it is 200 plus miles and a lot of pennies to photocopy charts...If they had a complete collection I would start a project, but they don't so.... YOU ARE A GOOD GUY WHO CONSTANTLY STRIVES TO FIND NEW ANGLES ON THE CHART AND SHOULD BE COMMENDED FOR YOUR WORK....Marky is INHUMAN... NOBODY works as hard as he on the charts, and he produces such a great read, but the anecdotes and challenges/observations by people like yourself help get things straight Rick James track is one of my faves such a 'bounce' off each other (u know it is Teena Marie dueting yes ?) |

| 1978 really has got to be the year for 'disco' hasn't it? Great list. I seem to remember Ritchie Family's 'American Generation' charting here in early '79. This 'delayed effect' wasn't uncommon; Cocomotion didn't chart in UK 'til '78!

Even then they were a vital vehicle for dj's everywhere to monitor what was breaking... what was hot ... (cue for a story ..... When I worked at Portals ....I was the 45 / 12" buyer. We depended on Billboard to base our ordering. So every Monday morning was Billboard day .... when I spent a good chunk of time just devouring the magazine ....especially the charts .... all of them .... with particular interest in the disco/soul ones (of course ) Even the mailman knew that on Mondays ... we were especially eager for his arrival .... sometimes even going out into the mall to find him if he was taking too long .... It will be forever implanted in my mind how often Tony would come to the store , stick his head through the big glass doors and announce "It's here Gloria , It's here ! " (he was always flirting with Gloria) while waving the day's mail over his head ... Then, as if to make the point of expedited delivery .... he'd underhand toss the mail, banded within the folded Billboard , across the room towards Gloria , who would then shriek from beyond the rows of record bins as she'd have no choice but to receive the bundle in mid air ....... Funny how certain little things remain so etched in our brains ******

| Very cool Remicks! I also enjoy the Discotheque hit parade section that shows what clubs are playing that particular week across the nation. I've got some 1978 november and december issues you can thumb through. I also recall getting a kick out of one the articles commenting on this "Disco fad" maybe staying around for a while. And this was cool too. RCA Ups Price On Disco Discs *RCA Records has raised the list price on its 12-inch disco discs to 3.98, efective October 4. The increase aplies to records on RCA and its custom labels. Record World Nov 4 1978 $1.95

| I discovered RECORD WORLD later in 1981. I bought it every week but the DISCO/DANCE column ran every other week. The chart was there every week though. BRIAN CHIN wrote the column. Funny you should mention it because I kept every one I had and back in early 82 ; they did a revamping of the whole dance chart. They only concentrated on the most played tracks and another one for the ones that were added the most in clubs. When they stopped publishing [shortly after the change occured] ; I switched to BILLBOARD. I loved the format of RECORD WORLD ; from the singles & album reviews on the front page to the great glossy paper ads.

| It's something how the US and UK charts were like night and day throughout the '70s.
