Wow!! Thank you , thank you, thank you for that.

I've been waiting for the Jones girls 12" on CD for ever. I have just ordered from Amazon UK and it's really cheap. Some great other tracks on it as well. I hope the quality is good.

Thanks for the heads up! I think this is one to add to my Philly collection. I take it the quality will be as good as those CD album reissues, which were the same as the Westside versions (did Westside become Demon?).

Unfortunately, this CD compilation isn't complete. Other 12" mixes not on the LPs that could have been put on this CD include:

If You're Gonna Do It - People's Choice (this song was never put on an LP)
What's On Your Mind - Jean Carn (different from LP)
Use Ta Be My Guy, Dance With Me Tonight, Is It Something I Said - MFSB (all extended remixes)

The 12" mix of Archie Bell's 'Glad You Could Make It' was different from the LP mix, but it already appeared on CD. It was on the 3LP on 2CDs Archie Bell CD compilation. The bad thing about that is they omitted the original LP mix from that CD for some reason, and even though its shorter, it does sound different from the 12" mix.

Also, there was a Billy Paul 12" with mixes different from the LP, but those were included on the CD compilation of his albums.

I think they should have also dropped Let's Clean Up The Ghetto and Ain't No Time Fa Nuthin, since they are the same versions as on the LP, and then included the instrumental mix of Rhythm Talk. Otherwise, it's a really great, and comprehensive, set.

Marky: Ya beat me to it.

I dicovered this (and a few more CDs) at the begining of the weekend and was going to post something about it once I received my copy. It looks like it should be a great addition to my CD collection. Can't wait to play a few tracks in earnest.

Marky, thx for posting this. I haven't found it yet but it is on my shopping list. Where else do you get the long versions of all these classics?

"Let's clean up the ghetto": never had the long verz of this! And the Jones Girls and Jocko on CD!

Received my copy yesterday.......and slightly disappointed. Haven't listened in earnest yet, but it would appear that some tracks are lifted from vinyl with the subsequent 'none too crisp' sound quality.

Quite frankly, this CD highlights the fact that PIR didn't really do convincing Disco as such. It would appear that once they'd made the blueprint for it (with TSOP), they either abandoned it, weren't able to do it or weren't interested in doing it if most of the 12"ers assembled on this double CD are anything to go by. I've got my faves on here and definitely, CD 2 is soooo much better than CD1.

'Nights Over Egypt' is 4.40 on the LP isn't it? Is it a different mix?

San, I don't think there ever was a longer version of this beauty. If there is, let me know coz' 4'40 is way too short!

BTW, ever heard Incognito's version?

I always wished there was a longer version too video as this has to be one of my fave tracks of all-time! & yes I have actually got the Incognito version on a Hed Kandi compilation (Nu Cool 3) & I think it's an interesting treatment of the song with their usual jazzy class (it sounds more uptempo than the original ) but nobody could ever improve on the original IMO.
I can still clearly remember the first time I heard it on Radio Luxembourg in very early '82 & feeling like I'd had a spiritual experience!!

Are the mixes remixed, extended, or just repeats of similar passages like a second bridge or interlude that's indentical? I'm on the fence and don't really like 12 inch singles without additional music. Someone fill me in on the Jones Girls, Jean Carne, Teddy Pendergrass, and Jerry Butler cuts! Are there any extended adlibs in the ending choruses?

For the longest time, the Philly 12"s were just the same versions as on the LP. Then I think around '78 they started actually remixing the 12" versions. So anything from that period onward are different, in that they're longer, feature different instrumentation, or are just longer edits of the same mix on the LP (by that, I mean, the LP was shortened from the mix that eventually was put onto 12"). In the case of Ain't No Stoppin Us Now, the LP version is an edited shorter version from the 12" mix (no breakdown section in the LP mix), but the outro with the drummer on the ride cymbal goes for another 20 seconds or so on the LP version, whereas that change in drum pattern is where the 12" fades out. Confused yet?! :)

I have the McFadden and Whitehead 12" of "Ain't no stoppin' us now" but what about "Get down, get funky, get loose", "You're gonna make me love somebody else", "Was that all it was" (which apparently was listed as the wrong version), "Put our heads together" and Butler's "Coolin' out" are the ones I may be interested in. Is there additional vocals or bridges in those or is it just elongated from the same passages?

The reason why I ask is why spend money on something that I don't need. Alot of remixes I'm not really that keen on but these are the ONLY ones I'd buy it for since many are album versions and I'm not crazy about Edwin Birdsong either.

On this cd «Was that all it was» is 6:28 and it's the original 12" version issued in 1979.
