Default ABBA's "MAMA MIA" MOVIE!!!

They are now casting for a film version of the ABBA jukebox musical. One name is already cast--MISS MERYL STREEP as "Donna Sheridan"!!! Tom Hanks & wife Rita Wilson + Benny & Bjorn are listed as executive producers.

I think the Bee Gees need a jukebox musical of their famous tunes to be mounted somewhere and get them back some much needed R-E-S-P-E-C-T.

Yeh, it could be set in Massachusetts & revolve around a Tragedy such as a Mining Disaster in 1941 on the First Of May! The star could get Night Fever worrying about Lonely Days & wondering How Deep Is Your Love but through it all he's Stayin' Alive. Once the fever's gone he's left with Spicks & Specks all over. Emotions would be high as Nathan Lane once again plays More Than A Woman in high Spirits (Having Flown) before being Eaten Alive.
(Yes folks, you are reading the ramblings of a simple mind but I refuse to feel Guilty!)

This sounded like a disaster in the works, but now enters Meryl and she never did bad, so I dunno... Will they make it after all?

Does everyone here consider ABBA a disco band? I am a huge ABBA fan and if you have heard a lot of their stuff outside the albums Voulez Vous and Arrival, it is pretty much pop. Voulez Vous is considered "the disco album" to the fans, but in retrospect, Bjorn and Benny never considered any of their songs as "disco." So what are your opinions: are they pop or disco?

I don't consider ABBA to be a disco group, although some of their songs (such as the aforementioned "Voulez-Vous" and "Dancing Queen" were inspired by disco. The reason whey they are lumped into the disco category is unfortunate; apparently no one has ever listened to "ABBA Gold" or "The Definitive Collection" (released in 2002). Their music payed homage to a lot of genres, but since the mass-majority only think of them in terms of singles, obviously the tag has remained.

Now, I always have a problem with biopics. Be it the life of a star, or the movieversion of a musical.

I don't get enchanted by "Ray", "What's love got to do with it" "The Doors" or the forthcoming one on the life of Mr. Brown. I know these people, I've seen 'em in real life and I don't get the magic when they are played by an actor (no matter how good they are).

I've seen a absolute disaster when some dork was playing Mr. Sinatra and even didn't look like him! You don't touch Mr. Sinatra, period, capice!

I know there are plans of Scorsese doing "Dino" with Tom Hanks playing Dino Crocetti (Dean Martin). Although I'm a devoted Scorsese-fan, I'm afraid that I won't like it!

So, Abba or Bee Gees, their music is fantastic but don't offer me a ticket to go watch those movies.

And no Abba ain't Disco, although some of their stuff can be very well inserted in a Disco set. I've only never understood why some people who consider them Disco always come up with "Dancing Queen". I will never play that one in a Disco set! Never!

ABBA truly became DISCO with the release of 2 remixes:

1) DISCONET'S remix of "LAY ALL YOUR LOVE ON ME" (DJ RAUL)

2) HOT TRACKS' remix of "THE VISITORS"

earlier tracks like "Voulez-Vous" & "Gimme, Gimme, Gimme (A Man After Midnight) & "Summer Night City" also qualify....although they were bigger hits in Europe than in the US....and then there's "Dancing Queen"...a record so perfect Tom Moulton himself declined Atlantic's offer to remix it...a decision he now regrets.

But Tom never ever said that it was a DISCO record! It's a pop song, a very good one, a perfect one, a genuine classic in pop history but it's not a Disco 1, not even in a million years! NOT!

Then why was Atlantic gonna remix and extend it for a 12"???? For the pop radio stations??? for the Country western crowd ??? for the Heavy-Metal dudes?? for Classic Rock heads???

NO.....for the DANCE CLUBS!!!!!

yeah, it's slow ( in the 100-105 bpm range)...but that's the same range as "Stayin' Alive" or "Shame, Shame, Shame" or "Girl You Need A Change Of Mind" or "More, More, More" or any number of other records that seem slow as dance floor records now--but back then--they worked.

OK, here's my bid for Chief of the Truth Police....

DISCO MIX
By Tom Moulton

December 11, 1976 (my birthday, FYI)

NEW YORK—Atlantic has just released “Dancing Queen,” the worldwide hit by Abba. The intro is similar to “Arrivederci Roma,” then goes into a beautiful haunting melody with a subtle rhythm style not unlike the TK sound. The lyrics are about being in the mood to dance. The record is so subtle, but so effective, that it undoubtedly will be the group’s first disco hit. Atlantic is also releasing a 33 1/3 rpm 12-inch single of the record.

Straight from the Maestro's column.

It's a well known fact that on December 11th 1976, Tom was drunk, very drunk

I could never dance on DQ and I never will. For me, it just lacks a beat! Sorry Marky, sorry Tom! Ride it, my posse is hot!

BTW, Tom did a (great) remicks of "Disco Duck"! Now, I almost never see people here mention that one, ain't it Still traumatized by that record?

I ain't....quack quack, tèterètèretère!
