that is a pretty wide sweeping generalization..but IMHO Donna Summer, Van McCoy,Trammps, KC Sunshine band really got the "masses" going out, dancing, buying disco, tuning to disco stations etc. their influence and popularity may have waned , but they were of the originals.

An icon from the disco era is one who paved the way for the hustle.

Van McCoy, The Trammps, Donna Summer and the whole Salsoul Connection are just some of the chosen few who we pay homage to.

Artists (and or groups/self made or a producer's creation) that became an icon or MADE Disco. There are so many ways to approach this question, such as: 1)'made Disco more popular', 2) 'made more songs to chart on the Disco Charts', 3)'had a larger presence in the news', or 4)'was just a fantastic artist/group!'. The only artist that I can think of that really covered these 4 points would be (drum roll please...) Donna Summer! 1).She brought Disco music (and it was extremely well done Disco music) to the masses. 2). Everything she sang in that era charted. 3). She made the news (be it with new LP releases, birth of a child or just being Donna Summer. And finally Number 4, she was and is a fantastic artist!!
