Exactly thirty years ago ..... it's the end of a great year and you've just spent it movin' and groovin' to The Trammps .... The Bee Gees .... Donna Summer ..... Dr. Buzzard .... Diana Ross ..... Silver Convention .... Tavares .... Salsoul Orchestra
..... so many great tunes from so many artists on so many records ....

So then all told ..... what one label out shown all the rest .... who loaded those disco pool cubbies with the most product ... the most hits ....... provided the most music to keep those dance floors full and hoppin' throughout all four seasons of that year ....

When it comes to the sum total of all the disco music played during the glorious disco year 1976 ..........

The Number One disco label for disco year 1976 was :

Was hoping someone would say this one so I will: RCA Records.
What with Vicki Sue Robinson, Dr. Buzzard's, Carol Douglas and countless early 12 inch Disco singles during this period...

Am I right?

Billboard says it was MOTOWN--see the year-end charts I typed--do a search. I'm somewhat sceptical about this--when I finish 1976, I'll have a definitive answer. Philadelphia International was the definitive #1 for 1975, based on my calculations--Billboard didn't do a top label chart for 1975--but they did in 1976 and it was Motown.

The major Motown performers in 1976 would be Diana Ross, The Supremes & The Originals. But I'm wondering if those 3 records combined would beat the enormous point total of Atlantic's The Trammps? All will be revealed --later.

As Bernie noted, RCA could also upset the accepted apple cart cuz Dr. Buzzard & Vicki Sue Robinson will have enormous point totals by the end of the year.

Well we're well used to that !!!

The point for me here is that of all labels --- MOTOWN winds up being disco's biggest label for 1976. !! This despite the fact that when reviewing their disco promotion .... they were consistently their own worst enemy !!
They can't claim ignorance ... afterall they saw the success of disco-ing up Diana Ross and treating LOVE HANGOVER as such, including creating its own 12" version. Why they didn't then do that with so many others .....The Supremes album loaded with dance music ..... David Ruffin .....Stephanie Mills ...Eddie Kendricks ...Temptations ...it boggles the mind. If ONLY Motown had assigned itself an actual Disco Dept. , imagine how they could have dominated the scene .

As it is for 1976 they wind up #1.
Enjoy the glory Motown .... it doesn't last .....

One of my favourite disco records from '76 was always 'Love Machine' by the Miracles. You guys will probably class that track as a '75 track but it charted in the UK in early '76.
