Default Melted record bowls

Just wondering if any members have come across these bowls that some people are making. And have been shocked that they have used a classic 70's or 80's disco album. That would be heart breaking especially if the record was in good condition.

You mean this stuff?

Always a shame, no matter which style of music they are using. There's always the chance somebody's looking for that vinyl. Another disturbing item were the walls they glued 7"'s on. Very posh for some minds but what a waste of good music!

it would not only be heartbreaking but also not very wise considering the album could possibly be valuable by now.

haha, I have one that looks better than those in the pics and it's definitely a real record. Earth Wind and Fire - I Am.

My mom got it for me as a gift. It fits perfect in the studio amongst other music stuff.

A few years back I threw away a beat up copy of Thelma Houston's "Don't Leave Me This Way" in the trash. A few hours later my girlfriend walks in with it shaped as a bowl. She said she used to make them as a kid and when she saw the record in the trash she just had to salvage it. It's been hanging on my wall above my equipment ever since.

Hmmm....perhaps it would have changed the pages of music history had Steve Dahl and his group of deprived, rock 'em-sock'em fans had decided to create a bunch of spiffy salad bowls from all those disco records instead of blowing them up. I know Dolly Parton's Baby I'm Burning would make a lovely fruit bowl!

I remember walking into this used music shop ; they had all the walls covered with black & colored vinyls. After investigating ; I found so many 12inches I would have bought had they been left in the bins...Especially because they were all taken from the 99cents bins.

The girl behind the counter said ; "No no don't worry - we only used those "old disco records" that no one wants...
I've been boycotting the store ever since... !!! LOL
And the worst thing is that they only used the flawless vinyls so that the wall would look shiny and nice...

On the other end ; my sister was walking down the street and saw a window with hundreds of CDs thrown around on the fake snow ; after she told me , I went to see it and discovered a WEA compilation with a much sought after ALMIGHTY mix ; I stepped in and asked one of the clerks if I could have one of the many many CDs ; he went "Sure buddy ; they're worthless !!"

The moral is ; somebody's trash might be somebody else's treasure !!

I have no problem with them provided the records were already scratched up and unplayable! But if it's a rare record, like a 12" from 1975, that would make me cry. :)

Another abuse of records I learned about recently was the treatment of 45s with breaks by hip hop DJs. Back in the day, they used to glue the 7"s to 12"s so they could scratch and cut the 12"s easier. Once in a while there will be a valuable, hard to find 7" on ebay where one side is unplayable because it was glued to another record. It's a shame when both sides of the record are equally good!

A few years ago, one of my friends melted a 12" picture disc of GRACE JONES " SLAVE TO THE RHYTHM" and made it into a clock for his kitchen wall.. After my initial shock I actually thought it looked cool !

I 've seen a BBQ place (don't recall where) with tables/seats embedded with 7" singles under the clear coating.

Here's a new twist on recycling old vinyl records I never saw before:
Drink coasters made from the labels of actual vinyl records.
