'The Sandpiper', the Fire Island nightspot that had its heyday in the 70s has been demolished during the weekend of September 23rd 2006. 'The Sandpiper' holds a special place in the history of Disco music as it's here that Tom Moulton's legendary mix tapes were first heard. A succession of Dj's forged reputations at 'The Sandpiper', ao Howard Merritt, Jimmy Stuard and Robbie Leslie, who worked as a waiter there. Other competitors for a Saturday night out on Fire Island were 'The Ice Palace', 'The Boatel'. I wonder where these famous landmarks are today? Probably parking garages by now or just vanished without a trace? http://www.discomusic.com/clubs-more/889_0_6_0_C/ http://www.discomusic.com/clubs-more/885_0_6_0_C/ |

| Last year I went to NYC & tried to find many of the old classic discos, wondering what they are used as nowadays, but it was quite depressing how many of the actual buildings had been demolished completely. I briefly visited Fire Island & couldn't find any clubs but obviously the Sandpiper building must've still been there & I missed it.

| Quote: Here's a pic from Club RoXY in Amsterdam going up in flames in 1999...it used to be the club I co-founded and where Dutch House Music was born. Sadly, it burned down to the ground the moment a gathering took place after the funeral for my ex-partner Peter Giele. How symbolic?? I will add pics of more happy times at Club Roxy Amsterdam in the database of http://www.discomusic.com soon! Last edited by all*that*glitters*; November 30th, 2006 at 04:44 PM. |
