East L.A. street/Chicano disco from the 70's...? Went to a club and a young guy was spinning odd Mexican flava records that sounded like tracks from the "Boulevard Nights" film soundtrack, sort of in the vein of Joe Bataan and "Hail To The Teeth" by The District of Columbia but rougher. Laso or Charanga 76 they were not, nor LTG Exhange. I know about "Pyramid" and Chicano too but those are not really disco, whereas the sounds being played were very much so. I had a peek and it was mostly totally obsure-looking album tracks but also some 7-inchers. No re-realeses or re-edits, all original pressings, worn out sleeves. The vocals were male and sung in Spanish. Lots of percussion, a bit of strings here and there, chants and some steel guitar (ouch). They said it was "street disco party sounds from 70's Los Angeles, Chicano music". I got excited, the music was hot. Hearing them would not be that surprising had it happened in America but this was Finland. How come some 20 yrs old knows about this stuff, in this country especially? But what would be interesting to know if there is a website dedicated to these records. There must be, how else did the djs get familiar with and get hold of the stuff. Never seen that kind of vinyls in stores. Anybody know something about this genre? |
