Default Esther Phillips/David Matthews 12"

A couple of weeks ago I picked up this 12". I just started playing it today.

Magic's In The Air/Boy, I Really Tied One On by Esther Phillips

and

You Keep Me Hanging On by David Matthews

I know both of these artists from other work but I had never seen or heard this release. It is from 1976 on KUDU Records. And I see they both had lp release.

I love both of these recordings right away. I think there could have been a much stronger vocal for You Keep Me Hanging On. But the arrangement is great and why wouldn't it be?

Both recordings had to to have played well in the clubs. Yes?

Vincent Montana JR. production "Magic's In The Air / Boy I Really Tied One On" medley from the Capricorn Princess LP (it's not a medly on the LP) was huge in Chicago.

and the David Mathews side was played as well

I love "Magic's In The Air" Esther Phillips voice is so wonderfully exotic.

I must admit to finding Esther's voice an acquired taste. She's certainly distinctive.

Both titles chart in the fall of 1976--Esther's is the bigger hit. The "Magic's In The Air" is a cover of a Ronnie Walker tune that's already disco charted --Barry plays it on his station!!!

Boy I Really Tied One On got radio airplay BITD in Minnesota. I have the LP. BIRTOO ran 3:46 and Magic's in the Air ran 2:59. Was the 12" a longer remix?

the 2 songs total running time on the 12" is 7:14, they don't give seperate times for each individual song, "Magic's In The Air" is short, but I think maybe a bit longer than the 2:59 LP mix. 6:05 would be the timing of the 2 LP tracks combined.

Yea, I recorded it into a program and Magic In The Air times in at 2:34, for this medley. That leaves the rest for Boy, I Really Tied One On.

And thank you markydefad for the chart information. I went into the military in the summer of "76 and was in training in Oklahoma and Texas through December. (No disco there. Back in those days, it was Don't Dance/Don't Sing) And then off to Germany.

I missed a lot of releases, but always happy to go back and find them.

FYI, the vocals on the David Matthews version of You Keep Me Hangin' On are credited to Whirlwind, currently charting on the Sept. '76 charts with the wonderful Full Time Thing (Between Dusk & Dawn). I discovered the latter a couple years back and am sure glad I did;it's reissued on a 12" currently available with Touch & Go on the flipside.

Hey Needlefingers:
It still is don't dance, don't sing and to boot don't ask , don't tell...and this is even amongst us civilians!!! Especially if you work in a female dominated field such as where I work you'd be persecuted and it would be a witch hunt!!!
