Hi Danceman,

well, as someone said before on this FORUM "Different strokes for different folks". There's lots of records that I like that some of my friends simply cannot stand, and vice versa. I don't like the string arrangement on Ike's disco classic. About strings on disco records my favorite are the strings from PHILLY SOUL, which sounds more discreet and elegant than 90% of the strings that we hear in some standart disco records from 1975-1979. CHIC strings are good too (with one of two exceptions).

1. The opening swirl of strings in STICK TOGETHER by Minnie Riperton
2 - Any Boris Midney record
3- Summertime by MFSB - I believe I actually levitated during this on many occasions, twirling in the air next to the mirror balls like a dervish
4- Pretty Maid by The Pretty Maid Company
or nearly anything by The Pat Halling String ensemble.

although they only underline this great song and are not as characteristic as in other disco songs I love the violins on Fat Larry's Band's "Act Like You Know"...

Default Violins in a disco song.

If you like violins in a disco song and you haven't heard "Love Insurance" by Front Page (1979) you are really missing something! Also, "Here Come's That Sound Again" by Love Deluxe!

"Funky Town" by Lips Inc. is also a good example of good use of violins. I think Madeline Kane's "Forbidden Love" would take the prize if it were brass...trumpets and trombones...sensational.

Seems we're bringing old topics back again. I haven't noticed this one before so here goes...

Violins (or string sections as I rather would call them) are an integral part of disco. it's hard to find a track from the 70's that do not use them in one way of another.

Best use of strings ever: "It's Extasy When You Lay Down Next To" by Barry White. They have an understated role in this song. Wonderfully arranged and one of my favorite mid-tempo tracks of the decade.

Off the top of my head here are some old skool use of strings I always liked.

"I can't give you anything" The Stylistics
"Spring Rain" Silvetti
"That old black magic" Softones
"Think Before you start" Notations
"Salsa" Louis Ramirez
Oh yes I almost forgot " Theme from the deep" written By John Williams I believe.

For me it's got to be "Begin the Beguine" by Johnny mathis although Shine on Silver Moon is a very close second
