As far as the decorations, lighting is essential. You don't say what country you are in, but in USA Spencer Gifts usually has mirror balls, spotlights, strobes, etc. My new favorite is the U.D.O. (unidentified disco object) which is motorized and spins different colored light beams all over the room and can sit on a table or be ceiling mounted.

Anyhow you must have some flasing lights.

Foil wrapping paper hung on a wall of your "dance floor" like wallpaper also adds some disco spirit. Gold and silver metallic streamers and balloons would be appropriate. If you are skilled with a jigsaw and paint get some plywood and recreate the "man in the moon with cokespoon" from Studio 54. If you live near Seattle you can rent the one I made.

I like the "Studio 45" theme...Brilliant! Look for the Studio 54 logo online and alter it by switching the numbers. You could do that by printing it out on your computer and taking it to a photcopy center and literally cutting and pasting it together as a 45...now you have your cover for the invitaions. Blow it up and you have posters!

If it is to be a costume party (and that is really the only way to have a great disco party) expect to have some guests who just didn't find much disco clothing. Add to the festivities by going out to thrift stores, costume shops and discount stores and buying disco accesories for your guests to add on to their ensembles as they arrive. Afro wigs and sparkly wigs should be on clearance now since Halloween just ended. Anything that glitters or lights up in the way of jewelry is excellent.

On the invitation, you might help your guests dress up by reminding them what people were wearing back then: Bell bottoms, splashy silky shirts, big shoes, hot pants, lots of gaudy jewelry, sequins and glitter, jumpsuits, colorful dresses. And the polyester pants were tight. (maybe not a good idea to remind them about the tight pants...you know what your friends look like.)

Anyway, hope you all have a great time and best wishes from the Disco Party King of Vashon Island.

Hey are we invited??? We too recently celebrated a Disco party for my wifes 45th. A big hit was the Disco cd's we gave away. The black ones that look like 45's. They even had grooves on them. Also a contest on best dressed is fun. Gets the crowd involved and pumped. Have fun!!!!!!!

definitely love the studio 54 idea. if you search through yahoo.com type in studio 54 pictures. besides the logo, they have pictures of flyers and admision tickets you can probably edited. if your having it at a house. you should check out a party rental store and rent a dance floor. a bubble machine is a good prop. metallic stars cutouts are great too. cocktails that were popular in that era would be good. as for prizes i know a great site that has retro tees(i.e. DISCO LADY, DANCING QUEEN, ETC.) I once DJ'ed at a 70's Disco fancy dress party....most the people came as hippies - didn't have a clue Clothing was 'chic' BITD - remember the lines of the song 'Halston, Gucci, Fiorucci', not bloody flares, platform shoes, flowery shirts, etc....
