Default Best From Artist 28 - Sister Sledge

Before I move on to the next artist, my final Jacksons pick is "Shake Your Body Down (To The Ground)."
This week I'll go with Sister Sledge. My big old egotistical self knew they were singing about me when they made my theme song, "He's The Greatest Dancer."
It goes without saying that this song is my favorite from these women.
"Arrogance not conceit, as a man I'm complete." Sing it ladies :D

I have several Sister Sledge records, many of which I've totally forgotten. The most fun I had as a DJ with their stuff was with the remix of Lost In Music. The opening 'We're Lost In Music, We're,we're Lost In Music' was a great little jingle to taunt people with. Is he gonna play that next?
It's strange, they must be about the only band that had 3 relatively successful bites of the cherry.
They were a biggish disco name prior to '78 with several revered 7" singles.
Then they scored fairly big with the Chic produced 12"s and albums of '78 and '79
Then they scored even bigger with the re-releases/re-mixes of the Chic material in '84 (in the UK at least).
How many other acts have done that?

My vote goes for "We're Lost In Music". In addition to still sounding relatively fresh compared to the overexposed "Dancer" and "Family", this song has a special place in my heart. Years ago, I had altered the words to fit a certain department at a company I had worked for... "We're all so useless/caught smoking crack..."

Well, my fave is 'Lost in Music' too; if any of u remember I used this as my previous signature on this site b4 I got an attack of the Dianas!
2nd fave would be 'If You Really Want Me' from the All American Girls LP.
3rd is 'One More Time' from the We Are Family LP.

I love everything this group ever did with the exception of 1985's dreadful 'Frankie'. What was Nile Rodgers on when he wrote this crap?!

Steely: With reference to 'Frankie'. Well said that man!!!! I suspect it's the one track that they get asked to sing at live gigs, don't you?

Although "He's The Greatest Dancer" is a fine track, my fave was "Lost In Music (the story of MY LIFE)....sorta Chic meets Munich Machine...vaguely dark and slightly druggy...a nice departure for these sunny, goody-two-shoed young ladies.

Honorable mentions: "Love Don't You Go Through No Changes On Me" from late 1974 (like a lost Three Degrees record) and the early 1983 poppy "B.Y.O.B. (Bring Your Own BABY)". Nobody played the latter, but I liked it , dammit!!! :P

Easy one for me --- "Love Don't You Go Through No Changes On Me". A favorite for both me and my better half. All else is good, even very, very good, but this... WILD!

Sister Sledge has a quote in the soundtrack of an interesting film called "Coming to America" (1988), the Sister Sledge's song is "Livin' The Good Life" (written by Nile Rodgers & Gardner Cole), in this film James Earl Jones (the king) knocks on the door and Arsenio Hall opens it and he does :o :o :o :o :o , Donna Summer appears in this film.

I love Thinking Of You. I always thought this should have been a single in 1979 then we got it in the UK in 1984 before Lost In Music (which is also excellent).

One I also love is He's Just A Runaway from the All American Girls album (not the Bob Marley tribute version)

Hi everybody,

the best moment in SISTERS SLEDGE's career is WE ARE FAMILY. This song is pure pop perfection: an infectious groove, an amazing, unbelievable hook and, above all, the superb, soulful lead vocal provided by KATHY SLEDGE. The album WE ARE FAMILY is one of the best DISCO albums ever. In my opinion, is probably the best album produced by THE CHIC ORGANIZATION.

Yes, that 1983 LP produced by George Duke got very over-looked which is a shame. 'Smile' is a good track too.

My two all time faves are the aformentioned, "Love Don't You Go Through No Changes," from the Cream of the Crop album and another missed gem, "Mama Never Told Me." Does anyone remember why that one missed?
