Default Best From Artist 26 - Ohio Players

I wanna git a little funky heeyah!
These cats were known for there sexy album covers, sophisticated funk and rumors of a dying girl who's scream was on one of their songs. Yes, it's no other than the "Ohio Players." I go back a forth between "I Want To Be Free" and "Sweet Sticky Thing" in terms of preference. My choice right now is "Sweet Sticky Thing."
By the way, the sax play in this song is awesome too.

ps - I just gave Marky some shit about his edits and sho 'nuff here I'm doing it too.

Hey Paul,

California boys ( OK, transplants) think alike, I guess. I would choose "I Want To Be Free" for a ballad, "Sweet Sticky Thing" for a jazzy morning music track and add "Love Rollercoaster" as my dance pick. I love the "Rollercoaster" break with that great drum and funky guitar. It REALLY makes my feet wanna dance!!! And that's my test.

I never really got into funk/p-funk (Ohio Players, Parliament/Funkadelic) so I'm going to have to stick with the one and 'oh-so-commercial' "Fire". Always loved that ending --- FIRE! (GOT ME BURNING, GOT ME BURNING) --- horns blaring and a little latin percussion seeping through.

Hey Nicky.
I'm not a hardcore funkaphile either. I think I mentioned something about this on a thread about Bootsy/Parliament/Funkadelic. The Ohio Players were a little bit easier on my ears
Hey, did you ever listen to their "Honey" album?

It's funny, I played quite a few Ohio Players toons at the time. I don't know if time has been too kind to them. Their stuff almost sounds too disjointed to really get down to now. I'm racking my memory to remember if they ever caused that much of a buzz. I guess they did, but just haven't travelled that well with me. Perhaps I need to refresh my grey matter and drag out the albums I have.
For me 'Fire' was their best dance track.

No, I haven't heard it. Oddly, there are no Ohio Players albums in my collection. Maybe one day an anthology CD will be in order.

Hey Nicky.
I don't know about a best of from OP. If you come across a Honey album in good shape on the cheap, get it. This brotha knows you're gonna dig it.

Nicky,

I think you would be surprised at the nice amount of mellow/jazzy/ballads that Ohio Players did--real cool stuff like "Heaven Must Be Like This", "I Want To Be Free", "Sweet Sticky Thing" , "Piano Ballad (Just Right)" and the more up-tempo "Who'd She Coo?". This is your kind of music. The funk tracks are good, too. I was never a real P-Funk fanatic--BUT these guys are more to my taste.

I'm sure there is a single Hits CD--BUT I have a double CD on Mercury: "Funk on Fire--The Mercury Anthology". I'd recommend it heartily.

"SKIN TIGHT"!!! This song has an EDGE to it. Besides, there was a dancer I liked to watch who slinked to that song. Or is it slunk?
"Sweet Sticky Thing" is another of my favorites by the Ohio Players.

I did not like "Fire" because I considered it too commercial sounding. Today, it plays well and I like it.

this is what I get for not participating for 2 years... I used to be under the name of just efunk but lost my password...

Ohio Players is my favorite band because they can do it all. Funk & Ballads. In their hey day... they rocked!!! But, completely disappeared after the "Angel" LP... in fact everything after that LP was not even worth listening to in my opinion. My favorite cuts change from time to time... here we go:

Glad To Know You're Mine
Body Vibes
Skin Tight
I Want To Be Free
Sweet Sticky Thing
Angel
Love Rollercoaster
Together
Ecstasy
Only A Child Could Love
Rattlesnake (rare cut)
Who'd She Coo
Far East Mississippi
Fire
