Best saxophone in a disco song

We had best piano, now let's talk abut my favorite instrument - the saxophone!

My all-time favorite is of course "Shame."
What are yours?

"Shame" is an excellent choice - especially the sax solo in between the two percussion breaks - it has a real haunting quality about it! Fantastic, I agree! :grin:

I would like to add two records:

Good instrument choice Lean. I love the sax and I started learning how to play it in jr high school. One day I will complete my training.
OK, I love it in "Shame." I also like it in "Pick Up The Pieces" and "Work To Do" by AWB. There are many more and when I think of 'em, I'll come back to this thread and list them.

In the car at lunch, I played a couple of songs with awesome sax play. The first, "Joyous" from Pleasure. The other and this ought to get you moist if you love saxophones is "Unfinished Business" by "The Backbyrds."

...mmmmhhh there's a great solo of sax in "Oceanliner" by Passport, 1980. It's really not disco but give it a listen, it's great.
Otherwise AWB's "Pick up the pieces" is great, too.

I'll have to add almost any Players Association record but especially the searing sax solo on their rendition of Disco Inferno. Then there's the Brecker Brothers funky stuff from the mid-late '70s.
I also thought the sax on Montana Sextet's 'Heavy Vibes' was just right and of course another fave of mine is Mike T's 'Do It Anyway You Wanna' instrumental side.

The most original sax sound has to be Eddie Harris on 'Get On Down' where he uses either wah wah peddle or some sort of pitch shift that almost makes the sax sound like how Jimi Hendrix might have played it, if you get my drift. The wah wah effect is really pronounced and great on 'Funkaroma'(?) too, from his 'Is It In' LP.

Being a sax player myself I'd have thought I would have made a mental note of all those disco songs with sax in! But alas I haven't.

However, some which come to mind are:

One which I have actually played myself is the solo in Sharon Redd's "Can you handle it" - Cool!

Yes, Brecker Brothers! We used to dance to "Sneakin' Up Behind You" 1975 if I recall right. That cut is hard to find on CD!

A black friend of mine used to test my R & B knowledge and one of the questions she asked me was "Who did 'I Got Work To Do?'"
Of course I immediately answered, "Average White Band." She said "NO, it's the Isley Brothers!" Of course I was stunned - I was SO SURE it was AWB. But when I looked, I could not find that song by them anywhere (this was in 1995). So, what do you think? I know the Isley Brothers did it, but I still can hear the unforgettable AWB voices!

Yep, I'm familiar with The Isley Brothers original "Work To Do." I much prefer AWB's version. It's one of those rare moments for me when the remake is better than the original.

LeanMean: Sneakin Up Behind You was THE best by them IMO. Shame about the sound quality of the 7", which was absolutely awful, although the funk shone through.
