| Last weekend I've been to the Dapto markets looking for records and early format videotapes and plucked a few records here and ther but there was a shitload of a few hundred records in one of the buildings near the show ground. Anyhow digging through them there was a mixture of rock/metal, disco/funk and old farts music from the pre 1950s and going through them I pulled out about 20 records, most of them disco and some rock. Anyhow I've listened to some of them and so far most are great but some were really disappointing. Anyhow I'll get the disappointments out of the way first: Albert Finney - Those Other Men/What Have They Done 1977 7" 45 (Because this was on Motown label I assumed this record was going to be funky but the songs sound soppy like old farts music of the pre 1950s which I found very boring, so I'm dumping this record at the Salvos) La Bionda - (self-titled) 1978 LP (Got the album cover, but what was inside "Bronski Beat", BLOODY OATH The Visitors - Theme From Close Encounters/The Other Side 1978 12" 45 (Unable to listen to this 45 because it is so warped one at one end that when I put the needle on it knocks the whole bloody stylus off the record AARRRRGGGGHHHHH Anyhow that's the disappointments out of the way, now for the good stuff: Love & Kisses - Thank God It's Friday/Donna Summer - Last Dance 12" 45 (Excellent extended mixes of the songs from 'Thank God It's Friday', loved dancing to them.) Souled Out (compilation) LP (This record has great soul and funk classics from the 60's and early 70's) Marcel Pane - Keep On/Little Lonely Lion 1979 12" 45 ('Keep On' is a fantastic guitar scratchin' disco dance track) Bette Midler - Married Men/Bang, You're Dead 1979 12" 33 1/3 (Bette is one of many artists that try out different styles of music over a wide spectrum and she does great disco too, enjoyed this one all the way) O.C. Smith - Long Black Limosine/Little Green Apples 7" 45 (A nice piece of early soul music) Grey & Hanks - Dancin'/How Can You Live Without Love 1978 12" 45 (I LOOOOOOOVVVVEEEE 'Dancin'' , glad to have this 12" in my collection) Geoff Love's Big Disco Sound - Close Encounters Of The Third Kind And Other Disco Galactic Themes 1978 LP (I LOOOOOOOOOOVVVVVEEEE this album    , it's space disco to the max and very funky too, this album is well worth listening to.) Shampoo - Harlem Hustle/Harlem Hustle Part 2 1979 12" 45 ('Harlem Hustle' is FANTASTIC, excellent to dance to.) Love Unlimited - Under The Influence Of Love Unlimited 1974 LP (A nice piece of disco soul) Frankie Crocker & The Heart & Soul Orchestra - (self-titled) 1977 LP (This record is brilliant done by the great disco DJ which you's were talking about a while ago, really sad that he passed away  . Who would ever thought this obscure record would be available in Australia?) Barry White - Let The Music Play 1975 LP (Excellent album with soulful ballads on one side and soulful disco on the other) Suzi Quatro - Can The Can 1973 LP (As you's know I'm also into rock as well as disco and this LP is brilliant, great rock songs and some of my favourites are her big hit 'Can The Can' and 'Primitive Love' which has a supercool rock funky guitar rhythm and drum beat, I might even put this one in my next funk compilation.) Now here's the ones I'm still yet to listen to: Kid Creole & The Coconuts - Fresh Fruit In Foreign Places 1981 LP The Original Score From The Motion Picture "Can't Stop The Music" 1980 LP (produced by Jacques Morali) Viola Wills - Stormy Weather/Stormy Weather (Instrumental) 1982 12" 45 Village People - America/America (Instrumental) 1983 12" 45 Cyclone - Tangerine Dream 1978 LP Mi-Sex - Graffiti Crimes 1979 LP (Australian rock group with a disco hit 'Computer Games') Slade - Coz I Luv You 1971 LP Beach Boys - Good Vibrations (compilation) LP Music From The Movie Thank God It's Friday 1978 LP (This one is not the 3 record Sound Track album) I wonder what I'll find next time I visit the Dapto markets.

TGIF...I am curious as to what songs they included on the single LP....I hated all of the Motown inclusions from the original and I heard that most of the Motown artists (including Ms. Ross)were practically forced into recording those atrocities...I believe it.....(to think that it made the Top 500 here!)....anyway...when you can, please let us know the song listings from TGIF.... Thanks and enjoy what you can !

Why so down on the Motown selections featured on the "TGIF" soundtrack???? I like--REALLY LIKE--all three!!!!! Especially the Miss Ross tune ("Livin', Lovin' Givin") remixed into a Moroder/Summer homage. I kvelled when I first heard this--BTW, the orignal track can be heard on the umpteenth Motown/Ross compilation released last year--NO SYNTHS!!! I LOVED THE SYNTHS--Miss Ross was going Euro--she was MODERN--I hoped it would be a smash--BUT NOOOOOOO!!!! I don't think I ever heard it out--It's real fast--that may have been a problem. OR was it AWFUL as Danceman contends???? I also LOVE Thelma Houston's "Love Masterpiece" --REAL FAST--not really a dancer--BUT a great pop record. It uses a familiar classical melody (who's the composer???) and Thelma belts it out over a super-charged arrangement. The Commodores "Too Hot Ta Trot" is more generic funk--BUT a pretty good song; ironically this was the biggest hit of the 3 Motown tunes. Now--I am also reminded, after pulling out this LP--of one oddity that I have never been able to figure out. The LP lists the BPM's for all the cuts--according to my calculations--ALL of them are wrong--some just a few beats off--others such as "Do You Want The Real Thing" waaaay off--it's listed as 114, but is more like 98!!!! Was the Casablanca beat counter "high" the day he/she compiled the BPM's???? Now, if this compilation came from Megatone or Moby Dick, I'd already have the answer to my question, wouldn't I????!!!!

| Oooopps!!! I'm listening to the Miss Ross track on the "TGIF" soundtrack and --quelle surprise!!!--the synths are NOT on the soundtrack!!! This is the original version, I guess. I never made the distinction before. The version on her "Ross" LP has the Giorgio-inspired remix.

Having said that, I LOVE this album. Maybe it's a "guilty pleasure". Maybe because I first heard it when I was 16, when I was much more impressionable, and it got me totally hooked on electronic music. I still think the production is fascinating, and the (mercifully instrumental) side-long track "Madrigal Meridian" is a total mind trip, no drugs required. This was an album that completely sucked me into another world. After intense listening sessions through headphones, I would re-emerge as if I had been transported elsewhere... which in effect, I had. Okay, enough of my babbling. Listen to it and tell us you think it sucks sweaty footy socks |
