Hi Keefe,

Thanks for the info on Dionne. I got the "Track of The Cat" CD from David Nathan's site. Didn't realize what a big name he was/is in the biz. After pulling the lp today and hearing all that surface noise I thought, a CD would be just the thing.

Christmas is coming early this year.

Hey DanceMan,

Do you remember the name of the DJ at The Alley who was working around the same time I was at The Anvil?

Does anyone here remember another forgotten DISCO album or song by a great rock or soul music star? I remember VICTIM OF LOVE by Elton John (produced by Pete Belotte)
Yes, I have the LP and 12" and "Victim" was good, but the whole album-ehhhh. He had an earlier Disco 12" on Rocket Records in '76 called "Bite your Lip (Get up and Dance)" which was remixed by Tom Moulton. Heavy emphasis on piano and heavily orchestrated to the point were one couldn't make out the instruments-hard to believe it was a Tom Moulton mix.

and a Disco album by Wilson Pickett (can't remember the name of the album right now).
The Wilson Pickett 12" on Atlantic has "She's So Tight" b/w "Funky Situation." It's not really anything to write home about, but it's okay as well.
Hey Bernie,

nice to hear from you! Yes, I remember Elton John's BITE YOUR LIP (GET UP AND DANCE), it's the last track of his 1976 double album BLUE MOVES. The 12 mix is different from the mix of the album?

Bernie, what about LA DIVA, by Aretha and Van McCoy? I'm sure you have this one in your collection.

Peace,

The title isn't doing anything for me (and I looked through my Dionne collection) but there is another cut from 1975: "Take It From Me", first track on the THEN CAME YOU album. This cut went over better at The Gallery then "Then Came You". It even has a 32-beat 4/4 intro. Go figure... Short in time as most songs were, 3:41, but Nicky Siano worked the hell out of it. I can still hear the segue intro "Free Man" at the end.

TURN THIS MOTHERF*&%$R OUT!!

Nicky & DanceMan,

You are BOTH correct. After plowing through all the wrong pages of Billboard Disco charts, I finally found the area where this song is listed--spring, 1975. It charted for about 6 weeks (mid-April - end of May). This must have ben one of those East Coast records cause I think I would have recognized old Dionne had I heard this played out or on the radio....OR maybe I was preocupied with other things?????

Hmmmmm?????

I also see it made #30 on the Billboard R&B chart in May, '75 and surprisingly the next single "Once You Hit The Road" went all the way to #5 on the R&B chart in November of '75. I musta been listening to AM Gold at the time--Captain & Tennille were hot, weren't they????

I did some research. Yes, Rupert Holmes wrote "Who, What, When, Where, Why".

Carol Douglas did it as part of "The Full Bloom Suite" on "Full Bloom" (1978)

Dionne Warwick then did it on her 1979 Arista debut.

Then Manhattan Transfer did a song with the same name on thier "Pastiche" LP. (Is it the same song?)

I don't recall this song...I gotta see if I have it by any of these folks...I must have Carol's.

i'm sure rupert would be pleased to know he is being talked about at a disco site.

as for elton john, "victim of love" is a great but kind of forgotten song, the album was ok. also worth mentioning is the thom bell sessions with "mama can't buy you love", not really disco, but a very dance-soul style.

in an earlier discussion about barbra streisand 12 inch singles, don't think anyone mentioned "emotion", from the album "emotion". for me, the highlights of that album are still the three songs that were produced by maurice white(!) of earth wind and fire.
from barbra's "songbird" album, "love breakdown" could have been a possibility for a 12 inch single.

Nicky, don't you love checking through David Nathan's site to see what kind of imports CDs he's discovered for us to purchase? Very dangerous site since it's easy to spend a small fortune!

Have you checked out his "Soulful Divas" book yet? If you haven't, I think you would love it. I know I did!

Yes, it's lucky I 'wised up' and don't spend my last penny on music like I used to. This guy gets some great imports.

It's funny you mention that book. Everytime I'm on his site I tell myself, go ahead and buy it. And then I don't. Since I know you know what you're talking about, I'll probably get it next time. (Thanks to you, I already pre-ordered Candi, Change and Dionne. )

Some interesting relation between Aretha Franklin and the disco music is the Aretha Franklin's album 'Almighty Fire' from 1978. This album had The Jones Girls on the background vocal, the same The Jones Girls who made a disco classic 'You Gonna Make me Love Somebody Else', 1979.

We shouldn't be so surprised that Rupert Holmes is discussed on a disco site as let's not forget he wrote & produced a full-on 'pure disco' track from 1979 (girly vocals, strings, 4/4 beat, a bit of sleaze, percussive breaks, the full monty!)called 'Do It in The Dark' by Shobizz. I loved this track but it seemed to get lost in the 'great disco stampede of 1979' as far as I could see. Was this played much in NY or SF?

Sorry to digress from the wonderful Ms.Warwick topic. Just to add my bit, my favourite LP by Dionne was the one she did in '82 with Jay Graydon (another of my favourite 'back room boys') featuring duets with Johnny Mathis. Its a very classy affair IMO.(I'm just an old romantic!)

Also, how exciting that Brenda Russell's 'Two Eyes' is on CD soon. This is another classy LP. Thanx 4 that info Keefelc.
I saw Change's 'Miracles' on CD recently in Manchester but the price was extortionate & I've got it on vinyl anyhow but I wouldn't mind paying this kind of price if 'Change of Heart' was on the CD also.

Steely, I loved that CD as well....my fave cut by her in the 80's was her Earth Wind & Fire remake of "Can't Hide Love," from that album and I think she shoulda gone all the way to the top with it.....is this album available on CD, do you know?
