I was never a huge Whitney fan but I think she went downhill alot when she dumped the great Narada Michael walden as producer.

You can't deny that the woman has (or had?) quite a voice. But I think the decline started when she hooked up with that thug Bobby Brown...

Hi Nrg....

I remember voting against this song online about two months ago when they introduced it....she is now totally catering to the hippety hoppity audience and I agree with both Jeff and Steely that she went from Class to Grass after dumping Narada and mating up with her "weird beard" Booby Brown....She was much better off with Robyn who kept her in line in the days when she had a voice that matched her great output.

Before it was released, on one of those online poll links on AOL which said..."click here to hear the forthcoming new tune by Whitney Houston..." and there was a vote with all the various postings, and the consensus at the time was that the song was beneathe her....something like 70 to 30 against.

Whitney Houston is a most interesting case of a DIVA introduced in the mid-'80's by Clive Davis and groomed in the mold of the classy, designer gown wearing Divas of yore (think Miss Ross)...BUT finding herself now in the new millenium era of the Stripper/Porn Star HO as role model (think Lil Kim). So, in an effort to make herself still commercially viable...she goes to the Hip/Hop/Rap world to help her "create" product. Her personal downfall has happened to other artists (think Natalie Cole,... Christ, think Billie Holiday!!!)BUT she seems to have crossed the line into total decline. Her options? Either she goes to Vegas like Celine and plays to her aging fans or she desperately tries to get some "street cred"...NOT a pretty sight for someone of her age and lineage.

It doesn't seem that her image makeover has helped her record sales. The song is not exactly burning up the charts, eh? Whitney, go ask Michael Jackson if his tirade against racism helped his record sales or just made him seem hopelesly pathetic. Some people should just accept that their time at the top is over and continue to grow as artists, without pandering to the "kids".

I AM full of piss and vinegar, today aren't I? Well...mostly piss, I guess. I had a lotta Mike's Hard Lemonade last night!!!

nrg--

"Personal" downfall refers to the crackpipe addiction as opposed to the "Professional" downfall which refers to her declining career.

Maybe a new paragraph was needed???

Billie Holiday as rapper???

"Whatulookinat"?

A badly-aging, drug-addled, washed-up piece of tabloid fodder. Why do you ask?

Actually the Full Intention mix of Whatchulookinat isn't half bad...but I agree that this isn't the song that will put her career back on track.

I watched a very interesting documentary on Whitney Houston this week on British TV. I found it fascinating! I guess you guys in the States will have already seen the programme!

What interested me was her first TV appearance ever at the tender age off 18. She sang a gospel-tinged number and her voice was truly fantastic! She could hasve easily been another Aretha Frankin with a voice like that! What a shame they squeezed all of that gutsy gospel sound out of her voice where they groomed her for commercial stardom ... In terms of SOUL singing she never reached her potential, IMHO, though I gather she has made a buck or two on the commercial side.....

I loved some of Whitney's mid '80s songs, but I have to also say that 'I Will Always Love You' is one of my pet hates. She shouted, rather than sang, that song!
She's had a pretty tortured time of it by all accounts, so I wish her luck.
