Truncated here to three teeny teaser minutes !!! Keef I noticed all these songs here at first are at most five minutes ... some as short as two ... intentional?? Surely so. Does this style continue that way to a degree ??

Remicks, as Eman said earlier, "What's good is good!"

As for the length of songs, well, Jerry was REALLY REALLY excited about the theme of RtP 5 and he had ALOT of music to play for us. I could tell he was getting extremely anxious when we were experiencing the almost 30 minute delay with starting the party (due to the setup problems). So maybe that contributed to him not playing some songs very long.

Sandy, didn't you think Jerry's segue from D Train into Baby Baba Boogie a surprising bridge to throw everybody offguard as he then mixed in EWF? I thought it was pretty cool!

Also, Jerry reedited many of the songs just for RtP 5. Some of the edits were for mixing purposes (extending the intro or exits to make them easier to mix in and out of), while other edits were to make the songs more exciting (without, of course, ruining the integrity of the original song). Of the latter, I think he has an incredible instinct to make the changes for the better. Don't you agree?

Keef,
Guess what? No matter how backwards the place I work at is, and I told you what they are doing. RTP5 has now made it to the cd underground. CD playing is now outlawed and we have to sneak listening to cd's or our IPODs/MP3's. I actually hide my MP3 in my jacket and have only one earbud in my ear...but we warn each other when the B's come by....RTP5 is a hit and the folks that bought it have always brought their copies to work either in CD or downloaded into their MP3/IPOD's. TALK ABOUT STARTING A REVOLUTION HUH!!!

I've not heard this track before either. I was struck by how Rah Band-like it is, It's got that mid 80s moody sound about it. I like it alot.

Sandy, you have a great ear! Never dawned on me the similarities with the Rah Band, but you're right!

It's a holiday weekend here in the U.S., so I finally had a chance to finish up my recap of RtP 5. Thanks for your patience and I hope you enjoyed reading.

Now, I haven’t mentioned yet that the club, especially the dance floor, continued to be crowded, much more comfortable than earlier in the evening, but still A LOT of people. I started wondering how were we going to close the party at 3:30 am, especially when Jerry kept playing more and more of the Troc morning favorites like Ashford & Simpson’s “Bourgie Bourgie” and Roberta Flack’s beautiful “Don’t Make Me Wait Too Long”?

Nobody seemed tired. In fact, the cheers and shouts demonstrated quite the contrary when Luther’s “Never Too Much” moved in after Roberta. Lots of singing along with Luther.

If you ever play “Name That Tune,” be aware that people can name Lou Rawls’s “You’ll Never Find Another Love Like Mine” in three notes! That’s exactly how many it took before a HUGE and prolonged cheer erupted from the room as Jerry surprised us with Lou’s golden classic. Do you even doubt that everybody was singing along again?

Next was Barry White as Jerry continued his tribute to recently passed male soul legends! We later found out, JB’s tribute was unintentional. It seemed like Luther, Lou and Barry guided Jerry to give us the message not to forget their music. Like we ever would!

The boys had their turn with the mid 70s soulful disco hits, now it was time to get back to the ladies. Who better than to start with Candi Staton and her classic “Young Hearts Run Free”? The room filled with shouts of “OOHHHH” as Candi started singing “What’s the sense of sharing this one and only life?” Much more singing along!

I, and lots others, were ecstatic when Jerry gave us a second Melba Moore song. Her wonderful “Standing Right Here” flowed so well into the mix as the crowd clapped along to the opening notes.

One of Trocadero’s favorite Hall and Oates hit followed next, “I Can’t Go For That (No Can Do).” Who knew that this song matched so incredibly well with the opening of Timmy Thomas’s “Why Can’t We Live Together”? The percussions fit together right on top of each other with the cool notes from the organ floating on top. I later asked Jerry for his inspiration about this mix. He mentioned he heard the similarities way back when the Hall and Oates song came out and he immediately started mixing the songs together. He longed for the right opportunity to reintroduce the mix and RtP 5 was the perfect occasion!

The mix out of Timmy into Herb Alpert’s “Rotation” was just as wonderful! The crowd certainly thought so as they started screaming their approval as the mix began. I was caught off guard with the response when the dancers recognized the song. I knew it was a Trocadero favorite but I had forgotten just how much.

Jerry then followed with Claudja Barry’s sexy “Love For The Sake Of Love.” The room was dark and moody as Claudja growled her vocals and JB continued to gently wind down the room. More gentleness with the shuffling notes of Cerrone’s beautiful “Music Of Life.” “Ooooooo, I believe it, the music of life!”

The mirror ball cluster was washed in reds and pinks as Jerry brought the party to it’s end with Grace’s “La Vie En Rose.” As the song ended, the room erupted with loud applause, whistles and shouts of “Jerry! Jerry! Jerry!” Then, they changed to “One more song! One more song!” Jerry couldn’t disappoint and he encored the evening with Change “The Glow of Love”! That’s how we were all feeling as another RtP ended!

Keefe, I have to say it again....the RtP 5 cds are one of my most cherished collections of music. I've fallen in love with so many of the tracks that I had never heard before....True Love Is My Destiny, All Day All Night, Bring On The Love (soooo beautiful!!!!), How High....and the flawless way that Jerry has presented it all, it's absolutely magnificent!

And reading your detailed descriptions of that night just ties it all together for me...a gathering of people who genuinely appreciated the great music of that era and also the determined efforts put forth by the group who put it all together.

Hopefully there's another one this year!

I remember reading a review of 'I Cant Go For That' when it came out in '81 saying that it had a similar 'rhythm box' backing to 'Why Cant We Live Together' so that mix made sense to me. Jerry must've read the same mag!

Or, Sandy, maybe the author of the article first heard Jerry mixing the two songs together, then wrote the article! It's possible! Let's not forget JB was an accomplished DJ even back then spinning at some impressive clubs (eg: Ice Palace on Fire Island)!!

Hey Discokicks, it's a pleasure to read comments like yours. One of the reasons we have the RtP events is to introduce the magic of the Trocadero Transfer to those who didn't get to experience the club in it's heyday. As Marky mentioned in an earlier post, JB has faithfully created (actually I think he's improved) the full arc of the evening at the Troc. Aren't we lucky to have Jerry to bring the musical experience back just a few more times?

Stay tuned for news about RtP 6!!!

Keefie,

When I bought the RtP cd's from Medium Rare, they sent me 2 complimentary compilations.

They were called:

1) Dance Planet 2 (is there #1,3,4,5?)
2) Morning Star Presents The Sandpiper-Fire Island Pines,1970-75

There is some top stuff on them.

Because medium don't have a website/listing...are there any more of these type of cd's available?

Yeh, they sent me 2 Sandpiper compilations with extended mixes of early 70s tracks which I found very interesting as I'm a bit sketchy about the early 70s stuff.

Doh! I missed this thread and didn't realise the set had been released on CD - does anyone know if it is still available or have you heard that it has now sold out completely?

I've followed the track listing and started to dust down some 12" vinyl, but can't even start to tick-off all the tracks contained in the set - so I'd love to get my hands on the CDs - I reckon that if I was lucky to own the set I'd never play another CD or vinyl record from my collection again. Sounds truly awesome and would take me back to 'Sheer Disco Heaven' and my more youthful days.
