Remicks, what are you gonna do if that package under the tree isn't the RtP 5 soundtrack??! Were you a good boy this year??? Well, less than a week away!

Thanks for your encouraging words about more RtPs, but don't you think it's kinda nice to have something special to look forward to every year (or for as long as the RtPs continue?)?

As for Bobby V. possibly pretaping, I wouldn't know and I probably wouldn't care - maybe because I'm not a DJ. I just know that even back in Troc's heyday, my friends and I cared about what songs were being played, what kind of special reedits & mixes were done, and how flawlessly were the sets being mixed? We didn't want harsh "train wrecks" disrupting the flow while we were "lost in the music" on the dancefloor, especially if we had taken our "disco vitamins!" It was all about the party!

As for Jerry, all I know is that, when I was in the booth, I saw him pulling CDs out of the HUGE binder he brought & consulting several pages of notes he had written (yes, I tried to peek but I was unsuccessful! ). He had some really fancy & expensive CD players and he kept putting his headphones on and twisting dials. That's what I saw!

Bingo!!

Sounds like he's sets are well and truly rehersed...'cos that's what I do!!

The notes are to tell him exactly when to start the record in the headphones before he mixes it in to the one playing. eg. Start record 16 beats before break...16 beats after break...on the break etc

It's pretty hard to remember all the rehersed mixes in your heard for a 7hr set!!.

As for taking risks...I meant using 3 turntables, accapellas, sound effects, using bangin instrumentals over the top of songs, slowing pitch down on records to make 'em sleazier, fazing + putting 2 of the same records together one second behind the other etc

Hey Keef and everyone!
Around the San Diego area...well at least in my office...The RTP5 soundtrack is a sure fire hit.....People keep asking where I got it so I tell them....And it's like you said Keef....if they only knew it was a soundtrack to a primarily gay affair...oh yes the irony....

Hope everyone is enjoying the holidays! I found something which topped off my Christmas very nicely - a professional critic's review of the RtP 5 soundtrack! Barry Walters named the RtP 5 set one of his favorites for 2006. You can find his lovely review on his RadioioDisco website at:

So Remicks, did you get the soundtrack???

Finally, I had a chance to write up another chapter of the recap. Sorry, seems like I'm going at a snail's pace.

Ahhhhh, morning music! We would always welcome the gently paced music to give us a chance to wind down to the end of a long night of dancing! The Troc DJs knew this time was where the music should move your heart as well as your feet (if not more so). Jerry continued this tradition so well at RtP 5!

The Philly Sound was a great pool to dip and pull out songs with emotional warmth! Jerry did just that with a nice medley of early Trammps tunes, combining “Penguin At the Big Apple/ Zing! Went The Strings Of My Heart” with the “Trammps Disco Theme”

The next segment was inspired by one of the legendary DJs, Tom Savarese. Some of you might recall the CD set being sold on Ebay of a 1978 New Years Eve set mixed by Tom. Initially, the Ebay seller couldn’t identify about 75 percent of the songs. Well, Barry Walters and Jerry identified the majority of the songs for the guy. We were talking about the 2 or 3 remaining songs when I commented to Jerry how great it was to hear Gloria Jones’s lovely but sad “Bring On The Love.” Jerry told me how much he loved the song and I commented, “You know we did use to hear the song at Troc!”

How cool is it that JB decided it was time for us to hear it at Troc again? Now those of you that have the Tom Savarese set will notice Jerry paid tribute to him by once again preceding Gloria with “I Love The Nightlife.” I was surprised how well these two songs mixed together under JB’s magical touch.

After Gloria’s heart rendering song, Jerry followed with another song that I always thought was filled with heart, Blue Magic’s “Look Me Up.” Notice another song from the Philly studio. Does anybody else think this song has a lonely feel to it? Bobby Viteritti used to surprise us with this song every now and then in the morning at Troc. I was extremely pleased that Jerry continued the tradition!

Next: Jerry’s surprise tributes, even to himself!

But I've been waiting for the right time to just listen straight through (trying to not cheat and race ahead just to hear the mixes !!!

So last night I couldn't sleep so while i did a few emails I put on the headphones and unscrewed the can .

Now remember I couldn'tsleep ... so maybe it wasn't the best circumstances to debut .... but I played the first disc .... and I'll have to admit thinking "it's OK ....." ( expectations very high you understand !!! ) and it was good ... surprisingly BEHIND THE GROOVE really struck me as a standout .... it is a good groove isn't it ....
If there were one song I'd have loved to have been there for from disc one ,it'd have been ....SHOW YOU THE WAY TO GO .....never heard that in a club back then although I played it on my radio program constantly ....

I noticed so far that there are a lot of shorter versions this time around ...maybe intentional at this slower BPM intro ... funny , slower songs seem to need to be likewise shorter .....

Keith Barrow's TURN ME UP ... is the one that caught my somewhat unfamiliar ears' fancy ... Claudja Barry like i think ....

So on to the second disc .... Still strolling along rather nicely for several songs .....Then comes WHISTLE BUMP ... something extra nice about it gets my attention more ... and then the way it shifts into CROWN HEIGHTS AFFAIR ..This is the start of the party for me !! Fantastic segue from it on into HEAVEN MBMAA ....then incredibly THE HUSTLE ... when did anyone last hear that with volume in a club??? Being mixed then into SPRING RAIN no less ! That MUST have thrilled the floor ! Toss in some QUIET VILLAGE and this was quite a set .....

That's as far as I've gotten so far ........

NO matter what you think of the record choices (and for the most part they are terrific!--everyone has their own personal faves ) --the mixes are smooth as silk--like "buttah"--as Barbra might say. It's an amazing way to experience the full arc of an evening at Trocdadero....I was listening to the earlier party (Oct. 2005--RtP#4) last weekend and even though there were a few records I could have done without--the overall effort is STAGGERINGLY GOOD.

Jerry Bonham is one of the surviving DJs who actually spun back in tha day and has continued to do so to this day (amazing!!!)...how he can stand today's crap I can't quite fathom (!!!)--but he knows his stuff and it shows in his record choices and programming and amazing technical skill. If you don't have them you should try to get them--if they can still be bought.

I got it last week (RTP5) & haven't stopped playing it; it's just the mixture of funky/boogie stuff & euro stuff that I'd love to play if I was DJing. I like how some of the tracks are a little different than I'm used to such as Quiet Village & Get Happy (re-edits or special promo versions perhaps?) & the mix from Zulu into The Natives Are Restless is so inspired. & so is the one form Hall & Oates into Timmy Thomas! Fabulous. One of the few mixes I'm not keen on is D-Train into Baby Baba Boogie - the latter being slowed down too much for my taste. But that's probably the only quibble. Oh & I prefer Boystown Gang's version of Disco Kicks. Overall it's excellent & would loved to have been there on the night.

You make a great point . This is the full arc of an evening being presented here .... so I shouldn't be surprised if the first CD strikes me as being a bit introductory. The first disc is that period when people are filtering in to the club checking out who's already there and what it is they shouldn't be wearing . A DJ working his butt off then would be like a premature ejaculation ....totally out of sync with the rhythm of the evening ... one has to build into these things in a pleasingly teasingly way... it's all part of the dance that's involved in .... the dance.... By about midway of disc two .... is where I feel this shift accuring ... Jerry is figuring folks have had time to check in their coats .... say their hellos , maybe down their first drink(s) and is trying a bit harder to get the crowd's attention .....
BUT I sense that the full on party is really yet to happen ..... I can't wait to play on !! ..............

Jeff told me the party took off with "BOOGIE OOGIE OOGIE"

"Please Mr. DJ, play us something we know--something we heard on the radio, perhaps???"

The "arc of the evening" is always truncated at the "morning music" section, however. They always run out of time.

"TIME--all we need is just a little more TIME!!!"

Usually we get one cd of that before they pull the plug on the party.

Actually Remicks & Mark, I was going to say Remicks instinctively caught when the party jumped in intensity. The "wind up" set had more people than ever before (and lots of songs I love were played!). However, we noticed the dance floor started getting crowded during "Boogie Oogie Oogie." However, I was pretty surprised to noticed during "Whistle Bump" that the floor was absolutely packed. I don't know if the floor was crowded because everybody just started arriving to the club at that time or if everybody was just excited to hear the songs in this set - probably a combination of both.

Then again, you might recall that many months before RtP 5, Jerry tested a bit of his planned playlist on us at a birthday party at The Stud! I remember he surprised us with Whistle Bump, Crown Heights, Spring Rain and Quiet Village and even then we were cheering away. So, I shouldn't have been surprised at the grand reaction at RtP 5!
