Woah! Well Eman, if you couldn't be at RtP 5 in San Francisco, you created your own mini-RtP at the Base. Hope that DJ brought some lighting equipment! All for the cost of dinner - I say not a bad deal!

After finishing Disc 7 yesterday(one of the best of the set) I can honestly assure Quinny that Jerry is the real deal because of one simple fact-instinct.As someone posted earlier, you can mix the Bee Gees and Donna Summer and get a strong response(only an example-don't flame me!) but to mix a more traditional "downtempo" soul set and make it work is because of an understanding and love of the music. This comes from years of seasoning and marinating,if you will.Listen to the segue from Hall and Oates "I Can't Go" into Timmy Thomas-it's breathtaking and mindboggling.Years ago, after listening to some CD's that I purchased from Robbie Leslie,I sent him an email: Dear Robbie-Somewhere,sometime in the future they will find a time capsule on the moon labeled "perfect disco mixing" and inside will be your mix of Theresa's "Old Time Melody" into Womack and Womacks "Baby,I'm Scared Of You". And now I can insert Jerry's Timmy Thomas mix too.I can't give any higher compliment than that. Thom

Keef...nah he didn't bring any lighting...LOL...Anyway it was fun...just to give the DJ props he brought some of the current stuff...like Pussycat Dolls, Usher..Nelly Furtado...the younger ones danced to that...but it was the RTP5 music that brought the house down...Oh I told some of my friends at work that they could order the set at Medium Rare Records in SF... Keef...you should have seen my bosses who I call the B***CH's of Eastwick dancing...talk about geriatric disco bunnies....one was so drunk she started sticking dollar bills down some of the male guests shirts and was trying to get them to dance with her....hmmm a friend got this all on video...I should tell him to circulate it on YOUTUBE lol.....but you know us gay guys...we have hearts of gold and wouldn't stoop that low...even if we are discriminated against...you know it's the Don't Ask, Don't Tell but they can tell ya know...LOL

Somebody at the store must have made a mistake, Medium Rare Music still has the set available! However, I wouldn't wait too much longer if you're interested in a copy. Now at long last, here's another chapter in my recap of the RtP 5 event! Although it was way past midnight, Jerry had us “Leaving On A Midnight Train” with Nick Straker. Then one more tune, Viola Wills’s classic version of “Stormy Weather,” before we started heading into the hotly anticipated morning music portion of the Party! I’m not sure what I was doing or where I was (probably yakking away), but I was told when Viola started warbling, one drag queen started screaming and carrying on! Not just screaming with excitement because her favorite song was playing, but screaming to the point that the producers were wondering if she was alright. Oh my! Next, Jerry played his ode to love set beginning with the rare remix of “The Man I Love” I talked about earlier in this thread. A couple of couples, including our producers, started dancing cheek to cheek. Isn’t that sweet? Robbie Leslie would be proud to know his reedit of Jimmy Ruffin’s “Hold On To My Love,” the third song of Jerry’s love trilogy, continued to pack the floor and elicited whoops of delight. (Speaking of Robbie, if you're in the Los Angeles area on Sunday, January 14th, 2007, he and Michael Fierman will be bringing you "One Night Only - A Night of Classics" from 9 pm to 6 am. The party is at the Avalon Hollywood and it's a benefit for the Natl. Gay & Lesbian Taskforce. Robbie told us he'll continue the RtP tradition of spinning the disco classics from the 70s to the early 80s!) Back in Troc’s heyday, it was common practice for us to spend Saturday night and Sunday morning dancing at the club. For most of us, that wasn’t a problem. However, we had one friend who’s mother would lay a heavy guilt trip on her if she missed going to church on Sunday! Bad girl! As the song faded to it’s end, the crowd roared their approval, and Jerry responded by moving us fully into morning music with the gentle and lovely opening strings of Webster Lewis’s “Welcome Aboard” (please note the correct artist listing on the playlist should be Love Unlimited Orchestra Presents Webster Lewis rather than vice versa). Now, Jerry told us he was extremely nervous he was going to clear the dancefloor because he thought this song was too obscure. Nope! People remembered and they cheered! At this point of the evening, we had complete confidence in Jerry to bring back the joy we experienced at Troc. We waited a whole YEAR so we could relive the magic of the Trocadero! We wanted to hear our favorite disco songs from those days. We wanted smooth mixes from one song to another so we could continue to glide across the dance floor. We wanted special edits and remixes to keep us interested and motivated to dance. We waited a long time and we wanted a perfect and memorable evening! We DIDN’T CARE how Jerry was able to accomplish all that, we just cared that he gave us a near perfect evening that we would remember for a long time (or at least until the next RtP!). NEXT: More loveliness!

Happy Holidays, everybody! Here's a nice early present for you! If you head over to the www.remembertheparty.com website (after you're finished here) and go to the section with the pictures of RtP 5, you'll find two video clips from the evening. The first clip is during "Stomp" and the second is from earlier in the evening when Jerry played "Boogie Oogie Oogie." Can you hear everybody singing along?

When I saw the playlist and saw the titles Spring Rain and Quiet Village I though oh my, must have been something to dance through those - too bad about that Tempest Trio tune in between though, an otherwise brilliant record that is ruined by a horrible screeching female voice. But behold, that nasty wailing is no longer there in the edit present in Jerry's set! So, absolute total perfection! |

Got my cd's on Friday and there is no doubt Jerry's mixing is close to perfection as you can get. He reminds me of me in the way I mix!! When it comes to mixing...I am a perfectionist...it sometimes takes me 15-20 to get a mix perfect before I move on to the next one. I feel this is the ONLY way Jerry would get his mixes perfect the way he has...Sasha is well rehearsed too!! The mixing gets in to top gear from cd 2...when he cuts it into "Lady bump"...from there ,it's faultless. I would have like to see him take few more risks like Bobby V. I give him: 9.5/10 for Mixing & 10/10 Progamming Top Stuff!

Whistler, TDK is correct? Did you perhaps purchase the soundtrack from the first Remember the Party, which was helmed by DJ Robbie Leslie, rather than the soundtrack from Remember the Party 5? Of all of the 5 parties, I only remember Robbie playing Lady Bump, and that's on the first disc of that soundtrack. You can find a list of the songs played at RtP 5 at the beginning of this thread. Could it be you were thinking of a different song? Jussi, there were a couple of moments during the RtP 5 that would be so emotional. It's hard to explain but just the right gentleness of a song, the perfect color of lights in the room and the overwhelming joy coming from the dancefloor could be sooooo moving. I thought it was just me being too sappy! So, it's nice to know you got a little sense of the feeling by listening to the soundtrack!!

Thanks for clearing up the mystery, Whistler! Also, can you please give us a little more info as to what kind of "risks" you would have liked to have heard in the program? Please remember that the RtPs are special infrequent events. Since they don't happen all the time, we've tried to explore different sides of the Trocadero at each party. At the same time, Jerry wants to play sets that will keep people happy on the dancefloor. Since each RtP is also a benefit, we want to be sure people come back for our future events. So, there are limits as to how much experimentation he can do during the evening. Actually, if you think about it, the biggest "risk" taken has been by the producers for the RtPs. As I've said before, we always wonder if there will be sufficient interest and support for each party. So far, so good!

Isn't that amazing ...worrying about the turnout . I honestly think Keefelc , if you all would amp up the frequency of these events .... you'd have no trouble garnering plenty of support... the old line down the sidewalk to get in at The Troc !! Keep that momentum going I want to clarify my own earlier post .... while I loved the actual disco days when the music was a blend of hits/ non-hits of the past/ present and future .... that type of experience was exclusive to the time . Now what I'd want is exactly what Jerry is providing .... a masterful weaving of various songs selected from the entirety of the disco era . That was something never done back in the day ....when the focus was on what was hottest on that very given night ....So it is very thrilling to hear these various tunes from varoius times successfully played into each other this way . Having said that though ....I've heard rumours that much of Bobby's awesome mixes back then were pretaped ... and that has always bothered me . Not just special edits .... but the actual mixing between songs themselves . I think that's kind of dishonest to stand up there and pretend to be DJing live .... So I do hope that Jerry is not doing that ... even if it were in the Troc tradition ..... Thanks for your excellent review so far of the night's progression ..... ...Can't wait to hear my own set from this latest party .... which awaits me under the Christmas tree where my other half has clearly written on it "DO NOT OPEN BEFORE CHRISTMAS ! " *****
