So What's the Good New Stuff?????

Occasionally, some of the younger members mention new club songs that are bringing back the Disco sound of the old days. Disco Savvy, an occasional contributor here, has mentioned some titles in the past.

Those of us who no longer go to clubs have no way to hear this stuff--SOOOO I'm proposing that those in the know--let us know the titles of recent/current dance tunes that the old crowd might appreciate--IF we had a way to hear them.

AND, just as important as titles, WHERE is the BEST version obtained? I've given up on buying CD singles cause they just SUCK--so if there's a certain mix to be preferred over others or the original CD version is best--that info would be most helpful.

I always suspect I'm missing out on good stuff--BUT, I've been burned so many times in the past, that I'm really reluctant to experiment anymore.

C'mon KIDZ, help the "Old Farts" find new tunes!!!!! :lol:

My 3 favorites:
"Murder on the Dancefloor" by Sophie Ellis Bextor (2001) - excellent
"Should I Let Him Go?" by The Company (2000) - excellent
"Cosmic Girl" by Jamiroquai (1996) - great

Worth listening to:
"Never Been Kissed" by Kristine W. (2000) - great
"I Don't Understand It" by Ultra Nate (2001) - great
"Canned Heat" by Jamiroquai (1999) - good
"Love Foolosophy" by Jamiroquai (2001) - great but a little too poppish
"Main Vein" by Jamiroquai (2001) - great
"You Give Me Something" by Jamiroquai (2001) - good but sounds like an imitation
"Ooh, C'mon" by The Company (2002) - great but lacks the string section
"They Dance!" by Barry Manilow (2001) - good if you don't mind the Travolta SNF reference
"Straight Ahead" by Fused (2001) - good mix of strings and electronics, and isn't like other songs
"Never Give Up On the Good Times" by the Spice Girls (1997) - great optimistic track
"I Love the Night Life" by India with NuYorican Soul (1998) - pretty good copycat

Not worth listening to:
"Take Me Home" by Sophie Ellis Bextor (2001) - not as good as the original Cher version
"You Turned My World Around" by The Company (2000) - nice strings but a little dull
"Little L" by Jamiroquai (2001) - good but can get boring after repeated listening
"Sexual Guarantee" by Alcazar (2001) - good but stick with "My Forbidden Lover"
"Anticipating" by Britney Spears (2001) - too much teen-pop-ish I suppose
"It Feels Good" by Team Factor featuring Kenny Bobien (2002) - fair
"When I Get You Alone" by Robin Thicke (2002) - good but not an original score
"Idiot Boyfriend" by Jimmy Fallon (2002) - this is meant to be a parody of Michael Jackson's "Off the Wall" album and Leo Sayer's "You Make Me Feel Like Dancing"
"Hey, Goldmember" by Beyonce Knowles (2002) - not original, skip it
"Never Let It Go" by Afro-dite (2002) - trite and too electronic
"Turn the Beat Around" by Gloria Estefan (1994) - copycat and not as good as the original
"Ain't No Stoppin' Us Now" by Luther Vandross (1994) - copycat
"Who Do You Think You Are" by the Spice Girls (1996) - so what
"Let's Go Round Again" by Louise Nurding (1997) - good song but her voice is weak
"Outside" by George Michael (1998) - just OK
"Bag It Up" by Geri Halliwell (1999) - this song is a joke
"It's A Disco Night" by Pascal and Mister Day (1998) - this song bores me
"Strong Enough" by Cher (1998) - sounds good but lyrics are too much like "I Will Survive"

Hey Mark, I got my "The Company" CD new for just $4.00 and it's not a single, it's an entire album! I don't recommend the Ultra Nate 2001 album because it's inconsistent. Sophie's and Jamiroquai's materials are available as singles.

I would have had a radio station with all of these new disco songs, except for the absurd DMCA and Library of Congress regulations which killed affordable webcasting. Someday I might invest in a CD and vinyl compilation project for the best of the new disco tracks, licensed and with full liner notes.

Marky, I can't think of any new "disco type" songs. I'm pretty sure there are a few songs out there but I don't go to clubs that play todays music. If I do, its once in a blue moon and when I did go, all of the songs sound the same (sampling or techno/trance).

The last two songs that comes close to disco is Kylie's "Can't Get You Out Of My Head" and my favorite "Love Fool" by The Cardigans.

Now, I'd like to check out Sophie Ellis Bextor: Allmusic only rates her CD as a 2-star affair and the "Murder on the Dancefloor" cut is only 3:51. So, my question is should I buy the CD of remixes--or just the original CD????

I also have to get the last Jamiroquai CD--I have all their earlier stuff. I like them--BUT, I've never used one of their songs on a tape. Is this CD much different than the others???

I think a safe way to get a lot of the best new dance music around is to get the latest Hed Kandi compilations. Hed Kandi is a UK label that specializes in disco/house etc.
The Disco Kandi series is cool and so is the Disco Heaven 02.02 and the Beach Kandi series.
I'm an all-timer myself but I like a lot of the new garage/house stuff that comes out. Sophie Ellis Bextor etc is too popish for my tastes but here are some of the best tunes I heard so far this year:
Shakedown - At Night (the original and Kid Creme mixes)
Angie Stone - Wish I didn't Miss You (Pound Boys remix)
Me'shell Ndegeocello - Earth (Ben Watt Lazy Dog remix)
Brandy - Full Moon (Full Intention remix)

These are relatively easy to find but I also recommend many releases from independent dance labels like King St. - Subliminal - Soulfuric/Defected etc.

'I Cant Get Enough' by Soul Searcher has got to be one of the best records of recent years & its featured in its best mix on 'Disco Kandi' double CD. It samples an old Garys Gang track but it isnt overly evident. Classy track!

Marky: Maybe it's just me, but this 'old fart' absolutely hates 'Sophie Ellis Baxter - Murder on the Dancefloor'. The woman can't sing for toffee and the whole thing is sooooo lame, really. However the Spiller track Groove Jet, she did a few years back was so much better. A really hypnotic dance groove.
There again I don't like Jamiroquai 'cos I think they sound soooo contrived and the guy's really false funk scat style of singing really bugs me out of existence. Lame or what?

Marky, How far back do you want to go? Trouble is, I only ever hear the radio crossover stuff.

Checkout "Played A Live" by Safri Duo, it's a huge club hit. Also checkout "I Am What I Am" by Karen Mulder. This cover of one of Gloria's greatest song lacks Gloria's voice but it's very reccommended.

Mmmmm let me think more..... "Time After Time" by Novaspace and also "Hard To Say I'm Sorry" by Aquagen. Check "Asereje" by Las Ketchup, "Lady" by Modjo, "Sandstorm" by Darude.

Hi Mark. While I like some of the new disco songs, some are clearly designed for a pop audience and aren't more than radio-length in their original mixes, but I can deal with that. For instance "Murder on the Dancefloor" clocks in at 3:51 (compared to 7:28 for "Groovejet"). "They Dance!" is only 3:00. But some are more than 5 minutes... for instance: "Straight Ahead" is 5:01. "Canned Heat" is 5:30, "Should I Let Him Go?" is 5:54, "I Don't Understand It" is 6:56. The remixes of "Murder on the Dancefloor" are not so great. As for your question on Jamiroquai, their previous albums had a broader mix of acid-jazz, funk, disco, and experimental stuff, but their last album was more heavily disco-oriented (with some exceptions). Cher's latest material is OK but none of it is old-style disco. And I think Kylie's "Can't Get You Out Of My Head" is irritating! I prefer her other single, "Love at First Sight". Another song I found irritating was teen-pop group S Club 7's attempt at disco, "Don't Stop Movin'".

I appreciate hearing about the other new songs that were posted here. I'll try to check those out sometime, but it might be a challenge. I haven't heard anything from artists like Joe Claussel, Louis Benedetti, Donna Allen, Aquagen, and Sessomato.

Let me fill you in on some of the new stuff I have been listening to - mostly picked up via the radio.

There are two blinding disco tunes that are around at the moment that I have heard on the Robbie Vincent Sunday Show. FYI, Robbie was one of the top soul Dj's in the 70's Soul Mafia movement ...

BLAZE - Gloria Muse - funky garage/disco beat (real bass) overlaid with a tinkling jazzy piano lead all throught the record - STUNNING! Think the CD is out in 2weeks' time...

YUKAHERO FUKOTOMI - Love Each Other - cheesy disco sound for 2002! real song, real vocals, real instruments!! Out on 12-inch I believe.. Love it!

My favourite soul LP at present is CORNELL STONE and I love especially "She's So Beautiful".

One for Blax!! PHILIP BAILEY ex-EWF with his excelleny jazzy new LP. I have heard "Some Time Ago" from the radio.. Love it!! :grin:

Other recent stuff from 2002 that I love:

ANGELA JOHNSON - great soul LP eg They Don't Know

DENNIS TAYLOR cd - his track Steppin' has it all! A real traditional powerful bass line with a great catchy song on top. Soulful vocals. Essential modern soul/funk in the traditional vein!! :grin:

KOOP/TERRY CALLIER - "In A Heartbeat" Swedish group teams up with legendary soul singer. Very interesting tune - a bit leftfield but I am hooked!!! Has been doing the rounds for a few months now. Love it!

D-INFLUENCE have made a CD with covers of old soul stuff including a decent version of "Taste Of Bitter Love"

LENA CONQUEST - The Breeze. Nice mid tempo jazz offering feat ROY AYERS 'Nuff said!! :grin:

WILL DOWNING's new CD. I am going with "Don't Talk To ME Like That" Excellent jazz/soul stuff.

ST JERMAINE - A lot of people have been talking about this them. Sort of left field jazz / garage stuff. Rose Rouge is a stunner!
Also Pont des Arre is worth checking out!

JESTER FUNK - For Your Precious Love. Nice garage dancer. And the bass line sounds familiar? It's "Cocomotion" at a slower pace!! Though apparently no credits for El Coco are mentioned on the record...

VANESSA BELL ARMSTRONG - Make A Way. Excellent soul on the gospel side.

NATURAL HIGH - Dream Sequence. Traditional jazz / funk number with catchy tune. Brilliant! Definitely for the JP's!!

Of course there is ANGIE STONE's CD

Other disco artistes with new CDs' - in the smooth jazz style - PAUL HARDCASTLE with a re-working of Rain Forest - Hmm . Bit too smooth for me ... and JOE SAMPLE with HOWARD Whats-his-name ex-Shalamar..Heard a nice track from that CD. There a still a few legal hiccups delaying the new long-awaited TEENA MARIE CD, so I gather. Thought I heard a whisper about a new RICK JAMES CD on his web site at some point in the near future ....


And don;t forget those HED KANDI compilations. HED KANDI DISCO, DISCO HEAVEN and STEREO SUSHI compilations are the main uptempo ones ....

My faves from 2001:

First was a 1999 reissue - BARRY WHITE. Got a 2001 release in the UK. Tracks like "Which Way Is Up" - Wow!! Barry still proves he is THE MAIN MAN!! AWESOME! AWESOME! AWESOME! :grin:

DIONNE WARWICK/SPINNERS - Don't Need Another Love. Keep plugging this one. Awesome summer uptempo soul dancer. Glorious!! :grin: Got it on double 12" promo!! :grin:

O'JAYS - fantastic CD. I loved the slow jam, "I Don't Know" amongst other tracks ....

And finally, THE MAIN INGREDIENT's 2001 soul CD with a great dancer "Won't Let You Do That" Easily as good as "Evening Of Love" etc...

That is, French DJ Ludovic Navarre, aka St Germain. The CD is called "Tourist" and it's excellent. He's also the producer of Llorca.

Must be Jestofunk, an Italian funk band as far as I know. Good stuff.

Also think Barry White's "Staying power" is very good. And it came out on new-agey Windham Hill because no other label was interested! Incredible...

I think DJ music has a better vibe right now than those new R&B artists trying to sound like the 70's. Groove Armada, Fatboy Slim, Mirwais, Alex Gopher's "The child"... nice modern dance music for me.
