Finds in NYC

You know you're a serious music junkie when you go on your first trip anywhere, and all you care about is what groovy records you can get....



Anyway, I didn't have much time to myself, so I could only check a few shops. I also wasn't familiar with the city, although the numbered grid system makes life easy for the visitor -- that is, until you hit the village, at which point the streets get real names, and the layout is more mixed up than a truckload of Bits & Bites.



I first went to Record Explosion -- decent selection on CD, but I'm looking more for vinyl these days. Just for the novelty, I tried the Virgin Megastore. Totally fucking bogus. Typical monstrous-sized store with high prices and nothing remarkable in it. Suprisingly, HMV had some interesting titles, and reasonable prices (total opposite of HMV stores in Canada, lemme tell ya). I picked up the "Sounds like 54" compilation here (it has a great selection of tunes, but mediocre sound quality). I then hit Rose's, which was truly a motherlode of disco -- but *soooo* expensive! They had thousands of things I would've liked to have taken home, but at the prices they were listing, I could only take the things I really knew I wanted. Finally, I hit Vinylmania. I was a bit disappointed -- the place is quite small, and at first I thought they only sold new releases. But a closer look revealed that they had quite a few used discs at very reasonable prices... so here's what I got in total:



Mike Theodore Orchestra: Cosmic Wind/High On Mad Mountain CD



El Coco: Cocomotion '79 EP (replaces my flawed copy)

El Coco: Dancing In Paradise (original USA release, good mastering, interesting gloss effect on sleeve)

Bionic Boogie: Hot Butterfly LP (replaces my worn-to-shreds copy... I've wanted this for a looong time)

Gregg Diamond: This Side Of Midnight/Star Cruiser 12"

D.C. LaRue: Let Them Dance 12"

Claudja Barry: Boogie Woogie Dancing Shoes 12" -- the 7:52 mix that just rules the nation with an iron fist!

Miquel Brown: Symphony Of Love -- original UK 12" -- differnet mix from the LP, and a unique track on the b-side!

Coney Island Chorus: Hooray For Hollywood 12" -- I didn't know that there was a 12 of this Rinder & Lewis one-off release. I think they're the same versions as the 7" single, but I'm thrilled nonetheless

Yeah, I'm liking it. I already had "Come On Down, Boogie People" on a compilation, but the rest of the LP is quite good too.

How much did you pay for this?

Not sure, probably about $12 US. I think it's a slightly different mix than the LP, but I'll need to check. It also has a unique instrumental b-side called "Ocho Rios", which is in mono.

Yep, got that on a compilation too, although I'm not sure if it's the full 10 minutes or not. Those Rick Gianatos mixes sure are weird for the time. Very minimal sounding, and he always strips it down to a dry kick drum at one point in the track.

I'm glad that you found something in NYC worth purchasing. Since I don't have a turn

table, all of my purchases are cds, which is

the reason why I shop at Record Explosion.



Rose's is indeed a "Vinyl Vault" for collectors like you and others on this board.

But they can be pricey especially when you

buy vinyls. I remember when I saw the "Love

Trilogy"(Donna Summer) album for $50.00 I

practically choked! But it was in top-notch

condition. Rose's was also recommended to me

because they custom make tapes & cds for

people like me who don't own a turntable.

The price for three mixes like Barrabas

(WOMAN), Herbie Mann(HIJACK) and C.J & CO

(We got our own thang) on cd starts at $20.00.



I never been to VinylMania but it was recommended to me two years ago for their

custom made disco cds. There is another shop in the Village somewhere not to far

from "Mania" and Christopher St that is supposed to be much better than VinylMania.

So I have to hunt around.



Virgin and HMV is a waste of my time! They are TOOOOO expensive and the sales help don't have a CLUE as to what disco is. They think of disco as house music like La Bouche or Haddaway. Besides, they're collection of classics is a disapointment and down right

horrendous!!!
