I agree totally with you on Röyksopp (which is the only one of the acts you mentioned that I know of). Their album is quite nice; looking good too. Kind of electronic pop. Who knew the Norwegians knew how to do this... =)

not posted on here before , so hi !

a few points to think about ....

there are some fantastic disco trax come out in england all the time , you just need to search for them . i do not buy into "music both sides is in a sad state of affairs" at all , thats so negative and you must be listeneing to the wrong stations , going to the wrong clubs listenting to the wrong dj's with the wrong people . music is as good as ever and whilst there is shit around , there always has been and always will be , just dont buy into it ! turn it off !

i dj , produce , record shop etc and always find stuff . there are thousands like me out there too ! for example ....

uk - check out artists like black science orchestra , harvey [the sprit of paradise garage lives on in this man-believe] , joey negro and full intention . or labels like azuli , galactic disco and z records . even majors like emi have 'credence' records that put out underground disco .

italy - spiller , bini & martini .

germany - mousse t and boris dlugosch of peppermint jam records .

holland - olav basoski's more cut up housier takes on disco .

this is not even starting to go into the obscure stuff , these are the most obvious names . its all out there people .

i really do think you just need to know where to look for inspiration .

danny rampling is also great for garage and vocal house and disco and you can catch him 9pm - midnight every friday evening UK time broadcast live on the internet @ bbc radio 1 so no excuses you cant keep up to date with uk stuff . http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1

shops like http://www.3beat.co.uk and black market stock lots of releases too .

i find nrg music like hazel dean way over . i mean look at her , shes the queen of tack with the music to go with it!!

i dont buy into tina charles either [sorry all , shes tacky and squeeks a lot!] - in the uk 'i love to love' is a v.sad record you hear 60 year old grannies singing to at weddings . not good at all and very uncool ! this is the reason people burnt disco records in parks this kind of cheesy tack . sorry , but its my opinion .

i was also very surprised to see the positioning of loleattas 'love sensation' in your all time 500 as low as it was . amazing really considering the effect it had on music in the uk [albeit indirectly with black box] , and being probably THE most sampled record ever behing james brown s funky drummer loop .

and comments from some uk people that hard house is big , its not its died big time 6 months+ ago as it was re-cycled early 90's rave toons and didnt have shelf-life in it [thank god] . uk garage is big , a lot to do with daytime radio 1 support [which is about to get bigger as radio 1 launch a dedicated black music radio station in 2002 - should be intersting , especially on how 'normal' radio 1's playlist will be affected . so solid crew are as bigger than ever . trance isnt as strong as it was underground , it seems to have got to the stage of huge commercialised anthems a while back but still gets in the charts [see danni minogue in charts at moment] .

its easier in the uk for records to explode as certain radio shows adn dj's have huge following , so even with say 5 acetates out there , with the right plays at the right moment a record can break and be in demand monday after the weekend . its partly due to uk being a smaller country , and partly because the american system of playlists and charts based on playlists prohibits immediate results . to crack america it takes months , no years , of coast to coast touring etc . radios colleges . hopefully the net and hi speed connections is making people more open minded . fingers crossed . this obviously isnt a critisism of you or your country obviously icase anyone picks up the wrong vibes here

still , this music isnt worth mentioning on a site like this as it is garbage and this site isnt . and brittney and oasis etc i wont even go into !

there is sooooo much good music being released , get on it people music is alive and well from where im listening .

rob jay

liverpool . uk .

obviously this is speaking from the heart of the dance music in the uk , not from a commercial and chart perspective as some of the other uk posters have stated to be the case , which is infact incorrect . there is a huge demand for quality music , and although majors and some countires tried to get us to 'fall in line' and buy cd's , we refused here in the uk , and so more and more music is finding releases on vinyl which is great news . i mean vinyl is so cool , even tarantino in jackie brown and more recently madonna have embraced this .

STOP LISTENING TO WHAT YOU ARE TOLD TO AND IN WHAT FORMAT TO BUY IT !!!!!!!

happy xmas all .

So True! Despite the amount of pop crap out there, there's always good music to be heard; it's just that you can not depend on your radio for it.

Season's Greetings,

I don't know whether or not the British have better taste than Americans as a whole when it comes to dance music. Us Americans had some great disco groups and disco songs during the disco era. There were artists such as Cerrone, Alec Costandinos, Giorgio Moroder, Voyage, Sylvetti just to name a few. The Euro sound was less soulful than most American disco in the sevnties. The euro sound was generally more melodic with lots of orchestration and hi-nrg for the most part. During the early eighties I purchased quite a British, and Italian import 12' records because I happened to like that sound better than most American releases. And it pretty much stayed that way thru the eighties especially with the Italian releases (BB Band, Kano, B. Blase, Sandy Marton, Ken Laszlo, DEn Harrow, Fun Fun, etc.). Right now the Brits have the edge on us because we are lagging behind. With trance finally being added to numerous radio playlists (Ian Van Dahl, Darude, etc.) here in the U.S. labels such as Radikal, Ultra and Robbins Entertainment are picking up these imports and releasing them domestically. As far as I'm concerned right now the Europeans are releasing the better music.

Hello everyone! I think the difference between Euro and US-Sound is simple:

European Music is more progressive and every

new trend will be exploited immediately,

like NeoDisco, SpeedGarage, Jungle, Twostep,

TripHop, Filterdisco and nowadays a terrible

80ies Revival like TOK TOK Vs. SOFFY O"Missy

Queen" or TIGA & ZYNTHERIUS"Sunglasses At

Night.I prefer very often the CLASSICAL

US-STYLE of Disco and also HouseMusic,

because it has REAL ROOTS...

I think that early PhillyRecords had influenced lots of records from Europe, like

Silver Convention or Donna Summer, this Sound

had an immense succes and has been electronically revolutionized...then HI-NRG

came along and You Know!, HouseMusic is US-

Sound from Chicago or New York, etc. Europe

is acustically influencing USA and also in the opposite.

And believe, when you hear House- or Techno

since over 12! years in Europe, this also

could be very boring...

in regards to the subject of the brits holding onto there turntables, i think that we in britain, have this mentality of having to hold onto 'old' things not omly for there value but also for posterity. a good example could include collecting football/soccer programmes and stamps, keeping the pound in favour of the euro, imperial measurements instead of metric. i am guily of this collecting mentality too, i am guilty of collecting rare disco/funk/minneapolis/early house vinyl tracks, cufflinks and watches

I was gonna let this thread die...but how about one last parting shot?

In last Sunday's LA Times Calendar, Phil Sutcliffe, a London-based writer and a contributing editor to Q magazine, wrote an article about British rockers attempting to "break America".

I'd like to quote a few paragraphs:

Quote: " Although, since the Beatles, we British music fans have often affected insouciant confidence IN THE SUPERIORITY OF OUR TASTE OVER THE REST OF THE WORLD'S--AND PARTICULARLY AMERICA'S-regardless of crude measures such as sales and chart positions, we experienced a Damascene moment in the late '90's.

It was when the Billboard 200 album chart revealed that the only British entrant younger than 50 was classical-pop ingenue Charlotte Church. "Oh, crikey!" we said."

The rest of the article details the alliances of various Brit managers in forming alliances to break British acts in the U.S. by getting them to tour here and in signing separate record deals with U.S. labels, so they didn't have to share profits with their British labels.

Anyway, I was most amused to see that opening paragraph asserting what I felt to be an "unspoken truth". Nuff said.
