| 'So Much For L.A.' 12" was released in 1980 (though I think the LP vs is better, if less punchy) 'Dont Keep It In The Shadows' was taken from the Tea Dance album which was a 1977 release (I've only got the full length vs on the CD comp). Birdie BTW Have you heard his 1995 single 'The Rounds & the Deep Dark Night' - not a classic but it still has THAT VOICE... |

| Funny I was just going to post about DC Larue! I'll just add it here. Can someone give me, or point me in the right direction of basic info on Larue? Like how successful was his music, how many albums, any reviews, or anything? How much of his stuff is on CD? Back when I was a teen getting into disco, after Moroder, Cerrone, Costandinos Midney and those eurodisco giants I got really obssessed with I started getting interested in Bob Esty's productions just as he was so instrumental in the production of fave works of mine like Once Upon a time and Last Dance. Besides Cher and some Jabara I realized he had produced a song on the TGIF soundtrack DO You Want the Real thing. I found one CD of his--12" Collection on Hot Records so bought it. I played it but kinda forgot about it. I was playing it again recently and realized for me the definite highlight were the three songs done with Larue. Do You Want the Real Thing 12 minute version is spectacular, I love LOVE Let them Dance (too bad the sound quality ont he Hot recording of this track is horrendous but the short mix on the Casablanca 4 CD set is better) and my fave is Hot Jungle Drums and Voodoo Rhythm. GREAT track. I prob prefer the Esty tracks as they sound more Eurodisco to me (i know both Larue and Esty were American but...) As for the other tracks they were all fairly good. He can't really sing but it suits his usual themes which are kinda cynical somewhat critical looks at nightclub etiquette (Meter Man is about getting tired of one nighters, Do You Want the Real Thing about how to pick up at a club, Let them Dance seems to be about peopel who dance, live for the night and party too much, Cathedrals is kinda similar, etc). The linear notes of the CD make huge claims about his success--Cathedrals they say was the first song to top the UK R&B charts by a white male singer, and was called the "blue suede shoes" of disco, etc etc So also out of his albums how many did Esty help produce too? these aren't "definitive",but here goes: "Cathedrals" was very big in the US ,but in discos only-and usually gay clubs.Although it's been mildly argued about at this site,Larue was gay and wrote about his experiences in clubs,bathhouses,etc.."Cathedrals" is still played today and it stands up pretty good. His next LP was even bigger "The Tea Dance"(refers to afternoon gay clubbing)having multi cut listings like "Don't keep it in Shadows"."Indiscreet""O-baba"and more.My favorite DC,though is the 12 mix of "Let Them Dance" however-this is where all his quirks came together. He cannot sing,no argument here, but that high pleading voice with the right backing was strangely appealing.Like most of Amanda Lear's stuff-I have to be in the exact mood and environment-and then it's like a great "high".(trivia:that's Patti Brooks singing back up on "Let Them Dance")I have only recently rediscovered "Jungle Drums" and especially "Do you want the real thing" from listening to the Trocedero tribute CD's,but again in the right mix, they sound great. As for CD's unfortunately the Hott comp is all I've got-and I almost threw it out my car window when I heard the mastering job on this-what crack were they smoking?I also have the Casablanca box too,but no one was paying attention and put short/edited versions-inexcusable. I don't know how much more Esty produced though-the later Casablanca stuff?Anyways,I hope this helped a little! Thom P.S.-Eric-do a seller search on ebay for Shakh.Click on "other items" and there are three Casablanca CD's that are not available anywhere. These are recorded from the LP's but he does an excellent job as I have bought 4 CD's from him in the past.Just an FYI Last edited by thommy2458; July 8th, 2006 at 11:34 PM. |

DEEP DARK DELICIOUS NIGHT was the first "only heard within a club" song I vividly recall hearing .... in the clubs .... and then having to chase down and own .... Bohannon soon after .... but I think this was first .... It was so unlike anything else to me and while I liked CATHEDRALS too ... it was this DELICIOUS NIGHT that suckered me .... that guitar gallup , furious strings ..........those intriguingly upbeat but also shady , sexually ambiguous lyrics presented by that " pleading " voice as you describe it .... hooked me throughout the song until the final climatic finish 8-) I then eagerly bought the Tea Dance LP as a true LaRue fan ... right away when released with no previewing ... and thought it had its moments .... recall playing O- BA-BA in high rotation ..... and then that was it for me .... *****

| "Deep, Dark Delicious Night" is a track on the "Cath-e-drals" LP (that's the way it's printed). I first became aware of this track in a Disconet remix titled "Making The Rounds/Deep Dark Delicious Night" released sometime in 1983, I think. "Hope is eternal so you keep on making the rounds"--this phrase haunted me one night on the Trocadero Transfer dance floor. I asked Ralph Brown, the record buyer at Aloha, the next day what this was....and he told me. I said it seemed "profound" in my altered state; he said '"Profound, huh?", & rolled his eyes...... then he went upstairs and brought down the Disconet version and I BOUGHT IT!!! FULL PRICE!!!:lol::lol: ( around $25 bucks back then I think; rather pricy for a mere "shop girl" like me!!!):razz::razz: I must pull this one out and compare to the original version--which got exactly 1 mention on the Billboard charts.

BTW, my notes show I paid between $20 to $25 for the Disconet sets. So, it depended on who was ringing up our sales and how generous they felt about "Employee Discounts"! Remember the owner's controlled the inventory of Disconets and Hot Tracks pretty well, keeping them in the upstairs office instead of down on the main floor?? Can you imagine if they treated all of their store's inventory that carefully? Aloha Records might still be in business! Wouldn't that be something??? :o |

| Hot Jungle Drums And Voodoo Rhythm is a great song that I wish would be available on CD; obviously I would want the 9:46 version. I was a bit disappointed by the aforementioned four-disc set released 10 years ago; Casablanca's library was much more vast than the songs provided, and leaving out Kiss and Santa Esmeralda was unacceptable. You can ditto the edits on the Love And Kisses tracks as well.

| Amazing that I should stumble on this thread. I was browsing in a record shop here in Manchester on Saturday just gone and saw a 12" single that had Hot Jung Drums on one side and a track by another artist on the other. There was a write-up on the sleeve raving about its energy. I have no idea where the 12" comes from other than it indicated that it was from the States. toto |
