Default RETURN TO CASABLANCA : Special Promotional Package

You vinyl lovers amongst us .....
How many of you own the RETURN TO CASABLANCA 2-record in-store promo package??
4 sides of cuts from various artists with current Casablanca LP releases....one side rock ..... three sides disco.
I love its great cover artwork with the close-up of Neil Bogart in the bar in Casablanca .... the reality of it being a movie being revealed in the distance in the reflection of the mirror behind him : ... reflecting the excitement at Casablanca Records in those days... as it ventured into being both a recording and film producing company.

Very cool packaging. You've got to give Casablanca credit for their marketing skills. This was a very clever promo to put into the hands of record store employees ....

There's a DJ talking over each "mix" introducing the cuts ...... anyone know who it is ?
Bet he was pissed .... he got no credit on the jacket !!:P

In listening through the intros ..... the DJ introduces himself ..... it's NYC's Frankie Crocker .

BTW ..... on one introduction he screws up the artist's name .... anyone else notice this ??
Hint: Sandra Dee just revealed liking this particular artist a lot .

Since the interest is so massive here :P ... I'll keep going  ........ what the hell !!! :D

This is a four sided package for in-store record play.

Poor Casablanca tried to score in the rock market .... hitting paydirt with KISS ....and dispite a whole stable of rock acts , only Kiss .... who are represented here with ROCKET RIDE

Other rock bands on here : Angel, Trigger, Stallion and The Godz

Side four is all Alec Constandinos : cuts from ROMEO & JULIET , SUMARIA , SPHINX , LOVE AND KISSES LPs

The other two sides are hodge podge . Parlet, Santa Esmeralda, Meco .....etc.

I have to think this was a muck up though :
Donna Summer is on here twice ...two different sides .... but with the same song : RUMOUR HAS IT
Odd they would put the same track on here twice ... with a two-record set of hers to pull from. It isn't as though they thought RUMOUR was the best cut to be pushing so heavily (x2) .... I 'm not sure it was even released as a single ....?......

Funny you mention this remicks, I used to have a copy of this. I went to look for it, and can't find it now...but it was a neat representation of Casablanca records, and the all too short time they were active in the music world.

What are the track lengths? Are they the single edits, or are they over 5 minutes each? Do the mixes sound unique? And are they beat matched blended, or just fade in and out?

DF ..... Nothing is played for more than five minutes ... typically around three . The edits are total fade outs or total train wrecks ..... nothing fancy ..nothing remixed ....each tune played from the top until arbitrary fade outs ....
Frankie Crocker is terrible. I counted three errors and I wasn't even really trying ... no wonder he got no name mention on the jacket .... :P

While I think this is an interesting collectable .... I think the interest is in the album jacket and the novelty .... it's a wonderful promo concept .... but not well executed and it contains nothing that's original musically to play it specifically for ...unless you'd be a Frankie Crocker fan for some reason ....

Default those are called "label samplers"

and many major labels have done them, but Elecktra Records really did an interesting idea. They had their current artists doing songs from the label's back catalog. Teddy Pendergrass did Bread's "Make it with You", Anita Baker did Carly Simon's "You Belong to Me", the Cure did the Door's "Hello, I Love You", and so on. I thought it was a brilliant idea, more labels should have tried it. I guess the Casablanca artists could have covered each other's songs.....how about the Village People doing "Last Dance", Donna Summer doing "Thank God it's Friday", Parliament doing "Flashdance, What a Feeling".
