For some reason the lame song D-D-D-D-D-D-D DANGEROUS first comes to mind whenever I think of her ..... I think it was the final straw in my attempt to like her ....

OK Remicks, that is one I CAN agree with. I remember my father saying that she couldn't sing and she was successful because of her dad. I couldn't hear it then but I hear it now. Her vocals...just plain too weak. I remember a Jet magazine cover asking who was the Queen of Soul between Natalie, Diana and Aretha. Why ask?

BTW, I never said I hated Donna Summer. I just think that she and most of her songs were overrated.

I have a varied point of view on Miss Natalie Cole. I think she sounds great on "This will be an everlasting love", "Our love", "I'm catching hell", "Peaceful Living", and "Inseparable". I just discovered a recent track which is my favorite called "Heaven is with you".
All of the songs I mentioned are ballads from the 1970's. I did think she sounded a bit out of place in the 80's especially with Dangerous from 1985. In the 1990's, she started doing things that were adult contempory and more along the lines of what her father sung. Recutting and putting your vocals on a song is sort of tacky.
About the uptempo stuff, "Sophisticated lady" isn't one of my favorite tracks. It's playable but sounds like a funk song done by a non-funk artist. "Joey" which I believe was a single never did much for me.

I don't mind Natalie Cole. The last couple of cds that I bought of hers are quite listenable. Check out her 'Ask A Woman Who Knows' cd for some smooth easy listening.

My favourite of hers by far was her incredibly danceable version of Springsteen's Pink Cadillac. This one stayed on my Saturday night playlist for a couple of years....definitely one of the biggest dance tracks of the '80s. The follow-up Wild Women Do was so funkin' wild, soulful and fun..."come on get wild wit me bayy-by...everybody get it on...everybody get wild!" And the crowd did!

Now if I were to play this game and mention an artist that I dislike, "the artist formerly known as Prince, then was some ancient symbol then once again called himself Prince" comes to mind.

Ditto! Can't stand Prince nor his symbol.

Only a couple of decent songs in his catalog. There's too much esoteric romps, squeals, and devles into rock music for me.

I once saw this CD about 10 years ago of his which was definitely limited edtion and all wrapped in gold.

I forgot about OUR LOVE ... if that popped up on a random CD ... I'd probably play it thru ....

:o .... every Saturday night for two years !! This song ?? Well I think it says less about that novelty song 's greatness ... and more about the puny choices of the period ....

Another song of Miss Cole's assured to make me ill from the displeasure of hearing was MISS YOU LIKE CRA-ZY -------------- :P

Any horrid Euro-stringy efforts. I know all the queens on here love Constandinos etc. but that stuff is just white trash to me. Those kind of cheesy commercial records are the drift into white pop and have no funk or soul imho.

Sadly quite a few people have mention Barry White who I love. I'm not a fan of granny smoochy soul ballads but his productions go much deeper than that.

Anyone who thinks he's overrated should listen to Love Unlimted Orchestra "Welcome Aboard" "Strange Funky Games & Things" (is that what it's called) and the Jay Dee album he produced. Tbh, he's a genuis.

OK these are not disco releated but I'll have to mention:
Lou Reed
Leonard Cohen
Bob Dylan

I have the general impression that one is not allowed to say bad things about their music. It seems that they are beyond critizizm for some odd reason. I don't get it. Why don't they just write books instead? :-?

Come on thats Blastphemy! :(

Prince is a muscial genious
altough I detest quite few of his songs

he is a true pioneer

and one of the first pre-informationalists artist in a society clouded by post-modernism

He was one of the FIrst to merge and entertwin different segments of popular culture, and was undoubltey copied by a few
I certain MJ comes to mind.

But Prince did it first
he experimented
he openend up people's eyes

Nothing special .... like Barbra Streisand !!! :o Now that's funny !!!

For those who's time on the planet post dates the disco era ... keep in mind that you are hearing all of Donna's achievements crammed together in one compressed listening . (Sort of the fast food .... here you are in one bag to go .... version ) I would imagine getting them all as one solid dosage would have to be far less exciting. Bare in mind then , that in reality ..... that music was coming out over the course of many years. Everytime a new Donna Summer was released it was anticipated with an excitement not equaled toward any other . And she always delivered.

DJ's greatly looked forward to those special nights where the highlight of the evening would be introducing their floor to the latest Donna Summer ..... always one of the most exciting of moments of the disco scene ....

Beyond any other disco act ..... Donna Summer always stayed on top . She stayed fresh and relevant all the way throughout disco's run. .....

Disco will always harbor the highest regard for Donna Summer .....

Sutnop- Michael Jackson has his place in disco/pop/soul but Prince issued much that was subpar. Even the decent song got boring because his voice is so distinct but his style and lyrics are out there. "Kiss" and "I want to be your lover" were just alright.

Michael, regardless of what some say, you could definitely releate to. His approach was softer and made more musical sense.

IMHO Giorgio Moroder MADE Donna Summer the success that she was. No offense to Donna Summer, but put just about any other female vocalist in Mr. Moroder's studio, and great music WILL happen.

You're right ... Donna Summer must revere the day she first hooked up with Giorgio. It was a musical match made in disco heaven. Giorgio did work quite well with several other females .... ( well ...except that one "Chris" one .... whatever happened to her ?? ) But interestingly , none became long-time pairings as with Donna ....including Roberta Kelly ,whom after a couple of projects , he seemed to give up on .... There was definitely something about Donna that drew him back to her again and again .....
