| ***** James Brown released lots of 45's in his career. Let's start with the eighteen he released in the 1950's under the Federal label. Then in 1960 he went to KING where he was ultra productive until switching labels in 1971. I've mentioned elsewhere that in 1969 alone he released 15 singles .....( and four of those were about popcorn :o !!! ) Then from 1971 to 1980 he urged people to get up offa that thing with an additional "X" number of 7" releases on Polydor . That's a good place to stop (although a good secondary question is: .... What disco label did James Brown next release three more singles on .. .... one in 1980 and another in 1981 ?? :-? OK we'll add those three into the total too. But nothing beyond that .... not the Scotti Bros. 80's stuff ..... That makes 18 on FEDERAL thru the fifties ----------------15 on KING in 1969 alone -----------------3 on ??? ... in ' 80-'81 That's 36 singles so far .......... and that's just barely scratchin' the surface :) ...... 36 + ??? for a grand total of ..... ???? 45 releases by James Brown ?? ?? ***** Shenkin's single added which required : |

| I think it's in the neighborhood to 180-190 but not as high as 200. A lucky guess 183. |

| ***** Good guessin' !! James Brown's first release was "PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE" in 1956. It went to #6 R&B. Then he went nuts and just kept releasing single after single , especially in the sixties and the first half of the seventies, right up until (and beyond ) 1981 with his Shenkin release of "FUNKY MEN " / "MASHED POTATOES" ----- on TK RECORDS ...... ........resulting in a grand total of : ---- ** 178 ** funkin' 45's !!!! ---- to be exact (? *).......... ________________ Seven of those 178 singles were "unissued" and another three were "withdrawn" ***** ( unless Shenkin has a different count :D :P ) |

all of these were commercially released and the total would have been higher if all the withdrawn or singles that were not issued were counted. Federal x 18 King (1960-1966) x 58 King (1967-1971) x 39 Smash (1964-1967) x 10 People/Polydor (1971-1980) x 46 EP's on the mentioned labels not counted nor included so that makes a grand total of RELEASED singles on 45rpm of 171 before 1981. I believe that his work during the disco era was released mainly on 12" single or album, 7" singles are scarce. His releases during the disco era were troublesome as his relationship with Polydor came to an end. A lot of smaller independent labels like TK and Augusta Sound released some of his work. Although he had considerable success with disco and called himself 'the original disco man' his releases never were as essential as in his glory days of the sixties. In my opinion his last really great release in the early eighties was "Unity" with Afrika Bambaata on Tommy Boy. tastyvinyl[/b] |

| nice thread started here... imagine as one of his biggest fans... via singles. I think I only picked up around 20 before gettin' double sided hits which would be around another 10-15. |

If you have the above record, could you please let me know who is listed as producer? Right around that time, I can't remember when, I did a record at T.K. with James Brown. I used a pseudonym (A... P....), for I was not supposed to be doing that record. I just can't remember the name of it. I wonder if that was it. The record I made had a sound similar to "Here Comes That Sound, Again, and Again ....) the echo/delay. I believe it was a Ray Caviano record RFC. It'll be nice to know, so that I can add it to my collection. I lost most of my records back when Hurricane Andrew hit Miami. I have replaced many of them, but I am missing some obscure ones, as well as some on the foreign labels (Europe, Canada, Africa, South America, etc.), and will like to eventually replace them all. Thanks. |

| Ray, I just pulled this 12" out and it only has minimal credits showing producer as James Brown and executive producer as Henry Stone. The album from which it is taken, Soul Syndrome, may yield more credits, but I don't have that one to check.
