Dalida biopic aired Shown on French Tv5 on New Year's eve, "Dalida" came across as a handsomely mounted production despite being a tv movie and in spite of the presence of Christopher Lambert who for some reason continues to be a somebody in France. The look of the biopic was something a drag queen's wet drams must be like, all delirious colours, shiny surfaces, ornate Egyptian/60's pop art kitsch props in every frame and gilded staircases to make dramatic poses on. There were Pierre&Gillesque snowfalls for the Christmas scenes, huge hairdos and all the cliches from every diva-in-existential-distress film ever made. Only here it was all done very well, even the tragic final suicide sequence did not too shove too much campy pathos in your face. The disco years were especially nicely evoked, with glittering recreations of "J'Attendrai" and "Monday Tuesday", complete with golden confetti and flashing dancing shoes. I decided to write down the name of the familiar looking lead actress afterwards but found out I had recorded a sports event from another channel. As she's a legend in France there must be a dvd on it's way, look out for it. |
