Camille Paglia comments Madonna's new CD

Last summer, Madonna described her forthcoming CD as “future disco” — which raised the hopes of all die-hard disco fans that “Confessions on a Dance Floor” would be a masterpiece, a return to roots but also a visionary breakthrough.

That’s not what we got — though you’d never know it from the gushing reviews, which applauded the CD for achieving Madonna’s purported aim of making people dance. My blood boiled at this insulting reduction of dance music to gymnastics — mere recreational aerobics. I for one do not dance to dance music; disco for me is a lofty metaphysical mode that induces contemplation.

When my partner, Alison Maddex (a true blue Madonna fan), bought the CD a few days after its release on Nov. 15, I was shocked at how the reviews had failed to note its tinny shrillness, sonic clichés, and intermittently clumsy or muddy layering — a startling lapse in Madonna’s usually impeccable quality control.

Ah, truer words ne'er spoken. "Hung Up" only reminded me how truly AWESOME ABBA were when they did "disco". All the hook and genius in that song comes from 1979. All the pandering and cheese is fresh 2005.

Tonight I heard a song on the radio that used the backing track of Wings' "Silly Love Songs" to a dancey tune called "Don't Hold Back The Rain" (title?) by ? Similar in style to Madonna's "Hung Up". It's amazing how musicianship, let alone craftsmanship, doesn't even exist anymore.

And thanks to the ABBA-sample, "Hung up" is bearable, contrary to the rest of the album which is absolute and utter bollocks.

And I'm not saying this coz' I'm not a Madonna fan but IMHO it is the plain truth. If you want to hear that sort of sampling done in a creative way, buy the Bob Sinclar albums.

I haven't heard Madonna's new one, I probably won't and most likely won't buy it either.

About Camille: The weekly column she wrote for salon.com was the only thing that attracted me to that site. Eventually even Camille realized her writing and intellectual skills couldn't save that site of hate-filled left-wing hyperbole and propaganda so she quit.

I do find her observations and opinions on many aspects of modern life, pop culture and politics to be stimulating and enjoyable.

I would pay BIG BUCKS to see her and Ann Coulter face off on stage. And when the debate was over munch a little carpet too. :lol:

Discoman, don't bother. I've honestly tried and there isn't 1 song on that album that I really like or even find a little bit interesting.

Overhyped and strictly marketing, that's it!

That's a shame. My experience has been the louder the hype and marketing the poorer the product.

Madonna's 46 on her way to 47 - she's yesterday's news and not relevant to the young people of today. She IS old enough to be their mother afterall.
