Klaus Nomi documentary I recently saw a doc on this guy, called "The Nomi song" just like one of his almost-hits in early Eighties' NYC. In fact I knew almost nothing about the guy, but given that this is a very interesting period in music for me (I dug new wave and "no wave" as much as disco) I was looking forward to see this pic.
The guy was basically an opera-trained German singer who went to NY to try to "make it" and ended creating this androgynous space persona which made for great entertainment live. In fact, according to testimonies and period footage the look was perhaps more interesting that the music itself. Some years later Nomi returned to Europe, where he got to record two LPs before being one of the first performers which died of an AIDS-related disease.
There are coverage about that period as well (Man Parrish is one of the interviewees) but throughout the pic it's stated that the most interesting period on Nomi's music were the NYC years, sadly not reflected on record.
The movie is very well constructed, with plenty of footage and sounds of NY circa 1978-81 (including a great David Bowie performance in which Klaus did backup vocals). I recommend it to anyone interesting in the period. It's a German production from 2004, directed by Andrew Horn. |
